Genji wholeheartedly agrees, and though he had been dealing with his own demons, the allegations had been part of the reason why he left. He lets Reyes process what was said for a moment. The outburst, however, is not completely unexpected. He has not forgotten the bitterness between Reyes and Morrison. Perhaps it was deeper, festering into a hateful resentment. There was something pent-up inside, and he doesn’t believe they ever had a chance to try and work things out. No, they were both too prideful and opinionated about their own goals. After realizing Reyes had lost his memory—that’s the best way he can describe this, it is understandable why he would blame the one man he always struggled to have mutual agreements with.
“The pressure from the UN, the allegations, and flames of hate burnt everyone. In the end, there was not much anyone could do to douse them.”
As a changed man now, he wants to say it wasn’t all Morrison’s fault. The strike-commander shouldered a lot of issues on top of the UN’s discovery of Blackwatch and the allegations they faced, and probably tried to control the fire as best he could. But he was burnt by it in the process; both of them were. It leaves a melancholy feeling in his heart, to think Overwatch crumbled so quickly with the world throwing allegations at them as a whole, but perhaps that means it was never meant to be.
He cannot help but wonder if his memory loss has anything to do with the commander receiving head damage. He has regrets for being unable to be there while the meeting and inevitable explosion took place. At least he is here and seems to be fine, for the most part. The Uprising incident took place at least a few months before the meeting in Switzerland, so Reyes has missed out on quite a bit. When Genji thinks back on all of the events that had occurred over the past decade, he realizes it hasn’t been as long as he thought. At least not between the disbandment of Overwatch and present day.
Nodding in assent, he looks pensive for a moment. “It has been about five years by now. Once you and Morrison were presumed dead, the UN disbanded Overwatch. They had already launched several investigations on Overwatch and Blackwatch. The Petras Act was put into place to place and Overwatch activity has been deemed illegal ever since.”
Fingers pressed against his temple, still trying to put two and two together. The explanation was clean, and there was no reason for Genji to lie to him, but that did not change the fact that he had simply no idea what had occurred. After the Uprising conflict, it was all a blur to him. Or perhaps, it simply hadn’t happened yet. He didn’t understand the rules to this world. Maybe, it was a time travel deal. Subconsciously, his mind would laugh at the idea, but there was a line of nervous anxiety about the truth...
So he would elect to focus on smaller details.
“Five years, huh...” A raised hand to scratch at his beard almost absentmindedly, the most avid reminder of his age, considering the changes he underwent. Thanks to all the genetic changes his body had undergone to make him the soldier he now was, it was likely he would last a damn long time. Still, putting a number to the years he’s been around was still odd. “I’m getting old then. Not like these bones feel it though.”
“Alright, there’s not time to dwell on this crap now. I’ll figure it out when I’ve got the chance.” Dwelling on what happened in another world seemed idiotic. It was his past, yes, but now he had this new future to think about. A future that was just as imperiled as the one from back home “it seems we were enlisted for some new work. End of the day, we’re still saving the world. What’s your status, Shimada? You a master or a servant?”
