Anne Bonny (8 of March, 1698? - 25 of April, 1782?)

Anne Bonny was an Irish female pirate born in Cork, she was the illegitimate daughter of a lawyer and a servant woman. With her parents, she moved to the New World as a newborn. She lost her mother in her teens and further looked after her fathers household until she fell in love with James Bonny, a pirate who wanted her fathers’ plantation estate. Despite her fathers wishes to make Anne a respectful lady, Anne married James Bonny and was kicked out of her fathers home.

James Bonny took Anne to New Providence Island, the Pirate Capital, where Anne established many friends; including Pierre, who was an admired homosexual and owned a ‘ladies establishment’, or commonly known as a brothel. James Bonny had difficulties supporting both himself and Anne and became a pirate informer for Woodes Rogers. Anne met Calico Jack Rackham, left her husband and joined Rackham’s crew. She was one of few female pirates, another is Mary Reid, who was also apart of Rackams crew. In 1720 Rackham’s ship was attacked by the British Navy, many were taken as prisoner, including Mary and Anne. Mary died of a fever but Anne’s fate is unknown. It is said that her father bought her ransom and she moved back to Carolina where she gave birth to Rackham’s child and a further 8 with her new husband, Joseph Burleigh. She then died in 1782.
