I just finished watching Derry Girls...
For those who do not know, it’s a British sitcom about Irish teenagers from Derry, Norther Ireland during the Troubles (look it up).
At first, it was a just on a whim; I was just bored and had nothing better to do. As I binged thru episode after episode, I eventually finished a season and started he next one without me realizing it. I was so engrossed at the story of the girls. It was not your run-of-the-mill teenage sitcom. It’s unlike the usual teen romcom. Yes, the girls talked about love and relationships but the story never did revolve around it. The only romance-esque plot of the show had only less than 5 minutes of screentime. It was about life. It was mundane - to say the least but it was interesting enough for people to relate to even if they haven’t been to Ireland or even if I as a viewer was culturally different. It showed the problems teenagers go through, be it at school or at home or the community itself. It showed how teens just wanted to enjoy being teens and explore the things that come their way while navigating thru a very troubled country. It was not a love story but I fell in love with the girls. From the weird Orla, to the frantic Clare, the promiscuous Michelle, the pressured Erin and to the actually-a-British-boy-but-still-a-Derry-girl James.
The thing that probably engulfed me was that the story was not generic as I’ve said. It was a mish-mash of events. The episodes were like random events told about a person’s life and then curated just for the show. It talked about politics without being political, it talked about love without being romantic, it talked about teenage woes without being edgy or preachy. It was a simple story about a group of friends.
This is not a review. I was just trying to vocalize and justify what had been weighing down on me ever since I finished the series (it was only 3 seasons). I wanted more but at the same time I felt satisfied with how they ended it. I questioned myself why I had been so engrossed with the story that I felt heavy when it ended. Do i relate with the story? I didn’t think so. But I did grow up (elementary to highschool) in a province in a time when tribal wars were still a thing. There was a time when I was in a friend group where I was the only boy (much like James). I did consider myself weird, frantic and pressured. But more so than those, I did also share a kiss with the person I liked but it ended up getting nowhere. Maybe those are the reasons I like it so much. I don’t know. I’m almost done with this ramble but I still can’t get my head around why I liked this series this much.
