Timeline: Viral Interventions:

Ordered supplies, which got delivered Friday, April 11th. Monday, April 14th, we customized the shirts and figured out what day we were going to meet up. We meet up on Thursday, April 17th, to display our phrase and capture documentation. From Friday 18th- Sunday 20th, we all collaborated in the stylistic choice of our video and of our social media presence.

Task List: Viral Intervention:

For the task list, we had decided that we were all going to equally collaborate in the shirt-making process. We first must purchase the materials to make the shirts. Then we cut each letter out of the pack to lay on top of the shirts and create our phrase. Second, we would iron on the shirts to stick the letters. Third, we would each customize the shirts to our liking. Fourth, we would carpool in Danielle's car to go to the beach. Fifth, we go to the beach and display our shirts while holding hands. Sixth, have a friend or one of the group take turns to video our intervention.

My group and I decided to shorten our sentence to: "They are swindling away our rights," and place this on a white t-shirt. In order to have the sentence truly leap out into the vision of the public we decided to choose red letters. We would first purchase the white shirts and the iron-on letters, and then we would each customize our shirts, all while having our sentence in the front. We had also discussed having some of us with the sentence translated in Spanish. Having our shirts ready to wear, we would then go to the beach and visually confront the public by holding hands and maneuvering through the crowded beach. This is a peaceful way of grabbing people's attention.

3 Proposal for Viral Intervention:

For the first proposal, my group and I had the idea of placing our sentence ( these new "protections" are not accidental, but instead they are providing uncertainty by swindling away our rights ). We would then parade around and display our shirts in a very public and busy setting, like the beach. Our second proposal consists of making a puzzle with our sentence on it and having random people interact by completing the puzzle and reading our sentence. This would have them engaged, and we would be able to speak to them about our intentions. The third proposal consists of purchasing bottled water and printing out our sentence as a label and adding it to the water bottle so that we can give them away to people.

" I really took time off and tried to figure out what it might mean to call myself an artist."

I selected this quote because it really spoke out to me as an artist. The more that I integrate myself into this environment, the more I understand how complicated and confusing it is to find where you belong and who you are. As the semesters go by and I speak with my peers about what their aspirations are, I realize that this is a common occurrence. Most of us are experimenting and learning as we go. When I first chose art as a career, I believed that I was going to lean towards realism, landscapes, and still lifes. The more I get to participate in my classes, the more I realize that I love abstract art and sculpture pieces. The act of experimenting with different materials and surprising myself with the outcome reassures me of my love for art. This is why I truly believe that it is essential to take time off to ask ourselves what it is that we want out of art and out of being an artist. Do we want to express our inner feelings? Do we want to depict the world through our experiences? Do we want to highlight sociopolitical events? There are so many more questions that we must ask ourselves to understand who we are as an artists and what we aim to achieve.

When figuring out the type of artists that you are and the type of artist that you want to develop in, how important is it to draw inspiration from the world around, and what does that process look like to you? I believe we all have different approaches to this, and I believe it is interesting to step aside from our perspective and engage in a third-person perspective.

Final Documentation of Viral Intervention:

The video you see here is a display of our experiences, showing the phrase "They are swindling away our rights" in a public setting. We chose the beach as the setting for our project because we felt that we would stand out with our very white shirts with red letters and our jeans. As we got to the beach, we decided that the best way to carry out our message was to hold hands as we maneuvered around the crowded shoreline. This caused attention, and we had people taking pictures of us and videos. We had two women speak to us and ask us what we were doing. They were very kind and thanked us for bringing awareness of the current political state of this country. As we navigated around the people at the beach, I felt a sense of pride. I felt comfortable with the message we were displaying, and the act of holding hands brought a sense of community and strength that encouraged me to keep going. Once we left the shore, we decided to parade around a crowded area that hosts restaurants with outdoor seating. As we were walking, I made sure to force people to have eye contact with me, which was effective in getting more people to read our shirts. As we walked, we got an abundance of stares, and we got a couple of thumbs up. That is when we had our second verbal interaction with a lovely couple. They applauded us for our bravery in standing up for what we believe, and they asked us what rights were being taken from us. This gave us the opportunity to speak to them about immigration, women's rights, gay and queer rights, voting rights, and etc. Overall, we had a very positive experience on our outing. This has encouraged me to further speak about the injustices that have been raining on us since the start of the current administration. This has also encouraged me to keep promoting the importance of informing ourselves and staying aware of what is currently happening, regardless of how exhausting it is.

This collaborative video features a "poster" with the words: These new "protections" are not accidental but instead they are providing uncertainty by swindling away our rights. These words are meant to highlight the political uncertainty that is happening in our country and the war against freedom of speech, education, women's bodies, immigrants, etc. We are continuously receiving terrible news about how this current government is dismantling systems that benefit its citizens. It is exhausting to live in this country, yet in order to prevent more harm from happening we must maintain our eyes open and our brains educated.

Installation Final: "Wonder for the sake of it"

For this project, I decided to express wonder and the necessity of overcoming my fear of aging. Every single year around my birthday I feel a wave of dread and sadness. The weight of aging and the constant piling of pressure and responsibilities make me overwhelmed and anxious. I rarely let myself celebrate or feel happy for growing a year older. This year, however, I have been taking it one day at a time and trying to implement the sense of wonder for everything in my life. My installation consists of inconsistently stacked boxes wrapped in fabric to mimic a canvas. On the "canvas," you can see a thick paint freely and abstractly depicting brushstrokes and marks. This piece also consists of thin fabric "flowing" out of the boxes. This fabric is meant to mimic the flow of paint. I intended to showcase my love for abstract art and how it lets me forget about who I am and instead provides an escape to the world of the unknown and undefined. There is no pressure in this world and art can exist just for the sake of it as can I.
