"Yes, Morisawa-senpai?" Trying to look innocent as he might, Midori couldn't hide his amused grin, and it sort of shows. He doesn't know why Chiaki doesn't want to hear about benches, but, man, that reaction was just too good. - basukebon

"Nothing, nothing, I'm just... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! TAKAMINE HAVE YOU WATCHED KAMEN RIDER BLADE??? The Undead Battle Royale and all??" He grabbed him by his shoulders, excitedly shaking him.

That reaction was good, but was it really worth it? The grin was immediately replaced by a very annoyed groan as Midori closed his eyes in order to not get dizzy from Chiaki shaking him excitedly.

"No, I...don't think so, Morisawa-senpai..." Midori answered, realizing that he was telling his unit leader the truth, and regretting it. "...I mean, isn't that, like, the opposite of what you usually make us watch?"

"Besides, it sounds like [UNDEAD] might enjoy it more than me; why don't you ask them instead of me?"

"And, please, stop shaking me or...or else I'll...I'll put Mr. Eggplant down your shirt...!"

“I think it’s amazing, Takamine!” He stopped bouncing. “You’re supporting Ryuseitai! In your own way, you’re nurturing a burning passion for our unit and what we do, just like everyone else! It’s the flame of justice and maybe the flame of adoring cute things that burns inside you!!”

Chiaki actually calmed down and his smile softened. “It’s just… I think it’s neat. It’s not something I’ve ever done, you know? Bought a lot of merch of us… I think I should probably change that. Because the memories we make, no matter how much we don’t want them to ever go away, sometimes you need a little reminder, right? Especially down the road. And then it’ll be nice to have something concrete to look at that can jog those memories.”

Wow, okay...Midori wasn’t expecting Chiaki to see through him like that.

Unknown to Midori, his face slowly turned red from the embarrassment building up as Chiaki’s words sunk in one by one. He struggled to protest, but his words came out stuttering and stammering, his eyes darting anywhere except on Chiaki; there’s no way he could turn this around so quickly.

It’s not fair.

“Morisawa-senpaaaaiiii...” a flustered Midori whined. Could he turn this around, turn the attention away from him? “H-How...How could...How could you? D-Don’t you know where to get them...??”

If it were possible, Midori would be sweating bullets as his mouth ran the first words that came to mind. There’s just no way he could openly admit it, no way!

“AW!! Really?? That’s so cute, that’s so totally cute!! Aaaaaaaaaaa!! Good boy, Takamine, good boy!!” Now he was definitely bouncing! But still actually kept the respectful distance between them. (Partially because he really didn’t want Midori to yell at him again. He could be loud himself, painfully so, but he still hated it when people yelled at him. It triggered his fight or flight instinct heavily.) 

“I’m happy, I’m happy! You confided in me, Takamine!!” DID YOU GIVE HIM A CHOICE

As expected, Chiaki exploded further into a ball of energy, leaving an exasperated Midori to wonder if and when he’d ever burn out. Although, the very idea sounded like a lost myth. Is it even possible...?

“Well, you didn’t exactly give me much of a choice...” Midori grumpily huffed under his breath in reply. “Come on...I just bought plushies...'S no big deal...” Or is there?

      “ Oh, Shinobu-kun noticed the other day too. I was only trying it out, not to mention I didn’t put it on myself so I don’t want any misunderstandings, but I did consider finding a ‘manlier’ perfume! …Wait, that’s just cologne, isn’t it? Shinobu-kun wanted to find a ‘ninja-like’ perfume, not that I know what that entails, but I’m gonna ask Narukami-senpai for suggestions~ ”

      “ Huh, speaking of… You think either he or Shinkai-senpai picked up on it too? If anything, we could find something that suits you too, Midori-kun~ Shinobu-kun made a good point saying that it’s fine for us to use perfumes since we’re idols and all~ ”

“Cologne? I dunno; you’re asking the wrong guy...” Midori muttered, knowing only the barest knowledge of fragrances. “I couldn’t be bothered to know what it is, just if it smells good or not.” He then shrugged his shoulders with indifference. “Well, if there’s a perfume for ninja---Wait...Wouldn’t that give away his position? I mean, a ninja’s supposed to hide away, right...?”

“My god, I hope not; that guy would just fuss all over me again...!” Midori whined in protest, before pouting at Tetora, not believing what he’d just heard. “Do we really have to...? Though I guess...just a bath isn’t enough after a sweaty day...Uuuugghh...This is gonna be a pain...”

“Okay, man, I’m sorry…” Chiaki kindly let go of him and stepped back, but he bounced excitedly on the balls of his feet, looking expectantly at Midori. Spill all the secrets about the plushies, please? His eyes seemed to beg this very thing…

Chiaki might’ve put some surprisingly noticeable distance between them, but Midori could still feel that burning energy radiating from his senior. Chiaki’s expectant look was returned by Midori’s unamused stare.

He really wants to know that much, huh...

“I can’t believe this...” Midori sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat; Chiaki would never give him any peace until he tells him what his senior wanted to know.

“Fiiiine...I have five sets of our plushies, all editions, and they’re all sitting on a nice shelf above my bed...Are you happy now??”

      “ Oh, so you noticed too, huh? It’s more like Narukami-senpai’s perfume is probably clinging to me after they sprinkled some on my pillow. It’s a ‘healing’ perfume, or something like that? Well, it’s helped me sleep better at night! ”

“It’s kinda hard not to notice...I almost thought I was at the studio when I smelled it.”

“A healing perfume, you say...? Uh-oh...Better not let Morisawa-senpai hear that; I dun wanna have to use perfumes...”

“Tetora-kun seems to smell kinda...sweet lately. Is he wearing perfume...?”

Midori was right in feeling a sense of dread indeed, because Chiaki lit up more and more, his earlier nervousness dispersing and his grin widening to obnoxious levels. He stepped on over to Midori and slapped his hands down on his shoulders, laughing.

“ATTA BOY!! That’s it, that’s it!! Yes, we’re kept together! Never separated! Because that’s what Ryuseitai is!! HAHAHAHAH!!!”

Why did he open his mouth again...

Midori rolled his eyes when Chiaki was back to his obnoxiously energetic self once again, and so quickly at that. He didn’t feel like he’d recovered enough of his energy spent from fending off Chiaki’s inquiries just moments ago.

“Ow...Watch iiit...” Midori whined when hands clapped unto his shoulders with gusto. “And stop that; you’re embarrassing meee...”

Can the ground reclaim him from where he stood, please?

“I’m sorry…” Chiaki had shrunk quite impressively, shoulders pulled up to his ears and he shuffled awkwardly for a moment. But eventually he relaxed and perked up.

“But can you tell me how many Kanata plushies you have? And Nagumo? And Sengoku??”

Stop that; you’re looking so pathetic now, Morisawa-senpai...

However, instead of saying his thoughts aloud, Midori pouted at Chiaki in response to more of his questions. At least he’s not being annoying about it anymore...

“What kind of question is that...” Midori sighed, feeling some dread at the back of his mind for what he’s about to say. “They’re all the same number...”

“I...”

“I...don’t think it’d be fair to have a mismatched set...”

Midori groaned, wiping his flustered face with his cardigan sleeves as though it’ll rub away the embarrassed red coloring from his cheeks.

“Why did I have to answer that stupid question...” Now, the person he least wanted to know the truth knows about it!

“Magic fire!!” Some wires were a bit crossed. “THE SUN OF LIFE!! The flames of passion!!” Shhh…

He did quiet down on his own though, a smile slowly spreading across his face as he listened to Midori go on about the plushies. 

“…Not me, that’s for sure.” Shudder! Ghosts…

Chiaki’s outburst of his trademark intro just earned him a heavily judgmental stare from Midori. “Are you even listening to me, Morisawa-senpai? You don’t even have real fire magic...” which might be a good idea, considering Midori’s own element, which can easily catch fire. “And this is real, not acting...! I’m serious!”

Midori huffed his irritation away, taking it out on his fries by munching on them grumpily. “Good,” he said through a mouthful of fries, “cuz those ghost plushies are mine...”

He had thrown the eggplant away from himself, and it lay there on the ground, and it seemed to him like it was staring at him accusingly, plotting its revenge… Chiaki knew somewhere that he was over-exaggerating. 

“A-a-attack…? Yeah. Yeah, I know!! I know! Do something, Takamine!”

That poor eggplant; the flesh was sure to bruise later after being thrown to the ground like that. Midori knew this was coming to the vegetable, but he still went on with the prank.

“Hai, haiii...I’m on it...” Midori droned, going over to pick up the eggplant from the ground. However, instead of keeping it back into his bag, the taller boy started dusting the dirt off the vegetable’s shiny skin. “Oh, my poor monster...What had that hero done to you...” he started talking to it like it was some hurt pet.

Watching super sentai show reruns again, and it still amazes him how differently those heroes do things compared to magical boys like him.

On the other hand, they’re not really that different, looking deeper into things---

“I know, I know. From car accidents or things falling on your head by accident or just tripping in the stairs or anything, right? You’re talking with one of the clumsiest guys in school, okay? I know that! But there’s a difference between that and… Fighting against bad guys who’re all magic and stuff.” Chiaki gently poked Midori’s arm at that.

That was a sweet smile, and Chiaki found himself staring for a moment, confused. What was he even talking about right now? For some reason, it was difficult to remember… Huh? What? 

“…Rewards, huh? Good ones, yeah?”

“I don’t think I was talking about you, but,” a fry was munched through pouty lips, “at least you understand??” Midori then sighed, scratching at his temple. Did Chiaki have to poke him like that? “I think we’re just going in circles...Uhh...You can only fight fire with fire, so you can only fight magic with magic. Just happens that way.”

Midori was oblivious to Chiaki’s staring, that small smile widening as Midori thought he was given a chance to talk about his ‘rewards’. “They’re really good!” the taller boy began, giddy. “I get plushies, and they’re really sooo cute~”

“Who would’ve thought that big, scary ghosts can be so cute when caught~?”

“Chained” - It was worth a try, maybe, or at least in theory, given how Morisawa-senpai would react. Midori wasn’t sure how this would go nor how it would end up, but seeing that smiling face, beaming so brightly, so unselfishly at him, it was annoyiiiiing. So, when Midori was sure that Chiaki wasn’t looking, he slipped a whole, fresh, raw eggplant into his senior’s pocket. He had warned him before, so this ‘counterattack’ should be legit.

“So, that’s why I think, Takamine, that we…” Hm? What was this extra weight he felt? What was this bulge that appeared all of a sudden! (NAUGHTY D:) Highly confused, Chiaki stopped his ongoing monologue and pushed his hand into his pocket, finding a smooth, waxy surface of something… Soft…? He pulled the eggplant up and shrieked. 

Wow, Chiaki could really shriek---Wait, what was he thinking; of course Chiaki would shriek so loudly...He’s loud! Midori uncovered his ears, fighting the urge to snort. He’d warned his senpai that he would put an eggplant in his pocket if Chiaki would annoy him so much, and today was such an occasion.

How can he smile so much like that? So cheerful; it’s like Chiaki was giving his all into that smile, the way he’s trying to include Midori into everything, even if Midori had no interest...It’s just impossible, unfair...

Midori couldn’t stand it.

“Oh, no...It’s an eggplant, Morisawa-senpai...” Midori said, attempting to sound alarmed, but he just couldn’t even muster up the effort to do so. “Careful; it might attack you...”
