What is mental illness anyways?
So you're curious to find out what mental illness is? Great question! Some people think it's sadness or over anxious. Some think it’s multiple personalities. Some think it’s a choice of behaviour. The truth is, it is all of that and much more. To try to understand what it is, you must first classify it in your mind as an illness; a disease. Like diabetes, heart disease, asthma and so on. In comparison to self infliction diseases, many people and mainstream media think mental illness is self inflicted or even desired or simply a choice one made. That can be true but is more often not. Think of a person with Type 1 diabetes and type 2. Type 1 is organic. Something you were most likely born with. Type 2 is self inflicted. Many years of poor diet, obesity, lack of exercise even eating too much sugar! Although medically, diabetes can be self inflicted, you can’t just tell someone “give your head a shake and get over it”. Either uncontrolled types of diabetes can result in serious health issues and even death. There is no grand typing of mental illness but left untreated, uncontrolled, can lead to serious health issues and even death.
