So this is BRILLIANT
It’s so important to me that he says “Dr. Captain Ryland Grace” when sending the Beatles back to Earth. Because the Hail Mary was made for a Captain, a Scientist, and an Engineer. And Grace only claims the Captain and Scientist parts. Because Rocky is the Engineer! Rocky is the Hail Mary’s Engineer!!!
"This is Dr. Captain Ryland Grace reporting from the Hail Mary."
No, Eridians do not hate Earth or Stratt for sending Grace on a suicide mission. They understand that they were desperate and did not have the means to do it any other way, even if they wish the situation for Grace could've been better.
ROCKY however does hate them. He is holding a very personal grudge, because Grace won't. How dare they hurt Grace? How dare they abandon him?
Would you force a person into a spaceship to die, against their will?
No?
What if it was the only chance to save all of humanity?
Maybe?
What if the person was a vicious war-criminal with the blood of many people on their hands?
Yes?
What if that criminal was indoctrinated as a child? And the main crime they're charged with was an accident?
Maybe?
What if there was almost no chance sending them would save the world and a 100% chance they'd die?
No?
My favourite thing about the whole bloodymary / project hail mary + iron lung similarities is that it brings up this trolley-problem-esque ethical quandary then really pushes to find where the line is for people.
Grace and Simon both have panic attacks, that's no surprise, but both have opposite methods of calming each other down.
Grace, due to being manhandled onto the ground, HATES being touched during a panic attack. Simon keeps his distance, instead just talks. Talks about random things, plants, facts, just anything. It keeps Grace grounded on Simon's voice, especially when Simon has him focus on the present rather than the past or future. He has Grace breath, touch the ground, and just talks until Grace is better.
Simon, due to his hallucinations and his fear of his now domestic reality is fake, Needs touch. He needs to make sure the plants are real, the stars are real, that Grace is real. Grace and Simon hold each other as Simon focuses everything on Grace, his breathing, where his arms wrap around, where his torso is, where his head rests. To feel, to hear, to be near Grace that makes him realize that everything is fine, Grace is real, plants are real, and the stars are alive.
Rocky: we built our spaceship by unifying every mind on the planet to create a super hive mind, pooling out collective knowledge and problem solving skills to come up with a plan.
Grace: we gave the scariest woman I've ever met two coffees every morning, an unlimited budget, and enough legal immunity to cuss out any world leaders she wanted to and boy did she want to.
I think it’s really cool that in Project Hail Mary the astrophage, which are literally killing all life by eating stars, aren’t really treated as the villain or evil? From the very start Ryland is treating it with curiosity and fascination, wanting to understand more than destroy.
One of the most memorable scenes in the movie is when he’s IN the Petrova Line, and he’s having a moment. Because it’s beautiful. It’s destroying galaxies, uncountable lives, but it’s still beautiful.
The astrophage is a problem, yes, but it’s treated as any other organism. It’s just doing what it does, because it’s also alive and happens to eat stars. Ryland is just happy to have the chance to study it because it’s from space.
rocky learns human philosphy
Just finished rereading Project Hail Mary again and it’s really interesting that Stratt is not a scientist. She’s an administrator, a politician, a leader. Not a scientist. She’s surrounded by some of the smartest people in the world, and they’re speaking in very science-y terms, and she has no idea what is going on. So what does she do? She turns to Grace and asks him to explain it to her. And he does, he explains the very complicated stuff in a way she, a non-scientist, can understand, because he’s a teacher. That’s what he does. It works very well from a narrative perspective because you, the reader, also don’t know what all this stuff means, so Grace explaining it to Stratt also explains it to you. But I also think maybe this is part of the reason Grace became so important to Project Hail Mary, why Stratt dragged him around everywhere- and she really does take him everywhere with her- not in spite of the fact that he’s a junior high school teacher, but because of it.
