Lunch Poems: ‘Three Airs’ (c. 1958) by Frank O’Hara
“Yes, I’m drunk. And you’re beautiful. And tomorrow morning, I’ll be sober but you’ll still be beautiful.”
—
“The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself.”
—
i went to the top of the mountains
to try & get a glimpse at what god sees.
hope i’d find the answers
to save the world in a tree top.
figured the wind would sway
my body in the right direction.
all i found was nature being she.
there is beauty in the way
every entity harmonizes to create one symphony.
i'm not sure enough to say—
i think god sat down beside me.
as i admired heaven on earth,
a voice amongst the silence
repeated over and over gently,
“everything that you're looking for is within you. just be.”
— sevyn hale
when i need to recharge,
it is in my solitude that i come alive.
this is where i go when i need the person
that i am on the outside
to be a better reflection of me internally.
it's a time to mourn the past
that i refuse to let hold onto me.
in this seclusion,
i will create & reflect as a means to evolve.
so that when the crowd comes,
i am confident in my stride.
my head is never down.
i will be the drum that plays
when a drummer in a band
has their solo performance to shine.
— sevyn hale
i planted flowers in you that i will never see bloom.
— sevyn hale
every morning i wake
and i paint myself blue
to fit into society's standards of likability.
there are few people
that have seen the blank canvas.
there are even fewer
that don't look at me with pity
for the girl that would never be feel pretty.
— sevyn hale
i had a talk with the inner-child
who dreamed of being an actress.
turns out it was never about
signing autographs or being on tv.
she told me,
"i just wanted to be anyone else but me.”

“Power”
yes, you should feel uncomfortable. yes, it must shock you and strike to your core every time this happens. do not let the repetitive cycle of racial violence numb you to the present, daily suffering of our black brothers and sisters. stop writing and glorifying empathy and tenderness if you are not willing to extend that into practice for your oppressed neighbors of color. stand up.
“I am too pure for you or anyone.”
— Sylvia Plath (via amargedom)
