The Orville episode "Majority Rule" came out in 2017, and it honestly only gets more terrifyingly relevant with time.
This planet is a true absolute democracy -- everything is determined by popular vote.
Even individual people get upvotes and downvotes, and they're permanent.
You can get a downvote for any reason, even if it was something entirely unintentional.
If you get enough downvotes, you're arrested and possibly even lobotomized. In the end, the crew has to save their crew member from the planet's justice system by manipulating public opinion of him. They do this by flooding the planet's public feed with artificially generated images. (Again, this episode came out in 2017.)
There's even a followup episode confirming that life on this planet has only gotten worse in the following years.
Like... The Orville really wasn't fucking around, huh.
