Now that everyone is discussing Nolan's Odyssey movie, I feel like it's a good time to let non-Italians know that the production dumped plastic props into the Italian sea. Weirdly enough I could not find any article in English about it but it's a fucking problem nonetheless.
I might translate this article later today. This one was the most complete one, even in Italian news it's not talked about that much.
Non è la prima volta che la produzione solleva un vespaio in Sicilia. A Lipari una squadra di sub sarebbe però già impegnata a bonificare i
They dumped plastic skeletons in environmentally protected areas, against the literal contracts they had to sign to get the permits to film in environmentally protected areas. Like they not only did a bad ecological thing that freaked out some divers, they literally broke environmental protection laws and their contract with the Italian government
"Stains of Time" Bucky Barnes, WinterWidow, Bucky&Steve | MCU

(If playback is choppy, trying turning off ambient mode like I had to ;.; )
Do y'all know how long this took me to make?! A year and a half! Not consistantly, there's less than 10 days of actual editing according to my files and the rest of it was just plain ol' vidder's block.
Anyway, a year and a half ago @missmorwen reblogged this post and it got me earwormed for a Bucky vid. I wanted WinterWidow, but there's only so much of them I can do with the little bit of nothing they gave us for them, so it's also him and Steve and him and...um...himself?
Also, there might be a few clips in here only because they do things to me. (The pavement slide? The bike flip? Ahhhh!)
And I don't know what else to put other than if I hold it up high enough will you pat my head and put it on the fridge with the pretty magnet?
When my sister asked me what the song was and what the vid was about I gave her this face:
"I understand the sport very well" followed immediately by "I didn't know what a red card was"
I see he's just as much of an expert in football as all the other things he's an expert in
Trump tries to cheat and all he accomplishes is that it makes Belgium so mad they remember how to play football and beat the US 4-1. Poetry.
and this isn't anti-USA btw, he also likely screwed over the US team because football is also a mental game and this whole thing put so much more pressure on them. Not to say that Belgium wouldn't have won anyway, but imo it's no accident that every pundit agrees it was the US' worst game in the tournament. That third goal alone showed that they didn't have their head in the game and I'd be amazed if that wasn't at least partly because of the controversy and/or the pressure generated by it.
first, hope you're doing well! i've been seeing all your posts about the heat wave and i hope you and yours are able to keep safe
second, any tips on maintianing canon characterizations (or close to) when working on full au's/show re-writes? im the earlier CS anon and reading your fics has kinda encouraged me to start externalizing some of my ideas but im worried im getting tooooo into fanon territory. i've seen some of your posts about characterization but i was wondering how you handle it in stories that are like complete canon divergence/alternate universe (for context, this au is a bit of a culture/race swap, backstory redo, etc.) thanks much! have a good rest of your week ^^
Thank you! We've been pretty lucky here so far, nothing crazy in terms of heat, I've been far more worried for friends and family across the pond!
As for characterisation, idk if I can really say anything that others haven't said more eloquently, but here goes. And with the caveat that everyone has their own interpretation of canon and characters, so chances are, not everyone is going to agree with your take no matter what, and that's okay.
With AUs, I try to look at the core of who a character is, what about them is personality that doesn't really change and what's more due to circumstances, and then how that personality would be expressed in a different setting. So Emma comes off as quite closed-off in canon, but she's also always ready to help and open up to people, she has an inner optimism and faith that she tries to deny but keeps coming through because that's who she is. On the other hand, I would put her guardedness and cynical streak down to her experiences growing up, not her personality. If she'd grown up in the Enchanted Forest with her parents and never met Neal, I think she'd still be quick to help people and reach out to them, but I think she'd be more optimistic overall and less inclined to deny her feelings. We saw how readily she fell in love with Neal. Granted that was also teenage idealism, but I think if he hadn't betrayed her, she'd still be a lot more like that.
As an example, I wrote an AU where Emma knew her parents and was raised by her dad until she was 11, and she grew up knowing magic was real. Obviously that changes her from canon in a few ways. But she's still Emma, so she's still a little messy, she doesn't do things by the book like Regina wants her to, she's brave and determined to save her family, she reaches out to Killian and offers him a place like she does in canon. She's less reluctant to trust him though, because this Emma grew up encouraged to trust her gut, and while she did experience betrayal, she always had people to help her as well.
If she grew up/lives in a different culture, then I would think about how that might change how she reacts to betrayal and offers of friendship, whether it's likely to make her more or less guarded emotionally, whether optimism and faith are normal or seen as aspirational or mocked, and how that affects how others treat her or how she treats them, and how she feels about herself. Things like that.
So yeah I'd say I'd look at canon for an overall idea of who this character is at their core, and then see how that works in your setting. It's sort of working backwards from canon to get to the character's key traits, then working forwards in a different direction? I think really the key is to have it worked out in your mind why the characters are doing/saying/thinking what they are. To basically have a line from canon to wherever you end up, and to have an understanding of who the character is at the back of your mind when you write them.
And honestly, even if some people think it's OOC, that really doesn't matter. I've read SO many fics where some or all characters felt OOC to me. Sometimes it bothers me, sometimes it doesn't, and that's going to be different for everyone too. Especially in OUAT's fandom, there are a few very popular fanon ideas that I don't like or agree with, but they're in a lot of fic and meta out there and I'm pretty sure a lot of people would claim they're not fanon at all, it's canon to them. I probably veer into fanon territory myself at times, I definitely have my own headcanons for some things as well.
So I really would say try not to worry about it. If any of this advice helps then great, if not just ignore it honestly. Write your fic how you want to write it.

Hey so as a Brit I really appreciate these tags
I'm Indian, born in india.
My mom (also India born) lived in India most of her adult life and even she's fkn struggling.
The UK isn't built for this and that's what so many people don't get. It's been absolutely shite the last few days, and it's only gonna get worse
My sister works in a hospital and she's fkn struggling, especially with how her meds are interacting with the heat.
It's a shit show all round and I can't imagine how the elderly or kids are handling
Oh wow, yeah, it sounds horrific. I can't even imagine what it must be like for hospital staff atm. I'm across the pond and it hasn't been nearly as bad here, but I've seen it on the news and it looks so bad. I've seen several videos and comments as well from people from places like Ghana and the south of Italy talking about how different a heatwave in the UK is and how much they're struggling with it despite being used to heat. I think it's hard for people to really grasp it unless they've experienced it. The UK is built to heat up, not cool down, and it's so humid, and even installing AC is not as simple as people would like it to be. And it's not just affecting people. Spain had power cuts because the infrastructure melted, in Germany they had to close some of the Autobahnen because they were melting. Point being that yes it is objectively abnormally hot and it's a problem.
Imo it's so dismissive and even cruel to call people "weak" when they're literally dying from the heat, or suffering because of a medical condition. That's not weak, I'd say it's the opposite. Like, if you're still out there working under terrible conditions, out there helping others even, you're not weak for struggling, you're tough as nails imo.
And honestly even if someone is weak, so what? They don't deserve consideration or accommodation? It's okay to laugh at them? That's bully behaviour, and imo it's no accident that people who think like that end up echoing the kind of crap that the far-right say.
Anyway thank you for sharing, my heart goes out to you and yours. I really hope it cools down for you and stays that way, that's all I can really say!
MRI machines and cooling units and AC and IT systems in hospitals are breaking due to the heat. Lab equipment is failing. Some cancer treatments cannot be done due to machine failures. A&E overcrowding is worse due to heat related health issues and sheer amount of people is making the heat in hospitals worse (and the AC! Is breaking!) Patients with appointments are being advised to bring in "a lot" of water with them to be able to safely attend. Fans cannot be used in hospitals. Norwich has no functuoning MRI scanners right now. And the staff have to keep working through all of this, they are getting ill and sleep deprived which is compounding issues further. This is not normal 👍
In the PNW too a ton of us live in houses without air conditioning because we never needed it before, you could just run a box fan in the window overnight. We literally do not have the infrastructure
"Europeans/Northerners/(Insert Group Here) are just weak" also ignores the class issue.
The poorest folk are the ones living in the homes and apartments that are too old for inbuilt AC and that haven't been retrofitted for it. And they can't afford window units, especially not with the markup, if there even is one left in the store to buy. The people sweltering in the back of every restaurant right now where the aircon is broken but the manager won't close? Those are working class people who can't afford to get fired, working over stove tops in 105F heat.
In most of these locations these poorest people are disproportionately likely to not be white* which makes the repeated smug geniuses in every thread like this piping up with “white people problems!” particularly disgusting. Beyond the perennial point we keep trying to convey on this webbed site that guys, equating ‘Europe’ only with ‘white people’ is what our local racists do and people claiming to be progressive need to stop repeating their talking points.
*plus even outside the lowest incomes or the most heat-intensive manual jobs, things like home ownership rates are also correlated with ethnicity [UK stats as example] and a) a lot of rental tenants are prohibited from having anything except free-standing devices even if they can afford them and b) window AC units are not compatible with a lot of building windows in the UK (casement has long been much commoner than sash) and afaik many other European countries, because they were never built with them in mind. Because this is 15-20•c hotter than summer temperatures at the time they were built. Because of that whole global climate crisis.
This article on housing in Paris was a rough read, and most (possibly all, idk) of the Parisians quoted were Black or North African French, who are in fact a large, long-standing and important part of the population. This really should not be news to anyone.
Many of France’s buildings are not designed for hot weather – and low-income housing estates are suffering the worst
actually I think if you tell (non-climate-denying) people who complain about the heat that it's just gonna get worse forever now that you ARE being an arsehole and that's not helpful at all. cos they fucking know. we fucking know. what does that help. if you want to redirect conversations about extreme weather into climate action have you considered something like "god I know right? that's why I'm doing XYZ* to see if I can improve things locally so it doesn't get worse, want to join me?"
*local action, campaigning, planting trees, targeted politician lobbying, whatever: something CONCRETE and achievable with measurable results
otherwise all you're doing is making powerless and despairing people feel more powerless and despairing and that isn't helping shit
"want to help us plant more trees around the city to improve passive cooling and urban resilience, and be part of a group that's actually doing something so you feel less powerless and despairing, and might develop the skills and contacts and interests to start lobbying for greater change" is infinitely more useful than "this is as good as it's gonna get, so just despair and buy aircon and get angry about how the government keeps selling our lives to tech companies for profit rather than stick to their net zero pledges" like
and if you're not able to offer actions to join in with because you are not yourself part of any and your entire thing is just making people feel bad and despairing... that's not activism actually btw
So the heatwave affecting India right now is insane. For my fellow fahrenheit folks out there, 60°C (the white areas) is 140°F.
The highest recorded temperature in Death Valley was 134°F.
"Right now"? This image is from March 2022, when India had an extreme heatwave. So for anyone asking "why are the news only talking about the European heatwave??" it's because Europe is the place that's currently experiencing record-breaking temperatures and all the disasters that come with that.
All of this info is available on the internet. You can check the current weather in India online just like in any other country. Idk why people always have to invent extra drama and spread fake "news" like this when there's already plenty of real disasters to talk about. It doesn't help anyone and it distracts from what's actually happening.
tfw your team is in a group with Curaçao so people say the name a lot and every time you hear "Curaçao" it plays in your head to the tune of "Bella Ciao"
my 15-year-old netbook started making a rattling sound when the fan came on, and the screen has been getting wonky, it gets those coloured lines unless you carefully tilt it at a certain angle because the cable goes through the hinge so wear and tear is kind of inevitable
so I went to ebay and bought a new fan (€14) and a new screen cable (€12), and found a guide on the internet to take the whole netbook apart and put it back together, and now it works like a charm
so for €26 I have a functioning laptop again instead of spending several hundred on a new one
and THIS is why it matters that things are repairable and come with covers and screws and bits that can be exchanged and fixed without scrapping the entire thing and buying a new one
earlier anon, no worries about the late reply! life happens indeed, hope you’re doing better now ^^ and im glad that anon made your day bc your love for this pairing seriously brings me inordinate amounts of joy 😭 GTC inspired one of my own aus (that has yet to exist) and i seriously consider most of your work to be canon/canon adjacent. have a good week!
It's a lot better, yes, thank you! And I'm delighted that GTC helped inspire an AU for you, that's seriously fantastic! <3 I hope you have fun with it, that's what it's all about! (I used to be such a canon purist but now I'm firmly on the side of, we can make our own canon and it's just as valid - I love AUs and canon divergence now!)
hope you’re doing well! just wanted to let you know i reread like. all of your CS fics and i stand by my opinion that you’re one of their best authors. i DREAMM to understand and write them as well as you do. thank you
Oh man, I'm SO sorry about the late reply - life happened, I thought I had replied, and just now realised I hadn't, I'm sorry! This message honestly made my day, actually it made my day twice because I just got to read it again, and it's so nice of you! I love CS so much still, they're both such interesting characters and their dynamic is so GOOD and... ah I just love them. So this means so much to me, thank you so much for the kind words!
