Freshman 15 Anyone?
According to an article on MailOnline, the average first year student at a university gains between 14 and 28 pounds. Apparently the freshman 15 is real! Not only that, but the survey conducted found that a portion of these students will gain up to 70 pounds by the time they graduate. The survey asked the tops reasons why students believe that this is the case. The number one answer was stress.
This makes sense because of the effects of stress, both physical and psychological. When under large amounts of stress, many people resort to eating unhealthy foods as a way to make themselves feel better. Caffeine and alcohol are also common ways to "self medicate." Given that most first year students will live on campus, they are also most likely subject to whatever their dorm cafeteria has to offer. While many campuses do offer a variety of healthy foods, a select few will opt for a salad and water when they are facing a stressful week.
To avoid giving in the temptations when stress hits, the counseling services at Virginia Commonwealth University offer a few helpful tips. One is to eat breakfast. It's not called the most important meal of the day for nothing. Starting out the day with a healthy meal will give you energy to face the stressors of the day. Also, cut back on caffeine and try drinking more water. Water can help to keep you feeling fuller longer and avoiding less healthy foods and beverages. Finally, if you feel the need to snack, reach for healthy crunchy foods such as carrots or almonds. These will give your body the nutrients it needs, while also curbing your craving better than a cookie would have.
I have also said multiple times that exercise is a great way to put a damper on stress. Exercising releases neurotransmitters in the brain that will help you feel more relaxed and generally in a better mood. When I feel a stress craving coming, I'll go for a walk or a run first and then decide whether I'm really hungry or not. More often than not, it was the stress telling me to eat, and not my stomach. Try these tricks and more during finals week and see if your stress levels decline!
