Emma afraid to lose Killian to death and Killian facing + defeating it (4a) / Killian afraid to lose Emma to darkness and Emma facing + defeating it (4b)
Okay I don’t know from where to even begin but if you are one of those who are still disappointed with 4x11 and how their 4a arc ended (and it still robs you from enjoying captain swan journey), this might actually help you because until last episode, I was one of you guys. I don’t know but to me, after 4x11 ended, everything felt disconnected and all their moments, while very beautiful, felt random. What I mean to say is that they felt like pieces of puzzle but I was not able to solve that puzzle. Unlike season 3, where I knew what their journey was – to find home – I couldn’t understand what the overall purpose of those moments we have been getting were? Sure they were to tell us how much they love each other and bring out the best in each other, but how were those moments contributing to the overall story? They have spent so much time giving us those moments, surely they weren’t just to please us fans…there had to be a purpose and I couldn’t understand what, especially after the way season 4a ended. Turns out, all I had to do was change the perspective from where I was watching their journey and I think last episode, lily, played a huge role in making me realize that. And I couldn’t have been happier now with the way the story is going, at least the captain swan journey (there are still some other elements that I am unsure of but I am hoping that it will eventually fall into place as well). I will put it under read more coz this is huge!
I saw this and wrote an AU and I’m not even sure what this is.
P.S. - The song used is Something New by Hozier ;)
Every Saturday night, Emma gets ready for her shift at The Rabbit Hole and as if karma is trying to punish her for something, every Saturday night, ...
Who’s standing in our way?
But I’m not sure what it is…
Emma's reaction in the finale
The more I think about it, the more Emma’s reactions to the heart thing make sense to me. I understand that some people hoped for more, but I do think the way it played out makes sense for her character.
First of all, Emma does not talk about her feelings. She’s been opening herself up, yes, but even when she lets people in she expresses herself more with actions than words - hugs, ruffling Henry’s hair, forehead kiss for her little brother, kisses and cheek caresses for Killian. She’s not vocal, never has been.
The only times she really gets emotional is when she’s faced with loss. It’s a pattern, with her, that once everything is okay again, she’ll just move on. She called her parents “Mom” and “Dad” in a moment like that, but not afterwards, and when Snow brought it up she shut down. She was visibly upset at leaving Killian in 3x11, but when he found her again, there was no mention of it (and he apparently knew better than to bring it up). Same thing with her parents, that time. Emma does tearful goodbyes when she can’t avoid it, when it overwhelms her, but she doesn’t do tearful reunions. Because at that point, you’ve got time again, you’re safe, there isn’t nearly the same pressure that you have when you’re faced with losing someone forever. Emma needs to be really pushed to get emotional, it has to be a now-or-never situation, and reunions or moments of relief just aren’t that.
Emma also doesn’t have the best relationship with words, especially emotional ones. Neal said he loved her, and left. Ingrid said she loved her, and left - twice. If you want Emma to believe you, you’ve got to show her, not tell her. If you tell her too much, she shuts down. No one knows that better than Killian.
And let’s not forget - he hasn’t let her in. Not really. Oh, he loves her, but he didn’t trust her to believe him. I can’t blame him; she hasn’t really given him reason to. And again, that’s not something that can be resolved with words or a conversation, that’s something that needs to be built up with actions. I have a feeling that we’ll see that devleopment in 4b, at least a little.
With all that in mind, I want to offer my interpretation of the scene in Granny’s.
I think that the way it played out actually made sense for them. You can see her relief that he’s okay in the way she looks at him. You can see Killian Jones come back to himself in that split second before he kisses her. And no, they don’t talk much, but talking would open up a floodgate that I don’t think they’re ready to open yet.
This post offers a great explanation of why Emma doesn’t talk about it. She can’t handle losing Killian, and I think that extends to thinking about losing Killian or confronting the fact that she almost did. She only knew about this heart thing for a few minutes before it was resolved. She didn’t feel the full impact of it at the time, and it makes sense for her to not dwell on it, to avoid realising the full impact of it after the fact.
All Killian says is a reminder of what he told her before, which doubles as a reminder of that entire conversation for the viewers and an assurance to Emma that he knows she cares, he knows what this means to her, she doesn’t need to say it. She says nothing, but she literally holds his heart in her hands with no sign of discomfort, and she slams it back into his chest with confidence. She knows she won’t hurt him. She knows he can take it, that he’ll be fine. She trusts him to be fine. And he is.
And then she leaves, to have a drink with Regina. The interpretation that makes sense to me is this: she wants to stay with Killian. But staying with Killian means confronting the fact that she almost lost him, making that moment into a big deal, acknowledging that he almost died. It’s too much, plain and simple. She’s not ready, not able, to get that emotional, especially in a non-crisis situation.
Trying to cheer up Regina with a drink and a chat means going back into Savior mode, gaining some distance and detachment. Focusing on someone else’s problems means distraction from this thing that’s too big and overwhelming for her to even acknowledge right now.
I get that it’s frustrating, but that’s Emma for you. We have literally never seen her come out of a situation like this and get emotional. The most she’s ever done is give Henry a hug or let her parents hug her.
The fact that she kissed Killian and had that moment with him speaks volumes about their relationship, to me. She now treats him the way she treats her family. That’s huge. Who would have thought that this time last year?
So that’s my take on it. I know people were disappointed, and I understand, and I’m not arguing. This is just my solution, I suppose, in terms of finding a way it makes sense in context. And when I look at it like this, it’s such a beautiful and significant moment for them, so I wanted to share.
I’m a survivor.
The LAST thing Killian Jones wants to be is another person for Emma Swan to worry about. (or why I thought that scene with his heart was well written)
I know a lot of people were disappointed by the way the story line with Hook’s heart played out in the mid season finale. There was a lot of speculation that it would play out differently. But if you know the characters well it honestly makes PERFECT sense.
Emma Swan is the Savior. Killian knows this and is 100% behind her on this, in fact he is often the one encouraging and supporting her in her acceptance of this role. And the last thing he wants to be is a distraction from her mission, whatever it may be at any given time, to save those she loves and to bring back their happy endings.
Hook has told her time and time again that she DOESN’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT HIM. Because he knows losing people is a huge fear for her and he wants to be that ONE thing that doesn’t cause her stress. He wants his relationship with her to be the one thing she is certain of - he wants her to feel safe with him. He wants to be her rock.
Hook has faced death without fear time and time again. At times he’s even welcomed it. So his anguish this season was not because he feared losing his life, but because he feared that when Rumple crushed his heart it would also crush Emma’s.
He had promised her "You don’t need to worry about me love". And the thought of failing her was killing him.
So as much as a heartfelt conversation was what many fans were looking for in that scene where Emma replaced Hook’s heart, it would have been out of character. Instead what we got was:
"I told you Swan, I’m a survivor."
It was perfect. It was in line with his character. It demonstrates his selflessness. Killian Jones isn’t about to drum up drama and emotion by reminding the woman he loves - a woman who has explicitly expressed her fear of losing him - that he almost died. She was there - she saw it. She tried to stop it and she failed. The last thing he wants to do is dwell on this. Instead he calms her fears. He reassures her.
That is Killian Jones. And that is why he is a perfect partner for the woman who has the weight of the world on her shoulders.
He knows that talking about her feelings is very hard to do - so instead of letting her ramble on he grabs her and he kisses her. It’s a moment of love and of celebration, for him and for her, of the fact that he is very much alive.
I loved that it wasn’t anything like the scene where Mulan gave Aurora her heart back. Emma Swan jammed that heart back into his chest with a force that showed exactly how she felt about the fact that it had been outside of his body at all. And he pushed her up agains that wall with a force that showed exactly how much he missed being able to love her completely while his heart was gone.
It was forceful and passionate and everything Emma needed right then. And everything Killian wanted. There was nothing timid or gentle about this moment because there is nothing timid or gentle about them or their love for one another. This is them. This is the ship.
For fans who wanted more I assure you - we were not meant to assume that the minute we saw on screen and the single kiss was all the time the two of them spent together. The length of the scene and the cut away to Emma’s conversation with Regina in the diner were a matter of sloppy editing. And yes, it did feel a bit rushed…
but it ended with Emma happy. Hook makes her happy. As far as Emma’s concerned she’s already got her happy ending. She has everything she ever wanted. Her parents, her son, a guy whom she loves and who assures her that she doesn’t need to worry about him - that she won’t lose him like she’s lost those before him.
And so in typical hero fashion Emma is off to help everyone else find theirs. It’s who she is and Killian Jones loves her for it. It’s what he signed up for when he decided to spend his life by her side.
First “I love you”s and True Love’s Kisses for the Savior - the hero of our story - are not midseason finale material. Those things will come. And I can assure you it will be worth the wait. For Hook and for us!
He loves he SO much that he was actually able to break out of Rumple’s control, ever so slightly, to grab on to her and try to warn her. Warn her this wasn’t him, warn her not to trust what he was saying. THAT’S true love okay. Rumple had his HEART. He was under complete control here, but he managed to push through JUST enough to send his Swan a message. It’s just all too much for me to take in right now. Do not tell me Killian Jones doesn’t care for Emma Swan more than anything. Do not.

I told you, Swan.

Hook & Emma Scene 4x12 Once Upon A Time
Colin uses all of Robert’s inflections and manner of speaking in this scene…good actor.
DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TIMES I RE-WATCHED THIS SCENE ON MY TV JUST IN AWE OF COLIN’S ACTING. DO YOU? IT WAS OVER FIVE. EVEN HIS HAND MOVEMENTS WERE RHYTHMICALLY LIKE RUMPLE’S. AND THE KICKER IS RUMPLE IS TRYING TO SOUND LIKE HOOK. AND HE ALMOST SUCCEEDS. HE USES KILLIAN’S BUZZ WORDS LIKE ALAS AND LOVE BUT HE CAN’T STOP HIMSELF FROM TALKING IN HIS NATURAL RHYTHM. IT’S SLIGHTLY SLOWER AND CALMER (ESPECIALLY BECAUSE YOU CAN TELL IT’S SCRIPTED (BY RUMPLE)). HE PAUSES BETWEEN WORDS BECAUSE HE THINKS HIS WORDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT. THERE IS A BALANCED PATTERN OF WHETHER THE ENDS OF HIS WORDS GO UP OR DOWN. SO COLIN IS SPEAKING LIKE HOOK SPEAKING LIKE RUMPLE SPEAKING LIKE HOOK. AND ITS SUBTLE AND SO THERE AND THAT’S WHAT MAKES THE ACTING SO GOOD TO WATCH. AND HIS EYES. HIS MOTHERFUCKING EYES IN THIS SCENE. ACTING IS ALL ABOUT THE EYES AND COLIN FUCKING NAILS IT. BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE THAT LIGHTS ARE ONE BUT NO ONE IS HOME. EXCEPT THE MOMENT AT THE END WHERE HE IS GRABBING EMMA’S ARM AND FIGHTING FOR CONTROL AND HIS EYES FLICKER TO LIFE MORE. COLIN. COLIIIIIIIN. I WANT TO JUST HEAR YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR ACTING PROCESS FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER.
OKAY BUT EMMA’S HAND GIVES ME LIFE OKAY. THAT IS ALL.
Really? Her hand? Let your eyes drift a little south maybe…
BOTH. BOTH IS GOOD.
Okay but did everyone notice Killian kissing his own heart once he finally got it back in his possession? IT HURTS!
the rest of the world was black and white; but we were in screaming color
