Thursday (7/21/16)
After class, my plan was going to be to go to Yagitei=>Seimei Shrine=>Kyoto International Manga Museum, but I wasn’t feeling too good, especially since I had gotten heat stroke the day before.
Instead, I went with 2 other dorm friends and visited the shrine and temple near our dorm.
1)赤山禅院 Sekizan Zenin Our first stop! It was a long and complicated walk, but we managed to get there!! I have a lot of photos of the inside, but I can only fit so much in one post, I just picked a few that I liked. Sekizan Zenin included both a temple and a shrine. In fact, it included multiple!! Each for a different God and for different reasons to pray. (Money, Evil begone...etc.) This is where I got my first goshuin stamp! We had two options to choose from. A shrine’s goshuin (神社の御朱印) or a temple’s (お寺の御朱印). A friend went before me and had gotten the shrine’s so I got the temple’s. I honestly wanted both, but I didn’t have enough change and was a little shy to have the lady find change for me... Prepare some mosquito bite ointments!! This place extends into the woods so there were a lot of mosquitos!! I learned the hard way QQ
On our way to our second stop, we traversed through more small roads within the residential area. Again, I have a lot of photos from this walk so I just picked my favorites. It felt like we were in the countryside since there was fields and farm land here and there. One of my friends kept saying that it felt like we were in a Ghibli movie!! Right before getting to our second stop, we passed by a recreational center(?) that also had iced coffee, so we went in for some of that. I want to bring this up because the coffee there is really bad, DON’T DO IT. DON’T GO IN.
2)曼殊院 Manshuin
Our second stop! Unfortunately for us, we got there around 4:30 and had almost missed the last admission time, but that also meant we didn’t have a long time to really look at everything. (We rushed towards the end). Before going into the actual temple, at the door where we purchased our admission ticket, we left our goshuins there for them to stamp! I mustered up the courage to ask for both stamps, because at that point, I didn’t even have exact change for one LOL!! The lady was happy enough to accept my larger bill. After leaving our goshuins with the lady at the front, they gave us slips so we could remember to come pick up our goshuin booklets when leaving. Now into the temple. You have to take off your shoes!! Also, photos were prohibited in almost every part of this temple except the garden, which didn’t have much to look at. We were really bummed about this, but we kept to the rules of course. There were so many artifacts inside the temple!! A few scrolls handwritten by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Oda Nobunaga... We were lucky enough to have a monk, who was passing by (he was bringing rice offerings to different rooms), tell us some of the history and what was what!! His Japanese was a little hard for me to follow because it was historical AND he was sort of mumbling his words, but we managed to figure out most of the history.
I recommend going to Manshuin! They have a lot of interesting rooms and artifacts there! Some are replicas but the scrolls were the real deal!!
Wednesday (7/20/16)
First day of class! I found out I got sorted to a lower class??? So I requested a change of class, only to be interviewed and slightly ridiculed/underestimated by one of the staff members at the Language Center. (I’m a little bitter so I’ll probably make a separate blog post about this.)
Afterward that whole conundrum, a few dorm friends and I headed to Kyoto Station again! I, again, needed to buy slippers from Yodobashi... Before that though, we went for a light snack at the ramen lane in Kyoto Station’s 10th floor! One of my friends wanted to check out the skywalk and take pictures too. I’m usually one who is VERY afraid of heights, but because I’ve been on the skywalk before, AND there was less people there that day, I felt safe.
We headed towards Shijo Kawaramachi afterwards and shopped a little bit! That’s when I finally got a Goshuin!!! I’ve had my eyes on one of these since I started planning for my trip to Kyoto! These little booklets are so cute, and they make GREAT souvenirs! They’re basically like a stamp booklet where you would need to visit different Shrines or Temples around Japan to get the stamp. The stamps are USUALLY 300Yen but, I’ve heard some shrines/temples charge more. You can buy Goshuins at bookstores OR, if you have a favorite shrine/temple, or like a design from one of the shrines/temples, you can also get one there! They don’t have a lot to choose from at the shrines/temples unfortunately, so make sure you do your research before choosing!! I had originally wanted the Seimei Shrine goshuin, but it didn’t work with my plans... So I had to buy one earlier, which is fine! There’s a lot of cute designs!
On the way back to the dorms, by bus, we passed by an area that reminded me of Uchouten Kazoku! I’m sure they used the area around here as reference since Uchouten Kazoku was basically set in Kyoto LOL!!
Tuesday (7/19/16)
I’m already a few days late on journal entries, but that’s fine!! Tuesday, I didn’t really do much except walk around the school and my dorm to familiarize myself with the surroundings.
At night though, there was a welcome party held for us Summer Program students at our dorm! The Language Center invited a few Japanese Uni Students from Doshisha Uni. and we had a great time getting to know each other, practicing out Japanese!! They brought a kakigoori machine + syrup so we all took turns cranking our dessert. They also brought fireworks so we all went up to the roof and had a great time playing with them!! (I mostly was taking photos though cause I didn’t have slippers on and was afraid of burning my feet...
Monday (7/18/16)
Landed and moved into my dorm!! I’m on the fourth floor and I banged my toe while trying to bring my luggage to my room. Unfortunately for me, the rest of the day became so hard to walk.
After getting settled in, I accompanied another dorm mate to Kyoto station. It took such a while to get there from my dorm… :( Had dinner there but also bought a few pretty important items. IC card. So my travels are easier Plug adapter for my laptop. Because I’m an idiot.
I'm back!!
I’ll be starting up my journal blog again soon! On 7/18, I’ll be headed towards Kyoto and moving into a dorm where I’ll be commuting to and from language classes at the Kyoto Institute of Culture and Language! I’ll also be going to Osaka and Tokyo sometime the rest of July and August. I’ve already planned my trip so all I need to do is just go and have fun!!
I’ll take as much pics as I can and I’ll try to blog as much as I can too!!

(1/15/16~1/18/16) Friday-Monday I went up to Oakland to visit my best friend who goes to university there. She took me around and we literally spent all our money just eating or drinking. I wish we took more pictures though!! But it was sooooooo fun and I really missed talking/seeing her again!!! I landed Friday night so we grabbed in n out and headed to her apartment. I put my stuff down and after we had our food, we went to a nearby bar!! We had our first drinks together and exchanged belated birthday presents!!!! She was very happy and that made me JUST as happy!! Saturday, we did a little window shopping and tea drinking. She showed me around Oakland and we had a late lunch. Which meant dinner was even later. She took me to a REALLY BIZZARO and sketchy Korean restaurant. Sunday, we went to SF after spending the daytime lying around in bed or goofing off at home. We were on a hunt for calamari but we didn't find any... I told her that we didn't need to find any fancy stuff and that I was okay with street vendors. Heck, I would FIGHT A SEAGULL for one. After dinner, we waited for the jazz bar we planned on going to to prepare their live show at 9, so we walked to Union Square where Safeway was hosting their open ice rink. It was also raining so the ice rink was DANGER ZONE. My friend went to go skate regardless though. At around 9:30, we headed to the Jazz bar, ordered two drinks, The Krampus and Snow Bound, got some seats upstairs, above the stage and chatted the night away. Lastly, today, Monday, was the day for me to leave. My flight was at 3ish so we had lunch at the Chinatown in Oakland with one other friend that I didn't expect to meet during my visit. But all fun must come to an end at some point. I got on the plane and went back to LA. My mom was too busy to pick me up so I had to take the Flyaway shuttle to union and transfer home. Lots of firsts and lots of adventures!! Next time, it's her turn to come visit me in Taiwan!!
(1/13/16) Wednesday Landed in LA!! Back for winter break and immediately have plans waiting for me as soon as I arrive.
(1/8/16) Friday I finally got to go to the Junji Ito exhibit!!! Went with a fellow foreign classmate from uni. Before going into the exhibit itself, we had to DL a crazy large app that let us experience the exhibit IN A WHOLE NEW WAY!! Once we fled the app, we put our phones into this binocular looking headset and when we aim our phones on certain large manga panels, they start to move and play sound effects too! My favorite app effect is the one with the bishounen story. Which I have never read but I will soon!! It was a lot of fun! I didn't expect to see Uzumaki but they had a display of a body after going through swirls. And Tomie of course.
A few highlights all happening on different days. I actually lost a lot of photos on my phone (good thing I installed Shoebox and backed up my photos tbh) so I have a pretty empty album rn. Wanted to go to the Junji Ito exhibit in Taiwan but the line was too long and I was alone that day so I rescheduled with a classmate to go on Friday. I got some merch first though! Christmas was coming up at the time so my German teacher brought cookies and movie to watch before finals (which is this week). Celebrated my 21st birthday on Christmas cause I'm Jesus! Had a mini buffet at home set up with help from my mom. And Pizza Hut. And Costco. And KFC. And just recently, (1/1/16) HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! A friend I haven't seen in a loooong time came to visit Taiwan, but because of upcoming finals, I could only go out with her for a couple hours. We talked a lot and I took her to the world's first cat cafe! Hopefully more photos soon after Junji Ito exhibit! And I'm also going back to LA soon!
So here’s a rather random assortment of photos…
Just a fast and quick update of the past few days. I’ll try to document the past few days before I go back to Taiwan.
Thursday 8/13/15 Went to an old childhood friend’s house! Took photos of her dog, Olive. Also we busted out some new dog beds (or are they cat beds now?) for my cat!! He’s comfy.
Friday 8/14/15 Hung with a friend again and I just went to her house after she got off from work. Watched Code Geass since I’ve never seen it before and I know people freaked about from way back. (Not enjoying it tbh). She also handed me Eijun and Chris from a recent online purchase since she knew I liked them together >___< STOP GIVING ME THINGS!!!
Saturday 8/15/15 My friend was going to watch a movie with me but we ended up going today (Sunday) since she was busy. I stayed home and caught up on homework as much as possible. Also finished watching Young & Hungry!!!!!!! Jesse McCartney is SUPER CUTE! The entire show was just really entertaining and the characters were really fun too! I definitely enjoyed it more than Undateable.
Sunday 8/16/15 Today!! Went to watch Straight Outta Compton with my friend and we LOVED the movie!!!!!!!!!!!! Afterwards, went to grab this Donald backpack from Vans I’ve been wanting and she also gave me a scarf she found me when she went to Vegas a few weeks ago!! >_____< I wish the weekends didn’t end so soon!! We still have a few more chances to hang but I’m sad I’m almost leaving soon…!!!
This has been in my drafts and I'm going back to LA soon LMAOOOO
I can't stop
Haven’t been posting much since I just got all caught up feeling the moment back in LA!!
Here’s a post of random food collection I’ve had so far.
I never really appreciated LA until after I’ve moved away…!! I’m really gonna miss my home when I go back to Taiwan but I think that’s going to make me enjoy my stay even more from now on!
All my friends are so great I love everyone so much!
Saturday (6/27/15)
Saturday, I took my last final and met up with my friend one last time before I leave to go back to LA in a few days.
We went to Animate to see wth is up with my books that I ordered MONTHS ago. Turns out they still haven’t come in so I asked for a refund.
While there, I was grabbing a few gifts for people in going to see at AX and also hunted out the Animedia magazine with Ensemble Stars clear file in it!
Also got Decemeber Tsuki Uta mascot (matching strap with my friend who got May!) and I also got the duet album!
Found another Chris in the bargain section too.
Saturday (7/11/15) Same friend, from basically every other post, took me out again! This time we went pretty far to a Natsu Matsuri that was being hosted. Other than eating Japanese street food, there was also a lot of cute community performances. After we tried to go to more places but everything was closed by the time we drove out. In the end, we just went back to her house with In n Out and Half&Half and shouted about how bad Aldnoah is. ...but I still got a free poster from her and Slaine is hecka cutieeeee Actually, I just got home! I think I may be sick?? I sort of felt light headed at the Matsuri today and it just stuck with me the entire rest of the day...(still feel light headed now). Can't go out with her again tomorrow, but hopefully resting tomorrow will get me better???? I need to drink more liquids.
