I’m positive Emma Atkins is going to deliver an overwhelmingly heartbreaking, phenomenal performance in the upcoming SA awareness s/l … I just wish it was handled with more care and respect that a s/l like this deserves.
I don’t think it should have been attached to a current storyline that has a lot of shock and trauma already associated with it, to IMO, dilute the the fallout the character of Charity would/should receive and potentially invalidating/minimizing the feelings of the characters her actions during babygate have negatively impacted/harmed. IF this is being used as a way to redeem her character as some have suggested … that just feels wrong to me. 🤷🏽♀️
Emma Atkins performance in this upcoming storyline is the least of my concerns (although no doubt she will be amazing.) I hate these type of storylines already but I just feel a SA storyline for Charity is just a bad idea full stop. Firstly, Charity was sexually abused and exploited as a teenager so I don’t get why the writers are planning to add more trauma to a person who is still living and dealing with the trauma she already had inflicted on her. It just seems cruel. Secondly, I don’t see a need for this type of storyline so soon after the Ray/Celia human trafficking storyline and not too long after it was revealed what Ruby Milligan’s father did to her. Finally, and I could be wrong about this, having Charity be assaulted by another woman just seems (to me anyway) to play into the stereotype that all queer people sexual predators and rapists. Emmerdale tried this before with Owen drugging Robert in attempt to rape him. I feel this upcoming storyline is tasteless and offensive.
I hope my post doesn’t upset anyone (either by my opinion or the subject matter). That was not my intent. I just thought I give my two cents.
