TW: childhood abuse is mentioned (not in detail), emotional repression, racism is briefly mentioned
People’s main complaints about Giorno is that hes too “in the background” compared to Bucciarati and the rest of then gang, and complain that he has no personality. However, in the first few episodes (before ‘Bucciarati is coming’), hes very expressive and animated. Also in the Notorious B.I.G episode when he was alone from the gang, he was talking to himself about the type of pizza he wants to eat when he goes back to Naples, which he’d never do in front of the gang. (Also Abbaccio wouldve killed him if he heard him say that)
He didn’t join the gang to make friends or anything, he joined because he had a goal that he was dead set on accomplishing. Hence why he would strictly talk to the gang when it involves anything work/mafia related.
And people are forgetting that he was beaten and neglected as a child growing up, while simultaneously being bullied for being Japanese in Italy. The abuse was so bad that he stopped himself from crying almost permanently because he believed that no one was going to help comfort him. Therefore, this repression holds him back from trusting people emotionally, and his low self-esteem makes him believe that no one would bother to help him anyway.
In his childhood, he only has one man who treated him well (Man X), and he never even met him. Naturally, he doesn’t see himself as being deserving of the relationship the gang has with each other. In his mind, he’s just an outcast who’s there to help the gang and himself reach his and Bucciarati’s goal.
• So, in summary, he DOES have a personality, he just:
1) has better things to do
2) doesn’t know how to make emotional bonds because of his childhood abuse
3) his self esteem is low, causing him to believe that no one would want to help him anyway
4) its only briefly shown in the anime
