the essence of dick grayson was his logicality, it defined him in good and bad ways. some of the bad outweighed the good, but it was his rationality that separated him from others. however, in response to her words he feels a sharp tug at his heart and it’s suddenly a struggle to swallow. they sting a little, of course, she’s angry. fine, he wasn’t going to stop her from feeling so. but this matter of logic; logic had no place in it, even though his brain is screaming of course he couldn’t get rid of her and vice verse. they were linked in ways time and space could not intervene with. but even so, his mind feels clouded and there’s something somewhere in him making his heart race with worry because what if he did lose her one day and time and space finally won ? what if he ended up pushing her away for good the next time for the sake of good ? what was good, was it worth it the last time, if she had gone anyway ? his thoughts are jumbled, they always were around her, and without another clear thought dick has engulfed her in his arms, his head finds its spot in her hair and closes his eyes. a sigh of relief passes through him, muscles relaxing into her warmth momentarily. he wasn’t going to explain this to her, he didn’t need to, and eventually pulls away with a warm gaze in his eyes.
❛ yeah, you make sure to do that, ❜ he replied playfully with a short nod. he can sense the genuine annoyance in her tone but this was dick grayson handling the situation, was he ever going to let up ? the answer was no. he leaned back onto his feet slightly, watching as she collected a sample from the zombie. there’s a quick be careful on the tip of his tongue, but he bites it down harshly. old habits die hard. dick had the exact same idea in mind, but she had seemed to beat him to it clearly. not that he minded watching her work, he never had. dick’s not surprised at her reply, he expected something along the lines of no; lifting his shoulders, he held out his hands as he spoke, ❛ that’s disappointing. i guess i’ll have to wait until there’s no work left then, ❜ he said slowly, a knowing look in his eyes and a hint of a smile present. he’d wait as long as needed for her to forgive him, forever if it came to it.
she wanted to hate him - she wished she could hate him because it would have been so much easier to put distance between the two of them if she could just forget about everything that he made her feel. but she couldn’t. because no matter what he did, not matter what she did, it was always going to be dick greyson for barbara gordon. his name was always going to be seared into her soul and her life. but that didn’t mean she would allow him back into her life without a fight. he didn’t get to leave her, take a part of her with him, and come back and act like nothing happened. the day he died, a piece of her was shattered. and she couldn’t just forgive that. she didn’t have that in her. and he couldn’t expect her to. she opened her mouth to start yelling - not knowing how to respond to him when he had that look in his eye. when his arms wrapped around her, she nearly melted. she allowed herself to be held by him. she slipped her arms around his waist, her head resting against his chest for a long moment. this didn’t mean they were good, this didn’t mean that he was forgiven, it didn’t mean anything other than what the two of them already knew - they needed each other. they would always need each other.
when he pulled back, she instantly let go. she didn’t nee to wipe her eyes - she had cried far too much since his death, she didn’t know if she was capable of it at this point. before he could speak, she held a finger to his lips. “ i’m still furious at you, dick greyson. so don’t you dare get cocky on me, you understand?” she asked, both of them knowing that the question didn’t leave any wiggle room for an answer. she nodded, pursing her lips ever so slightly. “ don’t tell me what to do, dick,” she teased. it was easy to fall back into their routine, even though tension still hung heavy in the air between them. “ well, no one can say that you aren’t determined, now can they? ” she stared at him, clearly deciding if she was going to allow him to accompany her for the rest of her work. she could use another set of hands - but then again, it was dick. that could prove to be both an advantage and a disadvantage. one the one hand, she was incredibly annoyed with him, but on the other, no one knew how she worked better than he did - save for bruce. she nodded her head, glaring at his hands for a moment. “ are you offering to help or are you just going to get in my way? ” she asked, settling on the backs of her feet.
