ONYX EQUINOX ART BOOK FROM ALLTHEANIME
Recently, UK anime distributor "alltheanime" released a special edition blu-ray of Onyx Equinox and it included a small art book with some familiar designs we've seen in the past plus some never before seen. I couldn't fit all the pages into a single post, so I'll link the last remaining in the next post. Link to remaining pages here
This is awesome!
I recognize the art at least of:
SofĂa Alexander, Creator and Showrunner
Katy Ho, Character Designer
Johnathan Reyes, Creature Designer
Joey Mason, Art Director
If you want to check out some awesome artists! They should have been credited in the art book itself.
you have permission to pick that 2 year old "abandoned" project back up. it's not mad at you for setting it aside. and maybe time and distance have helped ease or erase the things that made you put it down in the first place.
"Tutorial" on how to "draw" a blind OC.

Boring tired disclaimer: Keep in mind that this is an introductory "drawing" "tutorial" and has some generalizations in it, so not every âX is Zâ statement will be true for Actual People. Which happens to be true for everything in general. Links below so that you can research and do a nuance. Ones that were directly mentioned are bolded.

đ Stop Working for Exposure (Mathematically)
I'm an artist and medical student, and I use art to help me pay some bills.
I built a free, helpful tool because to help prevent other talented creatives from undercharging, as I really see this a lot online.
It's a calculator with a built in reality check
Input your survival costs and expenses
True billable hours
Get the rate you actually need to charge to hit a 20% (or whatever you choose) profit margin.
It generates the rate, a template negotiation email + final invoice.
Plan to keep this tool free, ad-free, and open to everyone.
đ Check your math: fairpaycalc.artres.xyz
If the "Thriving Rate" calculation empowers you to double your quote on your next job, please consider hitting the "Buy me a coffee"button. It keeps the server running and the code flowing <3
I am an artist and medical student and creator of Art-Res, a blog where I write and curate art resources. Hopefully you find art that bring
Thank you for all who tried/spread awareness of the tool and also to people who tipped, truly touched by the support and it means the world! <3
A cool traditional art video that discusses mixing and color, starting with just 3 pigments to mix all colors.

Screw those that say Rauru and Sonia didnt had a child because it was never mentioned in the game...
1st pic is teenager, 2nd pic is young adult.
I love playing around with this character's design, Im using her both inside and outside TotK story because I just really really really REALLY love the design of anything Zonai-related. I'm not a big fan of the actual story tho, and personally HATE Rauru as a concept, but outside of that the visdev team really cooked in this game....
Working on this cutie again cuz I love her đ

writing advice i live by (as someone who writes as a hobby):
your first draft is allowed to be awful. let it be awful, you can always improve it later.
if youâre writing as a hobby, it should be enjoyable and not feel like a chore.
if youâre stuck on a scene and canât get the words out, skip it. write a note for yourself to come back to it later and move on to the next scene. sometimes you just need to look away from the scene and come back to it with a fresh pair of eyes for the words to flow again.
that also applies to finding the right words and metaphors.
consuming media is one of the best cures for writerâs block.
another thing that helps writerâs block is asking yourself: âwhat is the most fun/best/most devastating thing that could happen next?â
do not rush your writing. quality work takes time, so donât ever beat yourself up for being a âslow writerâ. itâs always worth taking your time building the right plot and finding the right words to make something youâre proud of.
youâre allowed to take a break from your writing. writing is hard work and burn out happens. take a break if you need, and come back to it when youâre ready. writing is not a race.
writing a story/plot you love > molding your plot to trendy tropes you donât enjoy.
when youâre writing as a hobby, your work doesnât need to be perfect. it just needs to make you happy. thatâs it.
having more words doesnât mean higher quality work. donât feel bad for having a low word count.
if you like your own story, chances are others will too.
if you're trying to get into the head of your story's antagonist, try writing an "Am I the Asshole" reddit post from their perspective, explaining their problems and their plans for solving them. Let the voice and logic come through.

i'd like to add that the shadow color isnt necessarily dictated entirely by the primary light source, but the bounce light! so for the example of a sunny environment, the reason the shadows are blue are because of the light from the blue sky reflects across the environment; but, if the character were to be under tree cover, the bounce light would be coming from the leaves and thus the shadow would look greener.
Yee yee!!! You got it right on the nose!
Bounce light is something I didn't cover but I adore it!
Gotta work on my bounce light đȘ

James Gurney is an absolute master and gives really good clarity on colour techniques. Yes, it is traditional paint focused, but the principles are the same. Yes it is informed by the environmental colour but as a painting technique it is achieved this way!
I would also suggest that in digital processing, rather than apply a regular colour layer at a mid opacity, try out the different types of layers, Eg. Screen or Multiply. This can give you at least a starting point to help direct your colour palette.
Layer Blend Modes are so so so important to working in digital art. There's a ton of math that goes into figuring out how the layers should blend together, which is why some of the modes you can pick are literally called Multiply, Add, Divide, and Difference (that's subtraction). The graphics software takes the color values of your base and blend layers and runs a calculation to get your resulting layer appearance. The ones that don't have specifically mathematical sounding names are still doing calculations, but they're more complicated (think linear Algebra and higher). Some of them, like dodge and burn, are named for actual photo editing techniques.
While it's not super important to know about the mathematical side of blend modes, I think it's worth knowing at least enough about how each of the categories of blend modes works and why they do what they do; if for no other reason than having a starting point when you start experimenting with them in your work.
An overview of the basic blend modes and how they work from Genevieve's Design Studio: Accessible with minimal color knowledge; practical and illustration focused. https://youtu.be/kMc87hQrJd0?si=TWCB365pKSfWS8p0. (16 minutes) This creator also has a ton of free resources you can download, including a Blend Modes cheatsheet, but fair warning: you have to create an account to get them!
Want to learn even more about the math-y stuff? It has great film visuals! A video from FilmmakerIQ: You need some basic knowledge of RGB color models, understanding of values/luma, and at least a tenuous understanding of Algebraic formulas.
