Someone needs to create (find? Do historic records exist?) a floorplan/layout of both Erebus and Terror so that I’m not having to go back through several episodes to try to piece together which parts of the ship are actually where, right now I’m just bullshitting my way through by virtue of fic logic and would prefer to not have to wildly make things up

I’m assuming that both ships are laid out fairly similarly to each other? I seem to recall seeing a sketch of the Terror lieutenant’s cabins that was an actual historic thing, not something from the show, but for some reason I didn’t save it. Alas

alright op, this is what I've got. The terror has 4 decks: the top, lower, orlop and hold. heres a ref to the lower deck (where people ate, slept, held officer meetings) :

this is a reference for the orlop/hold. It's hard to tell what's going on at first but you'll start recognizing the big parts, like the engine and the coal storage, cable lockers, that kind of stuff:

and this is a blog post by the guy who designed the ship for the amc show. You mentioned the contemporary sketch of the cabin, that's in this blog post. This guy is The Expert on the HMS terror.

I've been getting back into comics while I wait for more info from my concept job, and I thought I'd make a post about something very important to me, which is COMIC PANEL VARIATION and HOW TO THINK ABOUT IT.

Also, yes, before you ask, these rules can absolutely be broken. I strategically break them to create a noticeable shift or flow in the storytelling, like so:

You can also probably make your own set of 5 IN 5 rules! I like to draw facial expressions and backgrounds and hands (like a masochist), so my 5 in 5 is definitely geared towards that. If you like to make more quiet, introspective comics, you could throw in a panel with NO DIALOGUE every 5 pages, or a mood panel with no characters, for example!
