Back to Basics for Men

Whether you are a fashion follower or someone who is seeking to reinvent their wardrobe, every man should have the basics of fashion for survival.

Yet many  believe that the principle of ‘essential’ should be left out in a fashion context afterall apart from air, sleep and water nothing is essential. Right?

Wrong - Below are not only essentials for your wardrobe but items that will help you on your way to achieving more of a styled look.

Our list is generally appropriate for all ages and tastes, they are not flashy and they are not trendy but rock solid, versatile basics.

Plain Tees

This may sound like a no brainer, but you would be surprised the amount of men that don’t own a reasonable selection of tees (aka T-Shirts). Tees are a throw on piece that you don’t need to think about and they enrich any look instantly, just by being unfussy and timeless.

We suggest you buy multiples of the basic white, grey, black and navy. Our personal choice of brand would be Gap and American Apparel. It’s worth investing a bit extra on tees so they don’t shrink or distort over time – definitely ‘quality over quantity’. Not to mention the fact that tees can be dressed up or down depending on the accessories and other items worn with them.

Oxford Cloth Button Down Shirt

A definite favourite among our stylists is the Oxford Cloth Button Down shirt or abbreviated as OCBD shirt.

This piece of clothing skips along the divide of formal and casual just perfectly. The OCBD shirts are without doubt a valuable addition to any modern wardrobe and you will certainly get a lot of use out of them.

Buy a couple of them in white and blue as they pretty much go with anything. Popular brands for OCBD shirts are; Gap, ASOS, Uniqlo, Reiss and Allsaints. But if you opt for more premium OCBD shirts we suggest looking at American Brands such as: Ralph Lauren, J.Crew and Gant Rugger.   

Slim-Fit Indigo Denim

Completely timeless and classic, the indigo slim-fitted jeans will be one of the most versatile item of clothing that you’ll ever own.

They are really easy to dress up or down, most brands offer a choice of cuts so it is entirely up to you and your body shape how ‘slim’ you decide to go. Choosing the right cut of jeans will ensure sharper lines and a better shape. Indigo denim works with almost any style you can think of and it is doubtful it will go out of fashion anytime soon. So it’s worth spending a bit extra for higher quality, which is guaranteed to last longer.

If you’re more on a budget we have always found that H&M denim performs pretty well. But denim specialist such as Levi’s, Diesel, A.P.C, Nudie and Acne won’t let you down.

  Desert Boots

Perhaps the most perfect beginner’s shoes, they make the transition from the youthful trainers to something more grown-up and effortless. Desert boots are smart without being formal; they work with everything from jeans to shorts. It’s all about how you dress them.

They are unbelievably comfortable and if you decide to go for the iconic Clark’s Originals it’s an investment worthwhile for the long run.

We suggest getting a pair in stone suede or light sand as they will complement almost every piece in your existing wardrobe. However if you’re looking for something more hardwearing or season-appropriate you can always opt for the brown leather desert boots.

Clarks would be our first brand of suggestion, simply because they are the creators of the desert boot. £79 isn’t unreasonable as you would be getting quality and style that comes standard like every other Clarks Originals.

For a cheaper alternative, desert boots can be found at River Island, ASOS and office. Whereas brands like Kurt Geiger, Tod’s No_Code, Aldo and Red Wing produces some seriously sought-after styles at a higher premium.

Basic Knitwear

Basic knitwear is more of an essential component during the autumn and winter season for layering in the colder weather.

A couple of mid-weight wool, cotton jumpers or crew necks in navy, grey or oatmeal would be the perfect starting point for your wardrobe. These primary colours will give you the freedom to play around with bolder shades within the rest of your ensemble and the mid weight ensures that they rest on the more subtle side of the spectrum which is more desirable when you’re just starting out.

We suggest keeping an eye out for good natural fibre content at brands such as; Uniqlo, Marks and Spencer, Reiss and H&M.

Shaw Collar Cardigans

The Shaw Collar Cardigans is an extension to your basic knitwear and can be worn as your second or even third layer to your outfits.

The structured character of the cardigan can really help to dress up your overall aesthetic. We suggest try pairing with your OCBD, jeans and desert boots.

Sweatshirts

Sweatshirts have made a real revival in popularity over the past year or so. Especially accompanying the sportswear (baseball jersey) trend, that has come into full force.

However you may be thinking this choice of clothing is a surplus after forming a solid wardrobe base, particularly when you have already accumulated a selection of basic knitwear. Nevertheless for truly casual layering there is nothing better than a sweatshirt.

We suggest layering your sweatshirt over your OCBD shirt or even an under layer to a chunky cardigan or denim jacket to your sweatshirt the bottom layer. Topman, Uniqlo and H&M all stock a variety of plain or printed sweatshirt, whilst premium brands such as Norse Projects, A.P.C and Carhartt offer higher quality version of longer –lasting sweatshirts.

Check Shirts

A more casual alternative the oxford cloth button down shirt is the check shirt. These are a considered choice during the winter season, whether it’s under a jumper or over a t-shirt.

We suggest looking for the larger checks for the more casual look. However in terms of colour palette it’s really up to your own preferences. Almost all high street stores such as Topman, Uniqlo, Allsaints, H&M and more will offer a vast selection of check shirts.

It’s always important to get to know the client's needs and set session expectations - says Tanja.

“First of all we email the client a list of style questions to assist me in preparing for the booking. I usually follow up with a phone call.

During the call we would go through their goals for the session. It is the perfect opportunity get to know their personality and style better.

Afterwards, I edit best stores for the client and map a journey to ensure time is not wasted in going to stores that are not suitable.

On the day of our session I pull the most suitable looks from each store and get them ready for the client to try on, this means unbuttoning the shirts, zips etc anything that will assist the client in getting changed quicker and with ease.

It’s my job to ensure all the items of clothing, accessories and shoes fit well, get appropriate sizes and explain to each client why the ensemble works or not so he can learn as we are shopping. Once the selection has been made we move onto the next store.

Within the last 30 min of the session I ask the client what they would like to finish off the session with. Is there anything we haven't covered? Also I always ask them if they have any questions or need more advice on any of the looks we have purchased.

 I finish the session with any feedback and assist the client with any bags to their car or the tube etc.

Afterwards I love to follow up with a client either with an email or phone call to ensure they are happy with their session and cover any questions they may still have

The Hottest Trend for Spring 2014

Animal print fans, it’s time to get up and party because animal print has never been hotter!

London Fashion Week SS14 gave the thumbs up to leopard print, snake print, zebra – you name it, whether it was the celebrities or designers, animal print was everywhere.

According to Be Styled UK Executive Stylist Tanja for this spring/summer you must have at least one item with animal print.

You can’t go wrong wearing animal print this season. It is easy to spice up your look with shoes or a handbag with this trend.

This trend is oldest one on earth, which humanity wears. From the Stone Age men and women were wearing animal print clothes; actually it was real fur and real animal skin.

We are in better luck these days, we don’t need to hunt and kill for stylish and fashionable looks. 

How to wear animal print:

Keep it simple. If you do wear bold animal print you may choose to tone-down accessories to keep the style glamorous instead of over the top. The print itself draws the eye anything extra will visually fight with the pattern. 

We don’t recommend you to wear two big clothing items with animal prints, we do advise however that you to wear printed boots and a handbag.

 Animal prints are usually very busy and charged so as we said earlier; make sure you tone them down with soft or neutral colors.

Please don’t mix a leopard print with a zebra print or any two different prints. That will make you look like an animal in the zoo.

Exercise In Style And Get Fitter For 2014

With 2014 here, it’s time to get back to the gym. The festive season has long gone; you want to do it, so why are you still struggling to get motivated? We know excuses are your worst enemy, but oh we think of such good ones!

Don’t worry we are here to help! Read these tips and have an easy transition from sleepy to active. It’s time to wake up!

Come on let’s be serious, the gym can be an intimidating place with so many buff, sweaty bodies. We’d be lying if we didn’t say we never wore mascara or lipstick before lacing up. But hitting the gym shouldn’t make you fret. It should make you feel good. Getting some trendy workout clothes that fit your body will make you feel more confident and encourage you to break a sweat.

Here’s our selection of the best fitness gear that’s not only hardworking and high performance, but super stylish too.

With this super stylish and comfy leggings look it shouldn’t be a problem to stretch and warm-up before a workout.

Tip 1: Don’t forget to warm up and stretch before a workout - this is very important! You don’t want to pull a muscle or hurt yourself (second best excuse for not going back!). It also helps to exercise for longer and to a better standard.   

“But I hate the gym”, I hear you say! No problem, there are other ways to exercise.

Tip 2: If you have a Wii, consider getting exercise themed games such as Just Dance, Wii fit and Wii Sports. Just don’t forget to change your clothes into something more comfy like this.

Tip 3: Even short low-impact intervals of exercise can act as a powerful tool to supercharge your health. Walk a dog, sweep and weed your sidewalk, return mail or small parcels to your neighbors.

Tip 4: If you work on 8th floor, don’t take the lift, just use stairs.  Start by taking the lift to the 4th floor and walking from there then work your down slowly until you are walking from the ground floor!

Tip 5: Ditch the Car - You could bike to a park, head it to the library, or plan to meet friends at a halfway location to which you can both walk. Believe me your body will thank you in many ways.

Not all exercise has to be boring; just about everyone can find a physical activity they enjoy. To get you in the mood for these activities dress up appropriately and do things that you like the most. Did we mention shopping is a good exercise (at least that’s what we tell ourselves in the Be Styled UK office)!

Remember regular exercise is a powerful thing that can significantly reduce fatigue and make you feel much more energetic. If you’re feeling tired, try taking a brisk walk or dancing to your favorite music and see how much better you feel afterwards. Don’t forget to eat appropriately. I am afraid the fast and junky food is no longer an option.
