bastard stupid

swears are your language and crime is your profession. your reason for doing just about anything is because you could, no matter how stupid it was. why did you set that fence on fire? to watch it burn. why did you put that bug in your mouth? to see what it tastes like. why did you teach that kid to say fuck? it's funny. keeping you around is like housing a cartoon villain but at least you know how to pick locks so that's a reason to let you stay.

Kaidan approached Ryan quietly, giving him a concerned look. Then, he wrapped his arms around him, frowning.

he stiffens, initially.

not that he expects kaidan to hurt him in any way, and not that it's even unwelcome, but shepard isn't...used to hugging. not by other people that aren't his siblings. or anderson.

commander shepard is always at the top of his game, as far as everyone in the galaxy is concerned. he's never tired, never worried, never scared. never doubtful. what could he possibly need a hug for?

problem is, no one ever thinks about ryan shepard, and his needs. or, almost no one. it feels...nice, to be seen. to be treated as a human instead of larger-than-life.

he relaxes.

“good to hear.” because he is glad neither of them were seriously injured, especially williams what with the beacon and all. he seems to have taken the brunt of that, at least, even if he only vaguely remembers the damn thing overloading and exploding. he nods at the mention of jenkins, not really having the words to comfort the other man about his death but understanding his feelings about it.

“he’ll, uh…definitely be missed.” is all he can somewhat awkwardly manage.

“Thanks for your concern, sir.” Kaidan gave the man a nod, stiff body at attention. About Jenkins, he knew some people reacted to death in many different ways. But it seemed like the Commander had mistakenly taken Kaidan’s comment as request to be reassured – at least, that was what he could think of. Kaidan was sad, yes, but he was more worried about Shepard’s mental state now than himself.

“It’s okay, Commander. I didn’t like the situation, but there was nothing we could have done. Still, you’re fine and managed to save the colony.”

he takes a moment to eye the other man, then frowns slightly. "unclench, alenko. i'm not going to bite your head off if you relax a little." alliance regs and all, but shepard doesn't see the point in being so formal when all they're doing is talking. granted, his reputation does proceed him, but still. they're just talking.

"yeah, situation was fucked soon as we got there. and only got worse." jenkins had already been mentioned, but they can't forget about nihlus getting killed too. "saved the colony but the beacon got destroyed after burning visions into my brain. not my best mission report."
