★☆☆☆☆  LMAO! This was wild. Having never gone through the matchmaking process myself, I learned the differences and similarities from watching with both my Pakistani and Indian friends. Sima Aunty means well but yikes your misogyny is showing!

★★★☆☆  I really enjoyed this movie! The accents are terrible but it’s a lot of fun and I imagine it is a great snapshot of a South Asian’s experience immigrating to America in the 70′s.

A young Indian man relocates to 1970s Chicago to become an engineer, but when his job falls through, resorts to an elaborate charade with misfit friends in order to woo his childhood sweetheart. Directed by Lena Khan, written by Khan and Sameer Gardezi, and starring Danny Pudi, Jon Heder, Rizwan Manji, Karen David.

Blinded by the Light 2019 ‧ Drama/Comedy ‧ 1h 58m

★★★★☆  I loved this move. It’s a musical and so cheesy but extremely heartfelt and although it takes place in England in the 1980′s, I found it extremely relatable. The almost 2 hour movie captures many pivotal moments I connected with as a Pakistani growing up in a western predominantly white society.

Javed is a Pakistani teenager who experiences racial and economic turmoil while living in Luton, England, in 1987. He writes poetry as a way to escape the intolerance of his hometown and the stubborn views of his traditional father. When a classmate introduces him to the music of Bruce Springsteen, Javed sees parallels between the singer's powerful lyrics and his own working-class environment. Springsteen's melodies soon inspire Javed to find his own voice and follow his dreams.
