Things you don’t do at the pet-store
You don’t yell at the employees about a sick fish that is in a tank clearly set up as a Hospital Tank. Screaming at them about a sick fish looking off doesn’t help either. I seriously don’t get this. I’ve had to move a sick fish to a new location and cover the entire thing up to stop people from bugging me every half hour, some of them screaming at me as though that will somehow make things better. Same people screaming often are banging their knuckles onto the glass to try to make the fish move. AS IF THAT IS GOING TO HELP ANYTHING. :c
If a fish is not looking well, chances are the people working actually know about it! Fish recovering from illness is no different than any other animal. It takes patience and time. This is like…the first time I’ve had people literally yell at me about something like this.
Every single animal that comes into a pet-store has the potential to come down sick right after wards(it’s related to stress/shipping the transit causes stress which lowers their immune system). Sometimes even long term residents can get ill too. Where I work the animals get proper care, and I have full access to pretty much what ever medication is actually going to get the tank better. I’ve restored badly beaten up predators back to good condition, healed ripped fins, helped turn bad septicemia upon arrival cases around, and even if it didn’t work I still remember spending over an hour flushing the fins of a giant arowana that came in via drop off in severely questionable conditions. I do everything and anything to get these animals in top condition. It’s so irksome for someone to come in and then treat me like I’m garbage because one fish isn’t looking well and his problems are not easy to fix, or fast. ;/
Sorry you had drama…
Ahhh, it’s okay. It’s part of retail I guess. (not that it’s really okay to me, I still find it sad that American culture normalizes this kind of tantrum throwing behavior that many adults use to get their way towards retail).
It’s so strange though. For the most part I don’t see these kinds of people but once in a blue moon where I work(for that I am infinitely grateful because really I can’t complain compared to what other types of retail deal with). This past week and a half, it’s as though a bunch of angry people crawled out the wood-work looking for any excuse to get aggressive.
Tension from all the politics possibly being taken out on an unexpected victim? I feel like there is an understood sense of entitlement in our country that allows for an interesting week no matter what the profession. Perhaps it is a feeling of ineffectuality that drives people to act that way to someone they perceive as "there to take my bs.".
I have not worked retail for several years and I'm happy about that.
