Do you believe he should have been found legally insane?

In my view during the time I wrote this Dahmer should not have been found legally insane.

The standard for legal insanity (typically based on the M'Naghten rule) hinges on whether the defendant, at the time of the crime, was unable to understand the nature of their actions or distinguish right from wrong. In the US court (I believe) you cannot claim insanity just because you have a mental illness. The defense must prove that your illness made you completely unable to understand that what you were doing was wrong. Dahmer clearly knew his actions were wrong and illegal. His careful planning, efforts to destroy evidence, and steps to avoid the police prove he was fully aware of the unlawfulness and consequences of his behavior. He knew that what he was doing was wrong and that he was taking another human life. I believe they used the fact that he wore condoms to have sex with the dead bodies to determine whether or not he was sane, too.

From a medical standpoint, however, it's different. He was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizotypal Personality Disorder, and Necrophilia. Now, these conditions distorted his personality and sexual impulses, but not his grasp on reality. Because he did not suffer from psychosis, meaning he had no delusions or hallucinations, he did not hear any voices telling him to do all those heinous acts. He was medically disordered but still legally sane and criminally responsible.

Legally and medically insane is different. I also remember John Wayne saying that "if Dahmer is sane then I'd hate like hell to run into the guy who is insane" or something like that.

👮🏻‍♂️ 35 years ago today, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested:

At 11:30 PM on July 22, 1991, police officers Rolf Mueller and Robert Rauth were flagged down by a frantic, handcuffed 32-year-old Tracy Edwards on patrol at Kilbourn Avenue. The officers tried to unlock the cuff, but their key didn't fit. After their unsuccessful attempt, they asked Edwards to lead them back to where he had been handcuffed: an apartment building at 924 North 25th.

Upon arriving at apartment 213, 31-year-old Jeffrey Dahmer, opened the door and invited them in. When questioned about the handcuffs, Dahmer admitted to placing them on Edwards and pointed to the bedroom, claiming the key was inside. As Officer Mueller retreated to the bedroom to investigate, Dahmer suddenly moved toward the room, prompting Officer Rauth to tell him to "back off." In the bedroom, Mueller noticed a large knife, as mentioned by Edwards, under the bed. He also saw an open top chest drawer containing Polaroid photos of naked men. Upon closer inspection, Mueller discovered, to his horror, that many of the Polaroids depicted severed heads and bodies in various stages of dismemberment.

Mueller returned to the living room, Polaroids in hand, and stated, "These are real pictures." Rauth then moved to restrain Dahmer, causing both men to fall to the floor in a struggle. Dahmer resisted, reaching back and pinching Officer Rauth's thigh, causing Rauth to cry out in pain. Mueller joined to help subdue Dahmer. The officers called for backup, and Officer Schoessow arrived to find Dahmer pinned to the ground. Schoessow retrieved handcuffs from his car, and Jeffrey Dahmer was placed under arrest.

🗞 Dahmer and the Fish Factory

📋 One of Jeffrey Dahmer's hobbies that was not taxidermy was simply taking care of fish in his aquarium. In his aquarium, Dahmer bred African cichlids and tiger barbs, and in the pet store, he could not take his eyes off a fish called Fugu. He said that he was fascinated by its eyes because they were "like human eyes", and he thought it was very cute. Dahmer stated it was a nice and decent hobby of his and that he would feed them in the mornings and at night—always liking to see them swim around.

Dahmer would go to The Fish Factory, located at 9218 W. Oklahoma Ave. in West Allis, Wisconsin. He was a regular at the store.

"He was a very nice guy,” said store owner, Stephen Banach. “Soft-spoken and polite. If you met him, you’d never think anything of it.” Banach says Dahmer was always a polite customer who rode a city bus to and from The Fish Factory to buy fish or aquarium supplies.

One day, Dahmer asked for a fish tank to be delivered to his apartment. “At that time in the 1980s, no one was really delivering things like that, so I told him we don’t do that,” said Banach. “I had a young Asian gentleman who worked here at the time, as a part-time employee, and Dahmer pointed to him and said he’d like him to deliver it. I think a week later he got caught.”

Banach stated that he was shocked when he saw his regular customer on the news being called the "Milwaukee Cannibal" or the "Bone Collector" as well. How could a man so gentle, quiet, and kept to himself create such a monstrosity in a small, humble apartment? And even worse: Banach saw the aquarium he sold to Dahmer in the newspapers. “It was what was in that aquarium that still freaks me out,” said Banach. “I saw a couple of big piranhas and two skulls. But they weren’t the kind of skulls I sell in my store as aquarium accessories. I could tell they were real human skulls.”

Are there any sources about Lionel's plans of sending JD to conversion therapy? I've read a comment on Reddit talking about it, but it could've been made up.

Yes, Dahmer's father, Lionel, spoke about this in an interview with Stone Phillips. Lionel stated that he would have intended to send Dahmer to conversion therapy if he had known his son was homosexual. Here is the full transcription:

Stone P: If Jeff had come to you, and said "Dad, I am a homosexual." How would you have reacted? Lionel D: I think I would have started in on a program to try to change his thinking. Stone P: So you would have been accepting? Lionel D: No, no. Stone P: Do you believe to this day that he is as a homosexual living in a state of sin? Lionel D: If you believe in the inspired word of God, which I do, that is sin. It's repugnant to God. Stone P: Do you think Jeff was ashamed of his homosexuality? Lionel D: I think so. Stone P: He certainly hid it from you. Lionel D: Mhm. He sure did.

NOTE: I fixed the second part. The Camel cigarettes were not his favorite brand. He smoked them because it was what Pat. Kennedy, the detective of his case, smoked and had with him during interrogations. He used to ask for Pat's cigarettes when he was "having a nicotine attack" as he called his urge to smoke.

If for some reason every source of information on the case were destroyed and only one could be saved, which would you choose (exempting police and court records, to make it harder)?

Hi, Ishmael! Now you have got me thinking… If I could save just one thing, knowing that all police and court records were lost, I would choose all the photographs taken by his family or his clothes. Yes, his clothes. I know his hush puppies shoes were ugly but hey, let me be.

If police and court records could be saved, then I would choose all recordings of his voice. But since they can't, I am left only with the option to save his photographs. At first, I thought, 'Well… Jeffrey himself is a source!' But then I remembered I am not a 1990s homicide detective typing away on a typewriter in 1990, but rather a student sitting behind a laptop in 2026, so saving him is impossible. So, given that, I would definitely go for all his photographs… that's for sure!

Your question is somewhat difficult. I don't recall any details. Yes, he sent very provocative letters and cards to his male pen pals. He asked them for photos; I imagine that satisfied him. There's a reason he always asked for pictures of their faces and bodies. And I imagine he did all of this alone, without any guards in sight. Jeff himself said, "His lust knew no bounds."🔥

Do you think that, at any point in his life, he had serious plans for the future?

Hi, Ishmael!

Hmm... now, that's a tricky question.

I do not think he ever harbored serious ambitions for his life; he was simply drifting, going wherever the wind blew him.

However, I recall that he wrote about some small plans that were not serious during his time in the Oxford Apartments to his mother when he was in prison (back when he was still keeping a semblance of "control" before succumbing completely to his wishes).

He seemed devoid of any real vision for the future during his high school years, and the same lack of direction characterized his brief collegiate experience. His military service offered no further clarity, and let's not even talk about Miami. He finally got his life back on "track" when he was with his grandmother; I think we all know that. He had a job, went to church, and lived with her. For two years, he managed to keep himself at bay. But by neglecting his homosexual preference, he suffocated himself. Of course, like any volcano, he erupted with all his sexual desires and burned to ashes everything he had built until then.

After the Ambassador Hotel incident, nothing was normal for him and life started to decline. Then he moved to the Oxford Apartments. I know that yes, during the Oxford Apartments he completely lost himself and bathed in blood, but in the letter sent to his mother mentioned before we can see those small plans:

The letter suggests he was thinking of moving to "Califf" as he said. But it wasn’t "serious" at all since he did not do anything to pursue and nurture his curiosity on jobs around that area and their payments. Also, he even told his probation officer, Donna Chester, that he bought a computer and was going to show up to classes. He wanted to learn how to use his PC and bought a manual too, but that doesn’t exactly count as serious plans for his life. I appreciate it if someone has Chester's annotation on this since he told her about it in a session.

Jeff did not have a big image of himself and therefore did not help himself. Donna Chester wrote that he expected others to help him when he was the only one who could do such a thing.

There were no genuine plans for a future in my opinion... he was man trying to simulate a normal human life while drowning in his own isolation. He was a spectator of his own ruins. Still, we can see that he was not completely passive and had some minor plans.
