Entertainment Business: Program Reflection
Mastery
There couldn’t have been a better choice to begin a masters program off with then a course on mastery. The literary work Mastery, by American author Robert Greene, was the best choice of text to study. I was always taught in order to be a great leader, you have to have been a great follower. Mastery went deep into analyzing the life of some of the world’s greatest historical figures like Charles Darwin, Einstein, and Mozart.
Mastery gave me examples of pathways to success through the lives of some of the greatest people in history. Those examples gave me reason to question and analyze myself. This course also gave me something that will stick with me through life, a pathway to power. This pathway opened my eyes to ways to discipline the way I think and ways to handle different type of people in the world. I’ve learned my strengths as well as my weaknesses in order master oneself.
Executive Leadership
This course gave me the qualities I would need in order to be an executive in the entertainment business industry. It gave me the break down of different leadership styles allowing me to better understand the style of leadership that I have. It assisted me with decision-making skills, and how to manage people to achieve a business goal.
The key to executive leadership is not having just one style of leadership. You have to understand that not all situations call for the same leadership style. Deprnding on the phase the business is in will depend on the style needed. In the beginning phase the authoritative is called for due to the lack of knowledge of the job the employees may have. This style should sometime change and if not, you could find the morale of your employees decreasing. Participative is my favorite and allows employees to feel important due to you taking their opinions in consideration, and implementing them. The delegative style takes some of the responsibility off the leader and puts some on the employees, who are now knowledgeable enough to carry out task responsibly. Knowing when to apply each style is very important.
Project & Team Management
Project and team management is very important in any field that a student may pursue. This course focuses on creating a project management plan, correctly ordering tasks, and understanding and considering all factors that contribute to a successful project. It also focuses on factors of team management and creating a productive team.
In order to carry out a successful project, two of the most important things is knowing your team and time management. Assignments like the team building activity, and the project timeline activity was very essential to our growth. The team building activity improved your skills on creating a project, discovering the talents & skills of each team member, and assigning those team members to a certain task to complete the project successfully. The timeline activity introduced us to different time management tools to be sure we stayed on time with each phase of our project, and within our budget.
Business Storytelling and Brand Development
Brand development has always been one of my interests. With this course I gained the knowledge of different brand development strategies, and also how to use storytelling principles to strengthen a business and deliver a superior customer experience.
During this course I was able to complete a brand audit, which helped me develop my own personal brand identity. Studying the uniqueness of some our most popular brand logos has helped me open my mind when comes to creating a logo from a company. One of my favorites is Amazon.com’s logo with the arrow leading from a to z or how Nike is known for some of the best shoes, but commercials never focus on the product itself. I never really paid it any of these things any mind, since this course I can’t look at the world the same.
Entertainment Business Finance
This may have been one of the best classes I’ve had this year. We focused on the financial decisions and issues facing the entertainment industry professional. Evaluating entertainment business opportunities, and learning how to raise money to fund an entertainment company or a project was very vital to my career. During this course I developed financial projections that included startup funds and pro forma income statements.
Reading Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. Kiyosaki was the best thing that I could have ever experienced financially. Rich Dad Poor Dad helped me with my personal financing and taught me the difference between an asset and a liability. I have to say before taking this course my decision making when it came to financing was not really up to par. I feel every person in what ever industry it may be needs a course that combines financial decision making, financial planning, capital management, operations expense management and personal finance to be successful.
Negotiation and Deal Making
In order to enhance a company’s product development, establish a strong business presence, and successfully grow a company, negotiation and deal making skills are very important. This course not only taught me better negotiation skills, but it taught me how to prepare for a negotiation. It involved studying deal memos and contracts.
The best part of this class was role-playing with other classmates. This gave you an opportunity to have a real world experience negotiating. There were two things that helped me become a better negotiator; knowing how to separate the people, and using objective criteria. Autonomy, appreciation, affiliation, role, and their status are five core concerns that drive emotions during negotiations. I had to learn how to put myself in the others position. Also having objective criteria can result in a negotiation being fair. It gives reason to the other party of why you’ve set the standards the way you did.
Product and Artist Management
This course focused on management issues and scenarios that applied to artist management. It helped with problem solving and ways to resolve different issues in artist management. Not only did it teach us how to analyze the artist, but it also required the student to do a SWOT analysis on them as the manager.
Analyzing the artist and yourself, allows you to turn each one of you all’s weaknesses into strengths. I definitely have a new way of presenting a new product now. I’ve learned that people are more motivated about why you do something, rather than what you actually do. Approaching the consumer from the inside out resonates with them faster. If you can touch a person’s feelings, and help them understand why you do what you do, the feelings just may be mutual.
Advanced Entertainment Law
This was a very important class to me. It was important because I’m a producer and sometimes I produce tracks that may contain samples in them. Advanced Entertainment Law focused on entertainment contracts and intellectual property protection. To enhance our knowledge of this we studied case studies, lectures, how the digital revolution impacted the entertainment industry. We the opportunity to focus on entertainment law in our own field, and different trends has affected the structure of contracts.
During this course we studied different cases like the Pharrell Williams Blurred Lines case. Cases like this make question the meaning of creativity and originality. I’ve never thought of domain names having anything to do with intellectual property, until I read the Panavision v. Toeppen case. Just these two cases alone show you how important it is to protect your investment. Although this country was built of the enhancement of others ideas, we have to be very careful about given credit when it’s due.
Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution
In this course we focused on issues currently affecting media publishing and distribution. We studied the traditional publishing and distribution model, as well as today’s digital models. Things like piracy; social media, digital rights, management and legislation were discussed and studied. Learning how to build a press kit, and a distribution plan was the most important parts of this class to me.
I’ve learned different strategies for protecting and monetizing my company’s creative content. Due to the new forms of distribution, you are finding more and more artist who is independent. There are no longer walls between artist and their fan base. The opportunity to reach a global audience is now in the hands of the artists.
Digital Marketing
Digital Marketing focused on the development of effective marketing plans. This course consisted of hands-on assignments, case analysis, and current industry research. We studied how to synchronize marketing initiatives across online as well as offline channels, and between desktop and mobile audiences.
Marketing in this age has to be more creative than ever though. You have to realize that every fan you gain is different, and can be grouped into its own segment. Once you realize each segment, you can attack them from that angle. Although we are in a digital age, we must not forget about our traditional ways of marketing. If you can master the art of mixing the two, the sky is the limit.
Business Plan Development
This is the course I was waiting on from the start. Every successful business has to have a plan. The best thing about this course is that it gives you the opportunity to build the plan for your business, and have it reviewed and critiqued. This course carries you step by step through each phase of your business plan.
I’ve always known that having a business plan was the most important part of your business. Now I realize that the plan will allow you to see whether your idea will succeed or fail. During this course we were able to complete an analysis of our chosen industry, and the financials for our business. Those aspects of the class were very important to me.
Final Project: Business Plan
This class was definitely the test. The final project test the skills learned from each course that was taken the entire program. It consisted of the completion of a written business plan, as well as a business plan presentation. This class was is important to every student, but especially the students who are thinking of starting their own business after graduation.
I truly believe the course before prepared me for this course. It’s like the program was built for the student to succeed. Out of the schools I’ve attended, Full Sail is the only one that actually made me feel like I was going to succeed no matter what. This program has allowed me to build the foundation for my career, and gave me a real world experience.
Marketing Reflections
Marketing has always played a vital part in every successful business. Taking this class so far has taught me the importance of search engine optimization, and different social media marketing strategies. Including the task in my PDL timeline goals, I’ve come to learn when it comes to marketing; a company’s values play a very important part in planning a successful marketing campaign. A company’s product may change, but the company’s values should always stay the same. In the YouTube video “The Best Marketing Advice Ever” by Steve Jobs, he gives a great example. Nike is one of the greatest company’s known across the globe. We all know they make shoes, but in their commercials they never discuss why their shoes are better, or about the new features in a shoe. In their commercials they honor great athletes, and great athletics. This shows you who they are, and what they are about. Every great marketing campaign should do the same. It should focus on who, and what that company is about.
Marketing in the music industry has drastically changed over the years due to the digital era. Streaming services has made it somewhat easier for artists to gain a fan base, and social networks have played a major part in fan engagement. Fans today have to be looked at different than they were years ago. Will Hope, Spotify’s director of label relations, stated in the past it was a lot easier to think of a fan as a sale. Fans would go and buy it and that’s it, you don’t have to worry about them again. Now a fan equals someone who is going to play something over a long period of time, and Will Hope considers the economic value of each fan variable. I agree with this, and I believe streaming services is the new way to gain more fans.
One creative example is how Brittney Spears promoted her new single in Uber cabs. Not only were cars painted with her logo on the side of them, there was a blog post encouraging fans to enter a code when requesting a cab between 3pm and 9pm on Sunday. There were surprised gifts including tickets to her concert, and a personal meet and greet. The real aim was to get those riding in the customized vehicles to post their excitement on Facebook and Twitter. Brittney Spears definitely focused her campaign on who and what this single was about, and that is the core of any successful marketing campaign. I will be implementing a lot of these strategies while working with artists, and creating unique marketing plans for them.
Entertainment Media Publishing & Distribution
Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution has been of great value to me. I live by the saying you can’t know where you’re going, unless you know where you’ve been. The great thing about this class is that it takes you back and introduces you to the traditional methods of publishing and distribution. We’ve come a long way from the old ways of printing and distributing. Now days an agent is needed in order to lock in a publishing deal. This class has given us the opportunity to experience the process of finding an agent, and knowing the importance of having one.
Self-publishing and distribution is at an all time high. You find more artists going independent more than ever due to the new forms of distribution, and the digital age. Social media, “Socialnomics”, clouds and lockers have made this possible. In the past only industrial providers had the opportunity to reach a global audience, now anyone can. Another thing that help make self-distribution easier are music aggregators. Not only do they help with distribution, they also help with licensing, marketing, and fan base development.
The part of this class was learning how to pitch your product. How you pitch whatever new product you are bringing to the masses, can mean your success or failure. Having this real world education helped due to the fact I was already in the process of releasing new music. This gave me the opportunity to complete some things for my artist like his press kit, and plans for distribution. Also whoever thought of the Google Doc assignment was a genius. Having classmates participate and add links that will be useful now and in the future is very helpful. It helps with research on topics we face in the entertainment field every day. It’s less time consuming when you have help from numerous people. Overall this class has been a great experience, and I know I’ve gain knowledge that I can take with me during my career path.
Advance Entertainment Law
Advanced Entertainment Law has been a very informativeclass. It touched bases on things like registration forms to launch a business, and also how to obtain protections for intellectual property assets. The music industry is of great interest to me, and obtaining protections for intellectual property assets alone is vital. Not only do I need to know how to obtain it, but also I need to be familiar with how to respect intellectual property belonging to someone else. Taking this class taught me the procedure to obtain permission to use others work, as well as the penalty you could face for failing to obtain permission.
We also analyzed court cases, and applied court rulings so that we could find strategies to avoid any type of lawsuit. Very important cases were discussed like the Blurred lines case, and the Panavision v. Toeppen case. Both cases were dealing with intellectual property. There were lessons to be learned from each one, and knowing how to protect your work is one that stood out to me. The Blurred Lines case taught me the difference between the copyrights to a musical composition, and the copyrights to a sound recording. I’ve never thought of domain names having anything to do with intellectual property, until I read the Panavision v. Toeppen case. Just these two cases alone show you how important it is to protect your investment. By doing research I was also educated on the issues surrounding the use of pre-1972 recordings. This current situation displays the growth of the protection of intellectual property. No matter the circumstance, I personally feel there is a line between innovation from the idea of an existing work, and taking credit for someone else’s creation. Don’t get me wrong; I do believe men who stood on the shoulders of giants built this land, but you have to know the difference between theft and innovation.
Product & Artist Management
Before I began the Product & Artist Management class, I had high expectations. I had high expectations due to the current position I’m in now; I’m currently in the process of managing an artist. I always question myself on how I could improve and be the best manager I could be. This class taught me that, and surpassed my expectations. Reading Artist management for the Music Business by Paul Allen taught me how to evaluate myself, as well as evaluate the artist I work with. When you think of artist management, you have to think of a marriage. It’s a commitment between you and the artist, and it will never work if either of the two does their part. Due to most issues being related to people and how they handle their responsibilities, it’s very important to learn how to motivate your artist to assure their success.
This class also altered the way I think when it comes to presenting a new product, or even expressing the way I may feel about a subject at hand. According to Simon Sinek’s assertion, people are more motivated about why you do something than what you actually do. I truly believe in his assertion, and he taught a great way to implement this into product management. Approaching the consumer from the inside out resonates with them faster. If you can touch a person’s feelings, and help them understand why you do what you do, the feelings just may be mutual.
Endorsements were something I’ve always wondered about to. This assignment gave me the opportunity to look into it even more. Endorsements are not always a good thing, especially if it’s asking too much of the artist, and it doesn’t fit the image of the artist. Terms are always important in any type of contracts; the most important thing is to do what’s best for the artist’s career.
Negotiating & Deal-Making
Before taking Negotiation and Deal-Making class, I specifically said I wanted to be a stronger negotiator, as well as be more knowledgeable in understanding and creating contracts. After completing the class, I definitely feel like I’ve reached my goals. Contracts can be a written or spoken agreement, and negotiating is what builds the foundation for contracts. My attitude about negotiating at first was very aggressive, and very determined to get what I needed. Don’t get me wrong, I still feel like my level of determination is still there. My level of aggression has lowered and it allowed me to make better decisions when it comes to negotiating. I’ve learned that we as mankind, majority of the time allow emotions to alter our decision-making. Well during negotiation, it’s best to put everything on the table and take the important steps to reach a successful agreement.
In Roger Fisher and William Ury’s book Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, they speak of a successful method that you can take to reach an agreement that both party’s can be satisfied with. That method consists of separating the people, focusing on interests and not positions, inventing options for mutual gain, and insist on using objective criteria. There are two that helped me become a better negotiator.
Separating the People
During a negotiation, we have to remember that both parties are human beings with emotions. Autonomy, appreciation, affiliation, role, and their status are five core concerns that drive emotions during negotiations. Ignoring this could cause a huge disaster when sitting at the negotiating table. Be respectful of the other’s concerns, never blame others for your problems, and try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes.
Objective Criteria
Gathering information and facts for a negotiation can be a powerful tool. Having objective criteria can result in a negotiation being fair. It gives reason to the other party of why you’ve set the standards the way you did. Sometimes figures can be thrown out there that may be outlandish, and unfair. So to avoid haggling, objective criteria can help things run a lot smoother.
Entertainment Business Finance
When I think of Entertainment Business Finance, the word wow explains it all. This class really opened my mind up to a lot of things. It gave me a great lesson on personal finance, as well as vital information on financing my own company. Reading Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, was a blessing. It taught me the difference between an asset and a liability. Now I know you’re probably saying everybody knows the difference between the two, well I disagree. I thought my car was an asset that I was investing in until I read this book and realized it was a liability. If I could take back the hands of time, I would have never sign the agreement to purchase it. Now not only am I in debt, I made an agreement to purchase a vehicle with an outstanding interest rate. I never thought of even paying things like this any mind. I just knew that I needed a reliable vehicle that would take me back and forth to work, and didn’t have to worry about to many repairs at the time. What I should have done was made the minor repairs to the vehicle I already own, and search for other investments that would bring back a return. Rich Dad Poor Dad also taught me 2 very important things, scared money don’t make money, and to mind my own business. We can’t be so afraid to lose money that we lose out on opportunities that could make us money.
This class gave us a jump-start on the business that each and every one of us wants to pursue upon graduation. It gave us the skills to realize the progress in a business, whether it’s through vertical and horizontal analysis, or different types of business ratios. Funding is also an issue that each and every entrepreneur faces in the start up phase of his or her business. This class introduced us to different ways to fund our business, and crowd funding was one of them. The last case study was very helpful. It gave a great example of college student after graduating, and trying to get out of debt. Although this was only an assignment, it felt realistic, and I feel every student can relate. As Robert Kiyosaki stated in Rich Dad Poor Dad, it’s not about how much money you can make, it’s about how much you can keep.
Business Story Telling & Brand Development
Since taking the class Business Storytelling & Brand Development, I can’t even look at items in the store the same anymore. Matter fact I can’t even look at the world the same as before. I’ve always thought a brand was simply the logo that represented the company, but it’s more than that.
The story behind the logo is actually what the brand is. Everything we deal with on a day-to-day basis is a brand and has a brand story. From the soap we use to the coffee we drink in the morning, has a brand story. A brand is only as good as its brand story, and that’s what drives consumers to purchase specific items and build loyalty towards those brands. Growing up I experienced this a little going to the grocery store with my mother. If she were buying bleach she wouldn’t just buy the white bottle with bleach written on the side of it, she would buy Clorox. If she sent you to the store to buy items to make something to drink, you better not come back home with Flavor-Aid, it better be Kool-Aid. Flavor-Aide tasted too powdery, and Kool-Aid was used to make everything from popsicles, to pies, and something to drink. Now when I look back, I remember when the Kool-Aid man was a glass container of Kool-Aid with a smiling face on the front of the Kool-Aid pack. Now, he has a shirt, jeans, and sneakers, which really looks cool.
In order to build a successful brand a company has to know its target market, what differentiates its brand from the rest, and how to present it to the world. Taglines are also important. A tagline squeezes the meaning of a company’s competitive position, brand promise, and it’s vision in a few words. Some great examples are Nike; just do it, Adobe; better by Adobe, and Apple; think different. Last but not least, as Simon Sinek stated in his TED speech, every successful company starts with why. Never start with what, because every consumer that comes in contact is going to let why be the first thing on his or her mind. Why should they buy your product? Give the why first, then tell them how you can you’re going to bring your why into action, then give them the product.
Project & Team Management
The most important thing about team management is learning each individual person on your team weaknesses as well as strengths. You may have people on your team who are good at giving speeches, on the other hand, you may have some who are good at hands on things like building a visual presentation. You should always learn how to use these strengths to your team’s advantage.
At the very beginning of my Project & Team management course, we had a very interesting assignment where we had to form teams and complete the task given. I believe the assignment was very beneficial and really tested our team management skills. When we started, the first thing I thought about was Bruce Tuckman’s model for team formation. I believe every student experienced these phases from start to end. These phases include the following, Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning.
The forming phase is always the most exciting phase. Everyone is excited about forming teams and the assignment itself. The most difficult part was figuring out our team members. It was kind of comical and a classmate and I could see that there were a lot of chiefs out their but not enough Indians. Although it was the most difficult part, we got through it. I feel if you can get through the storming phase and reach the performing phase, there is no stopping from there. One of my PDL timeline goals was to watch a YouTube video on how to manage team conflict and this is what prepared me for this particular assignment. I feel applying the videos concepts will also assist me in the future with any team task that comes along. I also got more familiar with the online team tool called Wiggio. I suggest any team that has a task and need to share files and conquer time management to use this online tool.

Industry Research
Home Recording vs Traditional Studios
Due to multiple pressures, home-recording studios has dampened your traditional studios. Home recording studios has become very advanced in quality and budgets for recording projects have decreased over time. According to Chris Stone, founder of the World Studio Group and Record Plant Studios in New York, labels are doing less and cutting back on everything. That mean they’re signing fewer acts and less projects are going into the studios. From personal experience, it’s definitely beneficial to have your own studio now. The recording programs that have been created are high in quality, inexpensive, and user friendly. Wolf Stephenson, owner of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Sheffield, Ala. stated, "When computer and hard-disk recording really got cheap and better at the same time, it just knocked the socks off a lot of studios.” The rising of home studios has caused the closure of a few major market facilities like Hit Factory, Cello, and Royaltone.
Streaming Services & Artist Royalties
Since iTunes launched in 2003 the digital music revolution has reached an all time high. Your digital lockers as well as subscription services are steady increasing. There’s company’s like Sony Music who’ve purchased EMI’s music-publishing business due to the fact that, streaming services pay a royalty of fraction of a penny per listen. Companies that control a large catalogue of songs may see serious payments. The only things though, there are managers and lawyers saying Spotify royalty payments are small. If a song is streamed 60 times, the songwriter gets 9.1 and the artist gets 38 cents. The dream is that one day majority of our music listeners will pay for streaming services to listen to their favorite artist and bring the industry back to it’s glory days. In order for this to happen not only would more people have to subscribe, but royalty payments will also have to increase. Labels are putting way too much into their artist for them to only receive such little ROI.
Artist and Social Media Marketing
When it comes to an artist, social media marketing is more than re-tweeting, attention grabbing Facebook posts, and sharing your music. Social media management requires constant attention, planning, coordination, and communication. When companies outsource, they look for someone who has more than just social media experience, they look for someone who has the ability to produce content or creative experiences. Although the value of social media has grown tremendously over the years, marketers are used to thinking in terms of the lifetime value of each customer. Now worth isn’t just about what you buy, but also how much you can get your friends to buy. Social media also keeps you in the know of trends and a characteristic of your target market and most importantly, data is power.
Overview
The above topics are very important when seeking a career in the music industry. Becoming familiar with today’s user-friendly recording software can save you time, and a pretty penny. With the project I have in mind, I will definitely have an in-house studio that will be beneficial to our budget. Also becoming knowledgeable of todays streaming services is important, this is becoming the new way consumers are accessing their favorite artist music. I see good coming from this if there can be reasonable royalties for artist. Streaming services have become a way for artist to become discovered by new consumers, which in return expands their fan base. Social media is a power tool that will definitely be used in my company. Like I stated before, data is power. Social media can be used to keep up with the latest trends, and build a powerful brand if used properly. This saves a company time and travel expenses when searching for new talent.
Maxwell or Greene?
In my third week of the Executive Leadership course, I’ve found that my leadership style leans more towards Greene’s style. Although I contain more of a Greene style, I also see traits of Maxwell. While Maxwell teaches you different traits a leader may possess and how to acquire them, Greene teaches you how to survive and stay in the game.
My father always told me that I was a born leader, but for some reason growing up I didn’t really understand why. As I got older though, things began to get clearer. I went through different phases and learned many skills from different mentors, but I already had the skills of being an influencer and gaining followers. Being born with these leadership qualities, seeing leadership modeled through out my life, and having self-discipline to become a great leader puts me in Maxwell’s category as a leading leader. (Maxwell IX) The issues that I’ve come across though has somewhat affected my rise to success in the past. Only when I began putting the Greene style in effect is when things started getting better. Even though I had no knowledge of Greene laws until this class, I was putting them into effect the more I grew. I was the type that always thought the world should revolve around me. If I felt like I deserved something and didn’t get it, I would definitely say something and react as if I was looked over in a negative way.
Law 1, 9, and 35 of Greene’s style are very important laws, and should be displayed in any field of work that a person may encounter. Remember, if you’re coming out of college you’re fresh, ready to apply the skills that you’ve acquired. The person above you power may fade soon, apply law 1, and never outshine the master. Let nature run it’s course, outshining them may put your job in jeopardy due to them feeling threaten by your actions. Sometimes we don’t always get the position or the raise we feel that we deserve. Apply law 9; win through your actions and never through argument. As Greene stated in 48 Laws of Power, demonstrate, do not explicate. (Greene) If you can master law 35 it will definitely take you to heights you couldn’t imagine. Master the art of timing. Remember that there are three kinds of times that we deal with; long time, forced time, and the end time. Studying these will allow knowing whether a situation should be drawn out, short term that will upset the timing of our opponents, or should a situation be taken care of with speed and force. (Greene) I know for a fact these laws will assist me in working in the music industry. The music industry is a fast pace working environment that’s forever evolving and you must know how to deal with people and make decisions. I will continue to study Greene and Maxwell more to develop a balance that will definitely help me succeed.
