what? Birthday sleepover n Bay gets her mark. Spoiler alert: its El.
Bay flopped down on her bed, at least attempting to pretend that she wasn’t counting down the seconds to her sixteenth birthday, and simultaneously pretending she wasn’t absolutely terrified of the moment it happened. Admittedly, she’d been disappointed since Dustin’s mark had come in showing his soulmate was older than he was and her hopes were somewhat crushed. She’d since resolved that whoever her soulmate was, she didn’t know him yet. But knowing herself, she was still terrified of the unknown and needed someone with her to hold her and/or be the first one to look at the mark when Bay couldn’t bring to do it, thus inviting Eleanor over the night. “Do you wanna watch a movie or something?” she asked aloud, pulling herself out of her own thoughts. “I can’t handle just sitting here waiting.”
Eleanor sat on Bay’s bedroom floor, watching her lie on her bed, stressing about getting her mark the second she turned sixteen. She found it somewhat amusing. Eleanor was ecstatic when she had gotten her mark almost two months ago but Bay was definitely not her. “Yeah, sure! What movie do you wanna watch?” she asked, moving herself from the floor to join Bay on her bed. “Yeah, I get it. This is exciting, though! You’re finally gonna find out who your soulmate is. And who knows? Maybe it’s someone you already know!”
Bay sat up to look at Eleanor when the weight on her bed shifted as Eleanor sat down. “I don’t know,” Bay groaned, knowing that no matter what they watched it couldn’t provide enough of a distraction from her current state. She grimaced at Eleanor’s next comment. “Exciting?” she questioned, raising her eyebrows. “More like terrifying.” She sighed and lied back down, staring at her ceiling. “The only guy I know is Dustin and his mark is Becky Baker, so.”
Eleanor looked away in thought. “The Sisterhood of Night, maybe? I know it’s your favorite. We can pretend your mark is Jeff Johns,” she suggested, laughing. “I mean, yeah, it’s scary too, but it’s a sixteen year long question that’s finally being answered!” Eleanor looked at her own mark on the inside of her forearm.” He’s the only guy you’re friends with, but know of other guys.”
Bay let out another sigh. “I could only dream of a boy like Jeff Johns,” she said in a jokingly wistful voice. “Will you kiss a corpse for me, Jeff Johns?” she questioned, placing a hand over her heart and letting out a deep chuckle before sitting back up again. “I’d be happy for the universe to not decide my soulmate for me,” Bay responded with a roll of her eyes. “He’s the only guy whose mark I know so it’s not like I’d recognize anyone else’s mark even if I do know of them.”
Eleanor laughed as Bay pined for a fictional character. “Yeah, it does kind of take the choice out of the matter. I like that, though. There’s no question once you’re marked. You know that that person is your soulmate and you’re their’s. There’s no uncertainty,” she explained, a dreamy look on her face. “Isn’t that nice? It takes the stress out of it.”
Bay shook her head. “Nice isn’t the word I’d use. I think it’s more stressful. Like, if you don’t already know them, when you do meet, there’s all this sudden pressure to be the most important person in their life. Even if you do know them, how can you expect that much from someone?”
Eleanor tilted her head to the side, taking Bay’s words into consideration. “Yeah... okay, that makes sense. I guess I’m just a romantic,” she replied, shrugging and smiling. “Let’s watch the movie, yeah? It’ll take you mind off of things until it comes.”
Bay gave a small nod before settling back into her bed, attempting again to relax. Still, her attention kept focusing back to the alarm clock on her bedside table, the minutes until her exact birthday ticking away both too quickly and not fast enough. She let out a mingled sigh and gasp when she felt a slight burning sensation on her arm. “Oh god,” she mumbled, looking away and shoving her arm toward Eleanor. “You have to look, I can’t.”
Eleanor jumped at the opportunity to be the first one to see the mark on Bay’s arm. She excitedly pushed up Bay’s sleeve to see the mark forming on her arm. Eleanor’s smile started to fade when it fully came in. “Oh,” she said. “That’s not what I was expecting.”
Bay’s head quickly turned back to her friend,s till afraid to look down at the mark for herself . “What? Do you know who it is?”
Eleanor let out a sort of laugh of disbelief. “Uh, yeah,” she said, pushing up her own sleeve to show Bay her now blue outline of a star on her arm. “It’s me.”
Bay finally looked down at Eleanor’s arm and then over to her own before letting out a sigh of relief followed by a chuckle. “Oh, thank God,” she looked up at her ceiling.
Eleanor laughed again, a little confused this time. “Relieved it’s someone you know?”
Bay sighed again. “Relieved it’s you!” she responded enthusiastically. “A platonic soulmate makes everything easier.”
Eleanor raised her eyebrows in surprise. “Oh! Yeah, for sure,” she agreed half-heartedly. “Leaves your whole romantic future a fun little mystery. And hey! I guess we’ll be friends forever!”
Bay smiled sweetly back at El. “Exactly,” she agreed before settling back down, cuddling closer to the other girl to continue watching the movie.
Eleanor’s smile quickly faded as she rested her head on Bay’s. She had almost forgotten: Bay was straight.
