The thing that sums up my issue with Spider in the Avatar movies is that he repeatedly inserts himself in a culture that does not want him there. Playing with the Sully kids is one thing because playing with the kids around your age is understandable. Except the Na'vi haven't adopted him and while they aren't usually outwardly cruel (with the exception of Neytiri on occasion), they obviously don't like the kid hanging around so much. Spider is that kid that stays way past his welcome and invites himself to family functions, you know?

Which is why it bothers me that he basically cosplays as Na'vi. He paints his skin and makes a loincloth that is supposed to look Na'vi but really isn't. The people at the lab raised him and I have no doubt that he has human looking clothes and he doesn't wear them. It really gives 'white kid who wears feathers and a costume to the powwow'. Being friends with someone from a specific culture doesn't entitle you to be a part of that culture especially when the adults of that culture don't want you there. Even Jake, who is the most sympathetic to Spider, doesn't really seem to like him that much and initially describes him as a 'stray cat' who sticks to his kids. He cares that the Sky People having Spider puts his family in danger and makes his kids upset. You can't really blame him for not putting his children in danger for a child who isn't his. No Na'vi adopted Spider. While harsh in the moment, Neytiri saying that Spider isn't a part of her family is not wrong. He's not. You can't blame the kid for who he's related to or how he was born, but the way he acts is the bit that bothers me.

lqg being protective of his disciples is so funny to me. like ofc he can hit them, hes their shizun, but god forbid someone else touch a hair on their head. those are his babies brats, hes the only one allowed to beat them to a pulp when theyre annoying, the rest of you can suck it up or fuck off.

lqg does not play abt his brats. the brats in question are stunned by such fierce displays of affection (the little ones anyway, the big ones barely bat an eye to their shizun's odd behavior)

Post canon Toph who doesn’t want to go back to her shitty parents so she just decides to stay in the Fire Nation and bum off Zuko’s hospitality.

Zuko’s like no, yeah, I totally get it, and just makes her one of his advisors. At first it’s just so she has a good excuse to stay but after the first meeting Toph storms out shouting about how EVERYONE was lying why would you even need to lie about what kind of tea you want??

considering dragon/rider pairs that obviously trust and love each other and express it through their body language

you can tell how long someone’s been a dragon rider based on how they interact with their dragon. the new riders are always kind of anxious and hesitant around theirs, and if they pet them it’s in the nervous, shaky way someone pets a dog they don’t know that might be a bite risk

riders who’ve been doing it for a while act totally different. they’ll jump on their dragons, smack them around a little bit, pet them really aggressively, and in turn they’ll let their dragon playfully knock them down with a snout, a paw, of a tail, or jump on them and put a ridiculous amount of weight on their shoulders, or climb on top of them and cover them in love bites

you can often find an experienced rider sitting somewhere with a dragon’s head on their lap or draped over one shoulder, purring happily as they watch whatever their rider is doing
