Joomyeon frowned when glancing at Sunhee, who sat on the couch while distractedly doing something on her mobile phone. There was clearly something wrong between them, the atmosphere was heavy and he couldn’t look her in the eyes. Before he left for Italy, they had a small argument, but the chef really thought everything would be alright by the time he returned. “Are you really just going to sit there all day while I cook our lunch, mhm?”, his tone was casual, almost a playful attempt to break the ice. “Fine, I’ll leave.” Her harsh tone made the male raise an eyebrow, firstly taken by surprise. “Yah, Sunhee, I was kidding.”, he kept an eye on the boiling water in front of him, but raised his sight to see where she was going. “Come back here, stop being like this!”

She couldn’t even remember why their relationship became that awkward after being close to one another. They would spend a lot of time together, at her apartment, at his restaurant or go out for a walk, but then something happened that broke that special bond they had. Sunhee knew that whatever it was, made her feel really upset, to the point of not even answering his calls. But it was pointless to think about that after so long, he had gone to his trip and well, she had gotten over it. Her feelings toward him weren’t bad, but she felt rather uncomfortable around him, unlike before.

Not even a single word was said, Joonmyeon was focusing on cooking and Sunhee just played games on her phone. "How was your trip?” “How have you been?” She wanted to say so many things but none of it came out, it wasn’t good to ask such questions as if nothing happened, perhaps they had to talk about the misunderstanding between them. She was sure he was thinking about the same thing. But his attempt to break the ice, didn’t really help.

Her words were sharp and came out without her even realizing it, and when she noticed she was already on her way toward the door and she was clearly too stubborn to stop half way and turn back or to apologize for  being rude. “Come back here, stop being like this!” He had that sort of power over her to make her stop from whatever she wanted to do, no matter how hard she tried to avoid it. She rolled on her heels and walked inside the kitchen, stopping only when she was right in front of him, her face being completely blank and arms loosely crossed against her chest.

Quite honestly Soji did not believe the girl was pregnant, because if that was the case, she herself could have been in the same state ever since she’s recognized that she could eat for two at any given moment if she was properly starved. So really, how hypocrite would it be of her to assume such a thing? Very much so. Still the remark left her as a jest and she was laughing again as the girl started denying it, much like she thought she would. Not a lot of people just literally said yes to that question if they were known to be single, the reputation it’d gain them. Hell Soji wouldn’t happily say yes even if it as true because babies were a thing she was not ready for.

She wasn’t sure she’d ever be ready for them. “You never what?” That, she could guess what it was and it was with a small grin that she asked the question wanting her to finish it. Because trust Soji to want to embarrass and poke fun until the limit had been crossed and she had to retract herself a little bit and give some space to the other person. Because she herself? She had no limits whatsoever. She liked to think so at least. If she had some limits, she made sure to not show them was closer to the truth, but she’d never admit to it.

Most likely that she’d answer never had sex, which really shouldn’t be a thing to be embarrassed or hard to admit, nothing wrong with it if you asked her. Not that she regretted er decision from the first time until now, because sex was something she enjoyed, it was different each time and it was not a thing she was ashamed or sad to have discovered. “Well, you make me hungry too, eating like you do. If I ever wanted children, I’d want a little girl just like you.”

A light snort left her mouth, after hearing that question. She knew it would come, since it was something the older would always do. Sunhee was awkward and Soji knew what topics made her feel nervous. It was pretty dumb, if she thought about it because she had spoken about other things that could be considered more inappropiate for a normal chat. The other being pushy over her awkwardness was something she appreciated, because that meant, at some point, she would get over those feelings. 

❝ I never... Had sex. ❞ She exclaimed while cupping her hands around her mouth, the last few words coming out almost as a whisper. As if someone would hear them. Seoul was full of people minding their own business, mostly so early in the morning. If they did listen to the young women, they would just shrug it off and simply say “teenagers”. It had happened to her before. Soon after, she motioned with one of her hands for the other to take a seat on the chair across her own, with a wide, warm smile.

❝ Come on, eat something. ❞ The chopsticks resting on the table were taken by her slender fingers and like that, she started eating again. Sunhee smiling at the last few words said by the woman. She had heard that before, seems like people liked girls like her. That don’t do much, don’t go out to drink, are respectful and everthing else. She was what people labelled as “good”. ❝ I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to take care of a baby. I can barely take care of myself. ❞

Hana couldn’t help it. The words emit out of her lips effortlessly, giving a piece of her thought to another. One that she had to learn and understand the most difficult way possible, she didn’t want to think that. That ‘forever’ was an overused word that was created by someone who had faith in something. The way young lovers would tell their significant other during a moment of tranquility, when the setting was right. The brunette was like that, had that exact mindset that forever was something she could hold on to with someone she used to adore. It doesn’t last that long, it’s practically non-existent. The aroma of smoke surfaces the air, capturing it when her chest rises when she breathes it in contently.

When comforting others, it was never warm. People never wished for the comfort Hana gives to another because there was no point in doing things, saying words when they didn’t want to hear it but need to. Was she apologetic for being honest? Never. It was better than bottling it up, coiled around regret for not speaking any sooner than she should have. So she’s saying it now, speaking towards the latter who was right besides her. Elbow pressed against the cool railing she could barely feel due to the fitting long sleeve that hugged her petite frame.

That smile, fuck. Hana resembles a piece of herself in the way those lips stretched out, displaying no sincere emotions of happiness. Because she knows how painful it was, to deal with the pain from within and things that she wanted to keep for so long, eventually vanished. It’s a little terrifying to think about as well, knowing one day — sooner or later, things won’t be the same like the day before.

❝And that’s the sad thing about bein’ too close to people, because it’s bound to hurt to say goodbye. Right?❞ Then again, Hana doesn’t know which hurt more. Hearing it or never receiving it.

❝ That’s right. ❞ Sunhee pronounced briefly. She wanted to say so many things, but they all got stuck, making her feel like choking. It was a familiar feeling. Whenever she had to express her feelings or talk about anything to do with them, she would just feel absolutely nothing or everything at once, which would only end up on her crying. Alone. The constant feeling of emptiness was even more noticeable nowadays, she had no idea why but it was suffocating. And whenever she would try to talk about it with anyone, they would just answer with nice, sugarcoating words. 

“Everything will be okay.” She was told earlier. Bullshit. It’s not that easy, everyone always tried to make her believe that things do get better, only for her to end up seeing her feelings being stepped on and her hopes screwed over. Sunhee wasn’t gulible, she wasn’t stupid. And at some point, she started believing that she was cursed. Made only to hurt and mostly, to be hurt. Her life was basically that, to be a loner. “Loving others is beautiful, Sunhee.” Her mother said once, but the woman never said how horrible it was to know that, any time, she would have to forget about her loved ones. 

It was a curse and she was exhausted of hearing how life was a beautiful thing. And when those feelings would visit her, she would phone Hana. The young woman was the only one who would dare to tell her how full of shit people could be. And how crappy life can be at times. Sunhee loved that. It was hard to hear it sometimes, but it was true and it’s better than hearing sweet lies that end up destroying you.

 ❝ You know, sometimes I wish we could say sweet things to make each other feel good. ❞ A light snort left her mouth right after the last word was said. She looked at the immense view right in front of them and could only think about how the cars looked like stars, moving fast. If only she didn’t see the different colors and models of the vehicles, it would sure look like the night sky. That made her feel sorta peaceful.

Her eyes slowly moved from the screen of her cellphone to the man standing beside her. A soft chuckle leaving her mouth as her eyebrows raised in confusion, mixing a little with mischief which clearly showed up in her smirk. She hoped there weren’t bad intentions in his words other than entertaining himself in a way, and of course, the girl as well.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t expect to fall asleep-” A small yawn interrupted Miyuki and her hand quickly went up to cover her mouth. She could feel her face turning red, how could she have fallen asleep during the movie? It’s not that the movie was boring or anything, plus she didn’t want to seem uninterested. And of course she wouldn’t admit that she enjoyed sleep and could practically rest anywhere that called for it. A worried look fell on the woman’s face and she began to bite at her lip.

“That’s a relief then. I was worried that I’d slept through the whole movie or something!”

Sunhee couldn’t help but chuckle, reaching out her hand to rub the woman’s shoulder in a gentle, soothing way. It wasn’t a big deal, it happened to her as well, many times. The difference was that she would fall asleep in the most awkward moments possible, like on the bus, school or even waiting for the doctor to call out her name, but when you’re tired, you’re tired. There’s nothing you can do. Soon after she stood up from the couch, looking back at the woman while she pulled her shirt down a little since it had been rolled up for a little while, exposing her pale skin without her even realizing. Shit. She cursed in her mind after she noticed.

❝ Let’s get some coffee, come on! I should’ve offered it earlier. ❞ Her hands reached to take the other’s, slightly tugging her up to then begin to walk toward the kitchen of the apartment.
