but really, how come no one ever seems to bring up Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, the semi-legendary roman politician who retired to his farm, and then was demanded to come back and be an absolute dictator during a crisis, and then gave up his unlimited authority to retire back to his farm again after only sixteen days? (what if the crisis lasted much longer?)
i think "relinquishing absolute power for some humble calling" is kind of a Thing, as far as storytelling goes, especially when you're trying to depict someone as a moral authority. its not so much that farming is easy, its that culturally, farming is seen as a morally good profession. giving up authority willingly is also seen as morally good. so i think its kind of that, especially when you add in his crusades-era ideas about what astertes should do "after the war is over". man's obsessed with "after"s
i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while
