Going back to school can be very nerve-wracking, so here are a few things that may help make it a bit easier!
This one is super important, and something I personally need to work on. Getting a good night’s rest before school, especially the first day, will make you feel so much more confident and ready to get things done! Some people need more or less sleep than others, so before school starts try to figure out what time is best for you to go to bed so you’re prepared when the time comes.
2. Organize your supplies!
I always try to have my supplies all together before school starts, partly because I’m excited to use them and partly because it makes things so much less rushed on the first day! Having everything already in your backpack means you can just grab it and go when you need to!
3. Try to eat a good breakfast!
Personally, I’m never hungry first thing in the morning. But I know that when I get to school I will be, so I always pack a little something to eat before class starts. Eating in the morning actually helps your metabolism, and gives your body fuel to use during the day so you can learn better! Some of my favourite breakfasts are avocado toast, cereal, or a cereal bar.
While it may seem like life or death for you to pass every test, it’s not! Everyone gets a bad mark sometimes, and you can afford to mess up. Don’t overwork yourself to the point of exhaustion, it will hurt you more than it will help. If you have a ton of homework to do, do a little bit then take a quick break to get a snack, read a book, or play a game for a bit. You’ll feel much better than if you just dragged yourself through all your work. Plus, you’ll remember more! I find studying really hard, and I tend to zone out if I’m not fully engaged.
5. Minimize your phone use!
I know, they’re tempting. Stuck in a boring class, studying, or trying to sleep? You’ve probably thought about getting your phone out. Don’t! (Unless you’re taking a break) It’ll only set you back further, or make it harder for you to fall asleep. If you struggle with this, there are some great apps to help! My personal favourite that I use all the time is Forest. You plant a little tree for however long you want to stay away from your phone, and if you leave the app, the tree dies. You can track your progress over weeks, months, and (I think) years. It costs a few dollars, but there’s also a free app called Flora that does pretty much the same thing!
6. Pick out your clothes the night before!
As someone who has a lot of trouble getting up in the morning, I can easily say this is a life saver! I always set out what I want to wear the next day so if I wake up 10 min before my bus comes, I’m not scrambling to find an outfit. Plus, if you get anxious about the first day like I do, it’ll save you a lot of worrying.
7. Make time for yourself!
This is one thing that I wish I had prioritized years ago. Spending 6 hours at school can be draining, both mentally and physically. After you get home, PLEASE take some time just to sit by yourself and unwind! Homework can wait until you recharge your brain. Get a snack, sit down, and just relax. You’ll feel so much better and ready to work afterwards!
