why do so many people romanticize the 1950â˛s? like calm down we still have milkshakes and racismÂ
I know this^ is probably a sarcastic post, BUTâŚ.
For me, I love the 50s for all of its innocence and hope. There were bad things happening, yes, but it had that lovely pastel veneer that made everything nice and neighborly and honest.
Also the music is unparalleled.
my black friendâs grandmother was physically beaten by a group of white boys when she tried to attend a public high school after segregation had been deemed unconstitutional. her grandfather still has the scars on his back from the pressure hoses aimed at him by police. but iâm glad you like that lovely pastel veneer
So I decided to prioritize my mental health and as I can suddenly and unexpectedly afford to do so without putting my future at stake, Iâve dropped half my classes and decided to take a semester longer to finish my MA. This consequently means that I have time to read outside of my courses/thesis again⌠which in turn means that I can go back to reading all the books I feel I need to read in order to go into my specialty. First up: Beloved.
i was 14 and i was walking through a mall by myself at 12am after my shift at coldstone creamery lol and a bunch of men started whistling and meowing and getting really close to me and they kept asking me questions and i kept not answering until i didnât know what else to do so i said âiâm only 14â and almost in unison they said âwe donât careâ i was so fucking scared i didnât know what to do and they kept talking about how i looked and how my body looked and what they would do i was on the verge of tears i was all alone in a huge mall i knew i couldnât outrun them all i felt totally hopeless until a maintenance worker came up to all of us with a huge industrial broom in her hand, i thought she was going to yell at all of us for being in the mall after hours bc she probably thought we were all friends but instead she cursed all of them out in spanish, threatened to press a panic button on her belt and then proceeded to walk me to the basement garage and waited with me until my mom got there to pick me up she had a death grip on her cart the whole time and a face of steel she looked so strong and i just kept saying thank you and she kept saying not to thank her because she had to stop them.
that was the moment i realized women were the most important beings on this planet and we have to protect each other bc nobody else is going to, she didnât even know me, we couldnât even communicate that well because of the language barrier, she could have lost her job for waiting with me in the parking lot but she looked out for me when she didnât have to, she had nothing to gain from it, iâm 21 now and i tell everyone this story even though it happened 7 years ago, what she did that night helped me form and shape lot of my beliefs early on.Â
i was at a grocery store really late one night and some old guy kind of eyed me as i walked out of the store next to this other lady. She and I made eye contact and i knew she was scared too. we loaded up our groceries into our cars as fast as possible and I had way more bags than her so she got done faster than me. I panicked because i was sure she was going to leave so i just hurried faster, shaking a little, and then i noticed she sat in her car, watching me and making sure nobody came near. She waited not until all my groceries were loaded, or until my cart was put away, or until I got into my car. No, she didnât drive away until I drove away.Â
And that was the moment that I realized how much women need other women. That we canât win this war without each other and we have to be looking out for each other, every second.Â
my last year in new york city, i got off the subway around 9 or 10p.m. i only lived about 5 blocks from the f train, but i hadnât gotten more than two before a womanâs hand suddenly touched my arm.Â
âthat guy behind us is following you,â she said. âhe was watching you leave the train car and followed you up.â
i hadnât noticed him, or at least not noticed him following me. when we stopped outside a grocery store, he stopped half a block back and loitered. the woman linked her arm with mine and walked me several blocks out of her way to my front door and made sure i got inside safely.
another time, nocigar and i were walking home and at a stoplight a stranger grabbed my arm when i wouldnât respond to him and tried to physically drag me over to him. sheâwho is, by the way, not a very physically imposing girlâripped his hand off my arm and snarled, âdonât fucking touch her.â
protect your friends. protect strangers. there are good men in the world, but donât wait for them to do something if you can do it yourself.
I was at a club once and my friend left with her boyfriend so I finished my drink and was heading out to the parking lot when three girls came up to me and basically surrounded me.Â
âThose guys behind us were talking about following you. We can walk with you.âÂ
I have MMA training but have never in my life had been offered the protection and sanction of my own gender. This is so important.Â
GIRL CODE. FUCKINâ GIRL CODE. LEAVE NO GIRL BEHIND. EVER.
A post about romantic relationships
so Iâve been in a relationship for 5 years now. And I see a lot of posts about how people think relationships mean having butterflies forever, your heart beating faster when they walk into a room, about cuddling together every night, legs intertwined, that youâd be so happy to live together youâd sleep on a double bed with each other every night.
And its not really like that, at least not to me.
You stop getting the butterflies when you live together. Your heart no longer speeds up when you see them, but instead, everything calms down. When youre in the room with them, you feel calm, and secure. When you cuddle them you feel your heart beat slow, and the sound of their breathing carry you towards comfort. It doesnt feel like a roller coaster anymore, it feels like home.
You donât sleep curled up with each other every night, legs twisted between theirs so tight its hard to tell where yours begin and theirs end.
Instead, you sleep comfortably, side by side, sometimes facing different directions. But every night, you find yourself scooting backwards on the bed so you bump into them. You snuggle against their arm, or stroke their hair as they fall asleep. There are nights when my boyfriend, in his sleep, reaches around me and pulls me to him, like a child with his teddybear, like I am his comfort.
In the wee hours of the morning before the dawn breaks, when the world is blue and you see through cracked eyes, you curl into their chest and inhale their scent before drifting back to sleep.Â
Kisses arenât always romantic and firey anymore. But there are so much more of them now. There are cold kisses when youâre eating ice cream in the summer, and sticky kisses over breakfast pancakes. Thereâs âim leaving nowâ kisses, and âone more kiss before you goâ kisses. Thereâs sleepy morning kisses before work, when you donât remember the alarm going off but instead the press of their lips against yours is what brings you into the day.
Thereâs kisses before sleep, and, you are so sweet with the things you do kisses. Thereâs kisses because you treat animals so tenderly, and Iâm so glad iâm with you and not someone else kisses. Thereâs quick kisses in the aisles of the grocery store, when its loud and you gravitate together, when instead of having your own personal space and their own personal space, its both of yours together, and you step into their chest to take up less area together.Â
You donât always text each other with confessions of love and care like you used to, because thatâs a given now, and youâve moved on to quirky inside jokes about the life youve built together. You share looks of exasperation and amusement in public, your own little world against the outside one.Â
Relationships arenât always a fairy tale. Theyâre not always fireworks and sparks, at least, after the start.
But they are a quiet rhythm and hum of love and care. Itâs not a fire in your soul, but one in your hearth, keeping you warm and comfortable, comforting you as you drowsily drift into sleep.
And I love that.
Some advice to anyone wanting to seek help for an Eating Disorder.
When you are talking to your GP. Tell them exactly what you are experiencing and tell them exactly what you want. Tell them you want referred to Mental Health.Â
I say this because my personal experience with my GP has been absolutely awful.
When I was 17 I felt convinced I had an Eating Disorder. I printed out one of those sheets of paper that you tick all of the symptoms for eating disorders and show it to your doctor. I had ticked virtually every box. She told me it was depression and sent me home on anti depressants. When I was 18 I went back and told her that I was purging 6, 7 times a day. She told me I was depressed and sent me home with anti depressants. I gave up. Decided that I obviously didnât have an ED. When I was 23 I told her I thought I might be Bipolar She put me back on anti depressants. 2 weeks later I came back spinning out from the anti depressants. She upped the dose. I spun out so bad that I feared for my own safety took myself off of the meds went back to her and demanded that She refer me to mental health. Within one visit to the mental health team they confirmed That I was Bipolar, they told me that they would never prescribe anti depressants to someone with Bipolar without a mood stabilizer. They also told me they suspected an ED. They referred me to the Eating Disorder Team who diagnosed me with an Eating Disorder.
I discharged myself from mental health last year and Yesterday I went back to my GP and asked for a referral back to them again. She had both my diagnosis sitting on the screen in front of her and she told me that she didnât think I have an Eating Disorder that I am actually depressed and tried to put me on anti depressants.Â
I kid you not.
Because of an ignorant doctor I struggled for 6 years longer than I should have without help.
So⌠I guess I am trying to say that If you feel like you have an Eating Disorder then you probably have an Eating Disorder. If your GP doesnât help you then seek a second opinion. Please. Donât struggle alone.
False rape accusations are an anomaly.
True rape accusations are a norm.
Youâre, quite literally, more likely to be killed by a comet than falsely accused of rape.
Re-blog now, read later.
âBecause 1 in 33 men will be raped in his lifetime, men are 82,000x more likely to be raped than falsely accused of rape. It seems many of us would do well to pay more attention to how rape culture affects us all than be paranoid about false accusers.â
To all the guys out there, especially in high school that play sports. It doesnât matter if youâre on a team or not. My back hurts so much and Iâm sure my constant headaches I have are related to me ignoring injuries in high school just because I was told to be tough because Iâm a man. I let bullshit society expectations get to me and allowed me to satisfy with being hurt and now at 20 my body feels kinda like shit more times than it should.
Donât be me Iight. Get healthy. Get happy.
Hypermasculinity out here physically hurting men. Canât imagine how much more it affects black men/athletes.
Y'all deserve care.
