Yamaha Bass Trumpet?
Yes, a Yamaha bass trumpet does exist and we have the pictures to prove it. A YTR-916, and to my knowledge there are only about 4 or 5 Yamaha bass trumpets in the world. Doug Yeo has one, Yamaha Canada has one, there is probably one somewhere in the Yamaha design archives and one instrument resides at the Yamaha Los Angeles Atelier. It’s a beautiful instrument - 4 rotary valves and nearly 100% handmade. I suppose if we put a price tag on it, somewhere around $4000-$5000 would be the cost. But this one isn’t really for sale. I believe it was made for a Yamaha subsidiary somewhere else in the world, and at the last minute they cancelled the order. Yamaha Japan contacted us to see if we’d want to buy it, and of course we jumped at the chance. If nothing else to actually see what a Yamaha bass trumpet looks like. I’m not sure what we’ll do with this instrument, although it may get rented out from time to time for some specific orchestral literature (like some of the Wagner operas). The bass trumpet is a good example of how we can produce one-of-a-kind specialty instruments along with mass produced student level instruments. Below are more pictures to satisfy your curiosity for what a bass trumpet really looks like.
You don't see much basstrumpet action on youtube, so here's one video. Thanks again to the anon that sent me the hint!
