I'm actually really interested in when people say "Goth is about politics" but then never explain what said politics are and where you can source it in the 80s.
Like obviously the subcultures comes from sexual liberation and individual freedom, but could you show me an 80s goth band whos MO was specifically "leftist"? Because that's what people mean when they're saying "Goth has politics". Honestly I can see the opposite most the time with goth's political outlook, like as much as I love Rozz Williams, he straight up had a nazi phase.
I'd argue since the goth movement started is was veering away from the more DIY elements of punk and was in contrast to the highly political anarcho punk and its offshoots.
I wish people were more honest about goth instead of trying to whitewash it cuz theres a great conection to queer theory with how goth has historically existed but all people want to focus on is vague leftsit ideas that lack any substance or context in the subculture.
Every single time I do a gig most people who describe themselves as goth who show up look alot more like goths did in the 80s and 90s than the modern "trad goth" style. Most of the modern "trad goths" trend is just be influences whos main conection to the subculture is online.
I'd also argue even though a large amount are into the music, the visual media of tiktok leans into visual style rather then the actual music itself.
From my own experience young goths are just non existant at shows for smaller bands especially. I appreciate the middle aged and older audiences that do show up but I do wish more young people would come participate in the most important part of the subculture.

Laurence Romanini, widely known as "Roma," is a foundational figure in the French gothic rock scene, best known as the drummer and a founding member of Corpus Delicti. Formed in Nice in 1992, the band became a legendary quartet in the darkwave and post-punk genres, with Romanini's driving, atmospheric percussion anchoring their most celebrated works: Twilight (1993), Sylphes (1994), and Obsessions (1995). Beyond her musical contributions, she remains an enduring icon of 1990s gothic aesthetics and subculture.
