A reflection on the animated short story called “The Arrow with a Heart Pierced Through Him”, featured in the blockbuster film by Antoinette Jadaone That Thing Called Tadhana.
“Where did you come from?” he asked.
There was an arrow flying in the air, minding his own business, when he suddenly felt something heavy. To his surprise, there was a heart pierced through him.
But there was no reply.
He floated about, asking those along the way, “Have you lost your heart?”
But he couldn’t find the owner of this heart.
He decided to ignore the weight he was carrying by going back to doing what he was doing. He floated away carrying the weight of the heart.
As time passed, he felt the weight decrease. He was either getting used to the weight he was carrying or the heart was carrying itself. One day, the heart just slowly left the arrow. The arrow was glad because he was no longer carrying the heart that pierced through him. As he went about his way, he noticed that something was still weighing him down. The heart was no longer pierced through him, so he shouldn’t feel burdened at all. The arrow decided to move on and live life normally. But something was different. He realized that he was no longer the same arrow before the heart pierced through him. Something was missing, yet the arrow still flew about his way
Until, he heard a familiar voice, “Have you lost your heart?”
It was from the heart that pierced through him.
The arrow didn’t reply, because he didn’t need to.
Love and connection are needs that we all have from the day we are born, right up until the day we die.
Human beings are creatures of habit. We wake up, do our morning routine, go to work (or school), go about our day, come home, sleep, then we repeat the same routine by morning. No matter how meticulously we plan everything, life still intervenes. Someday — somehow — things don’t end up the way we intend them to. This change in schedule could frustrate us, disappoint us, sometimes even anger us. As the resilient beings that we are, we adjust, we adapt and we compromise. We move forward carrying this burden, then we thrive.
I met him a few years back in my country (Philippines) but it was short and random and so I thought that was the end of that, as all chance encounters were.
Because of social networking like facebook,we reconnected and then everything were fast and our story begins. He flew to visit me from Switzerland to Canada and stayed for 3 weeks.
I was doing pretty good of hanging out myself and friends, talked to random of guys without intent of looking for another, though theyre were few who made an effort and invested their time but the connection isnt there. I kept myself busy, like working double shifts, and sometimes around the clock. I was doing pretty good of exploring life i missed and focus bettering myself.I was doing great. It felt liberating, enjoying my own company. Then he comes along.
The unexpected kind of love story begin between us. Despite our distance and the length of time we spent.
In my entire life I only had few relationship and lasted for years because as much as I could I would keep it. The recovery wasnt easy the hatred and how messy was it the relatioship ended. After a few broken hearts, i thought i would never fall inlove like I was.
I loved him without fear, for I knew exactly where I stood. I loved him with respect, because I knew exactly where he stood. I loved him without reservations, for I knew he was worth the wait. I loved him with as much valor as I could muster, because I knew this was a risk to take.
I was smitten by a man who was courteous, insightful, and prudent. He taught me how to love again. But this was a different kind of love. It was perfect.
Where is he now? What happened? Let’s just say, I lost my heart and I still don’t know why or how it happened. My heart just “slowly — very slowly — left the arrow,” as the short story implied. Sometimes we find people when we least expect them. Take The Arrow and The Heart, for example. The Arrow was going about his way, when he bumps into The Heart. He couldn’t understand why they met, but it just happened.
Sometimes we meet people not knowing if they’ll stay or leave. If they stay, then it’s probably meant to be, but when they (unfortunately) leave, you don’t always need to know why they did what they did. Closure isn’t always the key to moving on. Moving on is a choice that you make everyday. It is a process that you have to go through. Each grieving step is necessary in moving forward: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. If we miss a step or force ourselves to skip ahead, we could find ourselves going up and down that grieving ladder without getting to the top. Patience is another factor. It is better not to rush things.
I can’t say I have fully recovered from my recent heartache, but I believe this chapter is about to close. I’m not going to fool myself into saying, “someday, my prince will come,” because we don’t really know what’s in store for us in the future. Still, I am not closing my doors.
It’s a good thing I went through the stages before I watched the film, otherwise, it would’ve been one hell of a roller coaster ride.
To my next heartache! May it be as painfully blissful as the last..

In many ways, true love is similar to marriage or having children. We have romantic fantasies—fueled by society—about these life choices

It is said that souls often travel in groups. People you have known before re-enter your life to fulfil a karmic bond.
“Please don’t think less of me if you don’t always see the best of me.”
— Bruce Adler
“The very purpose of our life is happiness, which is sustained by hope. We have no guarantee about the future, but we exist in the hope of something better. Hope means keeping going, thinking, ‘I can do this.’ It brings inner strength, self-confidence , the ability to do what you do honestly, truthfully and transparently.”
