Robert H. Sharf - Mindfulness or Mindlessness (ASI 2013)
http://www.midwayjourney.com/about/
"Midway Atoll, one of the most remote islands on earth, is a kaleidoscope of geography, culture, human history, and natural wonder. It also serves as a lens into one of the most profound and symbolic environmental tragedies of our time: the deaths by starvation of thousands of albatrosses who mistake floating plastic trash for food.
The images are iconic. The horror, absolute. Our goal, however, is to look beyond the grief and the tragedy. It is here, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, that we have the opportunity to see our world in context. On Midway, we can not deny the impact we have on the planet. Yet at the same time, we are struck by beauty of the land and the soundscape of wildlife around us, and it is here that we can see the miracle that is life on this earth. So it is with the knowledge of our impact here that we must find a way forward."

“What’s the point of education if we’re not combating daily injustice? Education becomes meaningless if you become desensitized to what a community goes through.”

Zhang Kechun - The Yellow River (2010-12)
“Kechun spent two years on the banks of the Yellow River, the waterway considered both the cradle of Chinese civilization and, when it breaks its banks, its curse. ‘I wanted to photograph the river respectfully,’ said Zhang. ‘It represents the root of the nation.’
Kechun’s project has the feel of a pilgrimage. He traveled on a fold-up bicycle, following the river’s silted water from the coastal flats of Shandong, west, to the mountains of Qinghai. He journeyed for a month at a time, lugging a large format Linhof camera, a tripod and just enough film. Sometimes, he said, he went a week without taking a picture. ‘I wanted to take my time, to slow down and experience every second of the moment.’
He did not set out to document environmental destruction — others have done that. But China’s headlong rush to develop has scarred the country’s land, air and water, and the mighty Yellow River is no exception. ‘I started off wanting to photograph my ideal of the river, but I kept running into pollution,’ he said. ‘I realized that I couldn’t run away from it, and that I didn’t need to run away from it.’
Though the lunar tones and low horizons feel foreboding, Kechun insists the project carries a message of hope. There is a reason all the people in his pictures look tiny: ‘The power of humans is nothing compared to the power of nature, even when we try to change it. Century upon century, the river runs.’”

In Focus: Earth House 2013
Last Saturday, March 23, iconic landmarks and skylines were plunged into darkness as people and businesses around the world participated in Earth Hour 2013, turning off their lights at 8:30 p.m. local time. Earth Hourwas organized by the World Wildlife Fund in 2007 as a way to bring attention to energy consumption, sustainability, and climate change issues. More than 150 countries took part in last year’s event, and the movement has spread even further, with Palestine, Tunisia, Suriname, and Rwanda among a host of newcomers pledging to take part this year. The images below (starting with photo number two) are interactive — click on each image to “turn off the lights.” (For wider screens, be sure to click the 1280px option below.)
