At the age of 2, Helen Keller contracted an illness that left her both blind and deaf. With the help of her teacher Anne Sullivan, herself visually impaired, Keller learned how to communicate. In 1904, at the age of 24, Keller graduated from Radcliffe, becoming the first deaf and blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She would go on to become a world famous author and lecturer. She is also remembered for her political work on behalf of people with disabilities, the suffragettes, antimilitarism, the socialist party, worker and labor rights, and a birth control supporter. In 1915, she and George Kessler founded the Helen Keller International (HKI) organization. This organization is devoted to research in vision, health, and nutrition.
