so sorry for the absence over here my darlings !! however, opal is very much a muse that comes and goes, and while i am bY NO MEANS dropping her, most of my time and creative energy has been on my main, and a newer muse -- i will return, but i can't properly say when. but keep on being awesome you guys !! xoxoxo.
alrighty, so i’m getting ready for the next semester, and, normally, this wouldn’t require any sort of announcement cause school, y’know, it just happens, BUT, this semester is a little different. i’m going to be studying abroad, living in london, for about three and a half months. my flight is next wednesday, so i’m going to be trying to queue my drafts for that first week, since i have no idea what my schedule is going to be like.
i will most definitely be online during this time/the semester, but my time will probably be reduced somewhat ( mostly the evenings of weekdays, i’d suspect ), and i’ll be in a different time zone, as well. just wanted to let everyone know of the wee bit of changes in activity that are bound to happen !! xoxoxo.
modern opal questioning the twins’ life choices and their night time dj life but helps them keep it on the dl and is supportive while also trying to parent them and being an altogether big sister-y big sister.
verses page has been updated with two post-book four thingamajiggers, just in case anyone was interested. i still need to type up definite descriptions/headcanons about things, but, the short little descriptions will work for now.
noegenesis & ostentiferous !!
meme thingie.
noegenesis ; are there any topics that they love to think about deeply ?
opal is fond of analyzing and discussing books. she's read a great many books and studied a great many topics ( none at incredible depth ), but if you bring up one book that she particularly liked, she'll discuss it with you for hours. whether its a novel, or a biography, or even a scientific field manual that baatar, jr. had insisted she read, if she liked it, she'll definitely have spent a good amount of time mulling it over in her brain.
ostentiferous ; what's the unluckiest thing that's ever happened to them ?
she would say something like 'tripping and knocking a few baby teeth out when i was five', or something along those lines. she doesn't really believe in luck or coincidence. opal has been raised to believe that you get out of life what you put into it ; sometimes bad things happen, but it's not a random allotment of bad days, and it's not you being in the wrong place at the wrong time. she believes that there's no such thing as a charmed life. bad things happen to bad and good people alike, and the only thing you can do is, well, do your best to fix whatever 'unlucky' thing has come your way. calling something unlucky and then dismissing it is lazy, in her opinion.
baLLROOM DANCING // b ALL AU
A gala ; when was the last time she attended one of those ? The great hall is littered with people from all over the Earth Nation and the United Republic, the Fire Nation and Water Tribes, all her parents’ friends and allies. Everyone is dressed in their finest, tables of food stretching in every direction, and the Beifong colors, deep green and silken cream, hang from every available column and balcony. It’s a celebration ; Zaofu has been rebuilt, stronger and better than before. It’s been two years since Kuvira’s surrender, and the Earth Kingdom —— er, Confederation, has just experienced it’s first election.
She’s just excused herself from a small knot of people whose conversation is, while interesting, filled with things she’d rather not have to deal with at a party, even one as prestigious as this. Her mother and father are discussing railway security and trade with Fire Lord Izumi and General Iroh ; since Opal had paid her respects at the start of the discussion, she decides her talents might be put to better use elsewhere.
Spotting Bolin returning from his mission to wrangle them both a drink from a server, she grins and trots up to him, tired of small talk and tired of standing. Dinner won’t be served for another hour or two ( that’s how these sorts of things work ), and the band is striking up another tune. She’s been admiring the happy couples on the dance floor all evening, twirling this way and that, swaying to and fro, enjoying the movement and the music.
He takes the final steps, closing the gap between them, and begins to launch into some sort of half-apology half-explanation. She stops his lips with a quick kiss and takes the glasses from his hands, placing them on the empty tray of a server as he passes by. She can tell Bolin is a little put out by it ( she’s just relinquished his hard won glass of champagne before he got a single sip ), but she threads her arm through his and begins to lead him towards the dance floor.
❝ Don’t worry, there’ll still be plenty to drink after you dance with me. Besides, we can’t let all those people out there have all the fun. We need to show them how it’s done… ❞
She can feel him get a little stiff under the impending trial by dance, but she has complete and utter faith in him. He’s much better than he realizes. One of the first dates he’d taken her on in Republic City had been dancing, and, while that had been an extremely different sort of music genre and a vastly disparate set of movements ( the jazz of the young in the city can’t exactly be compared to the stately dances of a high society function like this ), she knows that he’ll be up to the task. Their bending has prepared them well for moments such as these, because what is bending other than a dance with the elements as your partner ? For the record, she likes partnering with her boyfriend much more than a gust of wind.
Then, they’re out on the floor and she’s guiding his hands to their proper places, one clasped with hers and one at her waist.
❝ Relax, I haven’t done this in a while either, so if we fail, we’ll fail in style. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Would you ? ❞
And they’re off, spinning along with the rest, keeping time to the rhythm and meter of the song. She’s glad that she has someone to dance with, and, for what it’s worth, wouldn’t trade this for anything. Even when he steps on her foot, she laughs and steps on his just for fun. It’s been a long road to this point, but she’s had him as a partner all this time, and she isn’t ready to let him go. Not now. Not ever.
More Bolin and with colours!
' it was my fault ... it was all my fault !! '
angst tbh.
there’s not much that korra can do except for stay. kneel in the dust and tree roots beside the desolate beifong, wrap arms made to cradle around shoulders that should not have to shudder under a load so heavy as the one opal has burdened herself with, and remain until the weeping stops.
’ none of this was your fault, opal. i can promise you that. ‘
they’d suspected, of course, that kuvira’s regime was corrupt even beyond the blatantly obvious flaws it held. labour camps and purges are phrases that bolin had murmured to her in a dark, quiet moment after his return to the city a few weeks ago, but terrible though their implications had been, nobody had known the entire truth of what had been going on under the quash of the great uniter’s ruling thumb until now.
they’ve found thousands crowded into tight spaces and spartan prisons, bones brittle and bodies worn. men, women, children, those deemed as threats or traitors of the empire — if they were strong, they were made to work, and if not, they were punished. the unity brought by kuvira’s campaign was at a cost too large, and as the avatar and her companions advance further into the heart of the dismantling empire, the desolation only mounts. there were valid successes to kuvira’s movement, yes, and the world that they are all uncovering is not wholly corrupt. but the ex-leader is being tried for war crimes with utterly valid reason, and for all that many have gone fed, defended, and liberated, just as many have starved, have been beaten down, have been wronged.
( they saw a young woman today, fire nation descent, a year or two older than herself and opal. there was a rattle to her lungs that’s going to require more careful, extensive treatment, a tremble to her very bones born of severe malnourishment, and as limbs were exposed, lacerations and bruises bloomed ever darker. it was when the woman carefully teased off a worn shoe to reveal three mangled toes and a caved in foot — an injury gained in manufacturing mechs, left untreated, not one that any healer or doctor will be able to fix — that korra found herself gaping, and even the airbender at her shoulder was wordless.
a beat, a swallow, a lump in her throat, and eventually korra had managed to ask how she’d been left in such a state for so very long. the reply ? she’d been known for being difficult, vocal in her hatred for her captors, and suffering her injury had been deemed a suitable punishment for previous behaviours. it’s how she got most of her other wounds, too, running that mouth. but she’s alive, and she can still walk, even if her foot isn’t pretty, and hey — the avatar and her airbenders are here now, right ? so it isn’t all a tragedy. it was then that korra had started to cry, tears mindlessly falling, darkening her cheeks as apologies stumbled out of her, and healing hands halted in their work to wind around the other woman and cling.
opal had retained her composure a little longer at least, but korra hadn’t missed when the young beifong had disappeared from her company, and it isn’t hard to imagine why these discoveries would trouble opal. the woman who had ordered ( or at least enabled ) these cruelties had once been family. there was a brother who had aided them similarly. these are the kinds of tortures that, while not exactly matching those inflicted on the imprisoned beifongs, had been dealt to them similarly during their captivity. aside from that, opal is simply compassionate, and it’s the most admirable quality in action, but one of the most agonising for its possessor. )
korra can’t make this better. she can’t give that young woman her foot back. she can’t go back in time and save zaofu before the beifongs would ever have to suffer. korra can’t bring back all the countless dead, injured and scarred who this war and regime have made. she can’t even make opal stop crying. but she can stay, she can stay and try to do as much as she can toward fixing things, so with arms still tight around the slighter woman’s shoulders and her concern focused utterly on opal, that’s exactly what korra continues. it’s not enough, but maybe it might somehow help.
’ blame kuvira. spirits, blame me. but these aren’t your wrongs, and they’re not on your head to fix. none of this is your fault. you’ve only ever helped. ‘
EDIT:
( wei ) ;;
❝ because i’m your favourite brother and you tell me everything. ❞
❝ I never remember saying that you were my favorite brother. And, for the record, if anyone's my favorite brother right now, it's Huan. He finished his latest sculpture this morning and told me it was 'based off the effects of my positive energy on his soul'. And it was very pretty. So, how are you going to top that ? If you can think of something better than that, I might tell you my secret. ❞
( baatar, jr. ) ;;
❛ Do not hesitate, for it will be the cause of your downfall. Keep this in mind; the more you hesitate then the faster chance will pass you by——
—now keep going from where you left off, even if you slip up do not stop. When you complete this last verse we can start over and try it once more from the top if you’d like. Considering this is a rather difficult piece to master, you are doing very well. ❜
( Baby sister )
She bites her lip and once again mounts the instrument upon her shoulder. This is much harder than she had anticipated. And it doesn't help that she had promised Baatar she would practice and had, instead, got caught up in a new book. And she had, subsequently, forgotten to pick up anything even related to music for three days. She tries again, starting where she left off, as per his instruction, and, albeit a very weak rendition of the notes upon the page, finishes off the last verse.
❝ That didn't sound as good as I had hoped it would ...... Why don't you play it again ? So I can hear how it sounds ? Besides, you're much better than I am. ❞

there aren’t any words to truly describe how happy he was to see her. even in a situation like this, he’s still filled with such unfathomable relief at the sight of her.
wei beifong is a family man at heart, and he always will be.
❝ no, no. that’s fine. ❞
he still keeps his head pressed by hers, basking in her warmth and comfort. he’s always meshed well wish opal ( he gets along with all his siblings minus the one, but with her, there seems to be a special connection ), and he wouldn’t want any- one else by his side at the moment.
❝ … how are they? i know huan was pretty shaken up by the whole thing. ❞
Snuggling up to his side, she slips her arm under his and sighs, leaning on him and garnering as much comfort from him as he is from her. It hasn't been easy for any of them ; the adjusting to freedom has taken as much toll as the captivity, it would seem. Her father didn't fare well under guard, and, while her mother is as strong a person as any, she's been through an ordeal. Opal's had to be the strong one, for her brothers, and her parents, too. Aunt Lin has never been a very comforting person, so it's been up to Opal to help everyone settle in to Republic City while their home is under enemy control.
❝ They're doing as well as can be expected. But they aren't the only ones I'm worried about. Dad and Huan have Mom, Mom has Aunt Lin, but who do you have ? I'm guessing Wing hasn't been doing well in the 'helping' department. ❞
