How do you think Bruce's view of Steph has changed over her Preboot history?
Well, that’s the weird thing about the handling of Steph from the time she first appeared in Detective Comics all the way to her Batgirl (2009-2011) title: Bruce held the same view of her despite her acknowledged character growth. Which made no sense from Bruce’s end because in that same time he took in a lot of additional partners and sidekicks, even reformed several villainous rogues to Fight the Good Fight but kept being ridiculously judgmental and ready to set Stephanie up for failure.
I mean, there were good moments where Bruce’s more consistently good characterization shined through, one that comes to mind is Batman: Gotham Knights (2000-2006) #22 which is a whole issue basically dedicated to showing how Bruce and Stephanie really could work as a balanced team that could use each other to help emotionally grow. But they are far outnumbered, and almost immediately undone every time – usually within the very same books a few issues later – by some of the most manipulative and cruel stuff Bruce has ever done to any character. Which brings stuff like Batman: Gotham Knights (2000-2006) #37 to mind. An entire issue where Bruce set up a scenario where Stephanie could not have possibly won and then threw her failure into her face (even admitting that he didn’t trust her to be able to figure it out until the end) as an excuse for why he wanted her off “his” streets. Oh. And by the way, he did this while Steph had been dealing with the very complicated feelings she had after having just been told her father died on a Suicide Squad mission. No. Really.
[Batman: Gotham Knights (2000-2006) #37]
Bruce would follow this up by trying to forbid Steph’s best friend (Cassandra Cain) and, to some extent, boyfriend (Tim Drake) from having anything to do with her. Because isolating her socially was apparently the Batman thing to do to a grieving child, too.
He would then go on to make her Robin temporarily (… in a scheme revealed in-canon to be an attempt to make retired Tim jealous and want to come back) and, in a retcon I take severe issues with, tell Cass in his will to leave the Batgirl mantle to Stephanie even though that would have been Babs and Cass’ decision to make but nope, Batman has to micromanage everything.
Which leads us to his support of Steph as Batgirl.
It’s technically an improvement, but like only the most technicality way you can derive because the first thing he did when he came back from the dead was to put Steph through another of his “tests” for her character and skill, which to his credit he at least didn’t make another no-win scenario. But, again, this was only after – just before his “death” – he hadn’t used Steph to do the same damn thing to Tim again and almost permanently do damage to Steph and Tim’s already fragile relationship.
Steph got to slap Bruce in that issue, though? So I guess at least she learned to be completely done with his bullshit. And Bruce got to learn… nothing.
It’s also the issue where we learn Bruce has complete and utter disregard for any emotional concern for his adopted daughter, Cass, too, though. So I guess at least he bothered to check on Stephanie compared to others after his return. (I really, really do not understand why people love The Return of Bruce Wayne: Batgirl so much, it’s so awful to all the characters and the retcon of who was responsible for making Steph Batgirl only makes everything more douchey).
So… How does Bruce’s opinion of Stephanie evolve throughout the preboot? Kind of amazingly, it almost doesn’t at all.
Steph, Tim, and Cass alternate throughout the 90s and 2000s as to who is getting the shaft with Bruce’s treatment of them throughout their time as his sidekicks/charges, but while Tim and Cass eventually get something out of the ordeal (even if it was later reneged because comics), Steph’s positive treatment from Bruce is gone back on almost immediately.
That’s honestly part of why I was pretty pleased by today’s Detective Comics – there seems to be at least some attempt from the start to address that problem from the preboot.
[Detective Comics (2011- ) #934]
There’s a promise there of not having to rehash the same Bruce-Steph relationship (or Bruce-sidekick relationship at all) we had to deal with for two decades without a proper resolution, and if they manage to fulfill that at all then they can count on my readership.
But in general, since the 2011 reboot I honestly do feel like Batman has been a better and more consistent character in regards to writers no longer feeling the 90s and early 2000s need to make him a complete jerk to the people who he relies on most to make him “edgy” and “cool”, which was what those relationships between Tim, Cass, Steph, and Bruce were hurt by the most.
That makes all of this promising, at least to me.

There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
Can somebody make some Arkham knight living with his militia headcanons? Those are my favorite <3

Alfred: Yeah sure whatever

ENG: Definitely, I’m living a true Batmania! After the sketch I posted about#CarrieKelley in her #Robin suit, I was dying for working a little more about this character but this time in full color, hope you like it! Stay tuned, this is the first of many scenes I want to work about #Batman’s universe, or at least I hope!
