PSA today I encountered a phishing scam posing as an ID verification requirement.

The account name was just a bunch of numbers, though the profile listed the name of the blog as "Tumblr Staff." The account was only following one account (the real Tumblr Staff) and only had one post. In classic phishing fashion it told me my account was partially suspended (for vague and confusing reasons) and that I needed to click a link and provide my ID within 48 hours. And the post was extremely long. That's every move in the phishing playbook at once.

I didn't take a screenshot of the notification itself but it used 🛡️emojis and words like "security alert" so it looked urgent. It tagged me in a comment that was under the post pictured in the screenshot above.

I did not click the link and I already reported the post and the account but KEEP YA HEADS ON A SWIVEL EVERYONE 🗣️ shit like this is INEVITABLE with ID verification laws. I'm sure there will be more like it...

If you're ever not sure if something is a phishing scam, try to navigate to the site they want you to click a link to for yourself (using sites you know are real - don't just type the link address but ie start from Tumblr's help page). You should be able to find official pages this way. If you can't, it's likely a scam.

this is a fantastic piece of writing. I think of this when I write my image descriptions - if I am posting artwork, can I create the emotional beats of the art based on how I choose my phrasing, rather than having a dead literal description? would someone who couldn't see the art at all still get something meaningful out of my writing?
