The river lay before them in a broad and trembling sheet, catching the fading light as though it were some fragile veil stretched between the waking world and that of dreams. They crossed it in silence, the current pressing coldly against their limbs, as if reluctant to yield passage to their intent. Liz swam ahead, cutting quietly through the sunlit water, while Mary followed a little later behind her, closing the distance at an unhurried pace. Upon the opposite shore stood a solitary stone, dark and worn smooth by the ceaseless caress of water and time. It rose from the bank like some ancient witness, indifferent yet solemn, receiving them as they arrived, breathless and altered by the exertion of their passage. Liz steadied herself upon it first, drawing herself upright with an air of composed resolve. She turned then, and saw Mary approaching, her countenance softened by fatigue and something nearer to amusement. "Took you long enough, sweetheart," Liz said with a faint, playful smirk. "Someone had to admire the view on the way..." Liz rolled her eyes. "All that staring... I bet you were imagining things..." Mary’s lips curved faintly. "Oh, I was. You mostly..." Liz swum nearer, until the space between them seemed too narrow for either retreat or concealment. "Then stop imagining. Show me..." At this, Mary did not avert her gaze, though something within her seemed to falter, as if the arousal she had long guarded was suddenly rendered certain. She did not answer in words. Instead, she lifted her hand, hesitating only a moment before letting her fingers rest lightly against Liz’s face, as though the gesture itself required courage. The world about them appeared to recede—the river’s murmur, the distant wind—until there remained only the stillness between two loving hearts. And then Mary leaned in and kissed her. It was not a gesture of haste, nor of triumph, but of quiet surrender—brief, trembling, yet sincere, as though something long restrained had finally found its gentlest expression.
