Castile Soap
One of the more difficult parts of this process for me has been finding certain self-care products or recipes that were both organic/natural and didn’t destroy my skin in some way. This has been such a life-saver for me in the past six months! I use it in several recipes, like the body wash I posted months ago, but more recently (as life gets busier and things come up that you wish wouldn’t), I’ve been using this as an all-in-one body wash and facial cleanser. It’s super mild, very easy on my EXTREMELY sensitive skin, and best of all - it doesn’t dry out my face like everything else I have ever used to wash my face!
I buy it on Amazon (I buy everything on Amazon) and you can get it here for $27 (2-32oz bottles - and this stuff goes a LONG way. I use it daily and have gone through a bottle and a half in six months).
If you use it, let me know how you like it and what you’re using it for!
Six Months!

Hey, it's Charity. Could I switch out the orange for lemon or grapefruit? Also, what is the castile soap? Never heard of it. Does it have a bunch of ingredients in it?
Hi Charity,
You can definitely substitute lemon or grapefruit essential oils for the orange - I use orange for the scent, so that is definitely a preference!
As for the castile soap - this stuff is amazing! Castile soap is an olive-oil based soap (it originated in Spain), is very mild, and usually has some mixture of coconut and jojoba oils along with other essential oils (just depends on the brand you buy). For recipes, I use Natural Way Organics - it's natural, chemical free and fragrance free.
You can shop around to find the best one for you - I like the Natural Way one for my recipes because it is one of the most basic ones I could find - it only has coconut, olive, jojoba, aloe vera, and rosemary oils.
To celebrate our new followers, we’re hosting a drawing for a free sample of either our deodorant or toothpaste! How do you enter? Glad you asked!
Just reblog this post and add which you’d like! Depending on the number of reblogs, we’ll choose one or two winners and your sample will be mailed to…

Natural, Non-Toxic Body Wash
Tired of dry, red, itchy skin? We were too! Maybe you don't actually have irritated skin. Maybe you have flawless skin! If so, take a moment to appreciate it, you lucky duck. Either way, this recipe for all-natural body wash is wonderful! One of the best parts of this process for me is actually knowing exactly what ingredients are in all of my toiletries. I know this one looks like a lot - but purchasing the oils needed for this one will help build your collection, and you won't be sorry, I promise!
What you'll need:
Liquid castille soap - 2 cups
Raw, unfiltered honey* - 1/2 cup
Jojoba oil (or extra virgin olive oil if you prefer) - 4 teaspoons
Vitamin E oil - 2 teaspoons
Tea tree oil - 15 drops
Peppermint oil - 15 drops
Chamomile oil - 30 drops
Orange oil - 10 drops
Eucalyptus oil - 10 drops
Bottle for dispensing
Eyedropper (small) to measure oils
Measuring cups/spoons
What to do:
Combine all ingredients, shake to mix. This will last until your honey expires! This recipe yields 16 oz.
*Raw, unfiltered honey crystallizes at room temperature. If yours is solid, just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds until it's syrupy and will pour into your bottle. Once in your mixture, the oils will keep it separated and it won't crystallize in your shower!

Ditch the Stick: Chemical Free, Natural Deodorant
There are so many reasons I wanted to dump the antiperspirant and switch to an all natural deodorant. First of all, I've been reading about why antiperspirant is not necessary and honestly not great for you. Essentially, the components (chemicals) get rubbed onto your skin and they block up the sweat glands so that you don't get sweat on your shirt. This isn't stopping you from sweating - it's blocking up glands so that the sweat has nowhere to go.
Also, even though no one really knows exactly why we get those yellow pit stains on our lighter colored shirts, the common belief among researchers is that it comes from the chemicals in antiperspirant mixing with our sweat. So you could be saving some shirts by switching!
Disclaimer: while many proponents of natural deodorant will cite "facts" about regular antiperspirants causing cancer/Alzheimers/kidney disease, these "facts" are unfounded and are in no way why I am switching to natural. If you're concerned, always ask your doctor.
What we have here is a modified version of several natural deodorant recipes around the web. It is important to note that this is NOT an antiperspirant. This is a deodorant only. You may notice your underarms feel a little more damp than usual but this will eliminate the odor and allow your body to sweat naturally, as it should.
So let's get started! This is a super easy and quick alternative to the sticks that cause everyone grief.
WHAT YOU NEED:
2 parts baking soda 2 parts cornstarch 3 parts coconut oil 5-7 drops of your choice essential oil for scent 8-oz seal-able container Something to stir with (I used a chopstick again; you'll find I love those!) Fork
WHAT TO DO:
It's super complicated, so pay attention here (not): 1. Mix the cornstarch and baking soda together. (I used the container I would be storing it in, put the two powders in there and tightened the lid, and shook it for like, 3 seconds.)
2. Next you're going to add your coconut oil. I used a 2tbsp/2tbsp/3tbsp ratio here.
3. Use a fork to mash the coconut oil into the powder. This part takes a couple of minutes, because you need to make sure it's all mixed well. Once all the coconut oil is blended pretty well, use your chopstick to stir.
4. Stir in 5-7 drops of your essential oil. Be careful here - too much oil will make this really slimy. If you feel like it's too runny, you can add a little cornstarch back to it and stir, adding until you have the consistency you want.
5. Stir, stir, stir! Just make sure everything is one nice creamy consistency.
For application, I honestly dip my finger in and apply a tiny bit to each underarm like I would apply a lotion. It smells great!
Yes - you're going to sweat. Not a lot - most people don't even sweat enough to warrant antiperspirant, and many people don't stink at all when they do sweat. Everyone is different. Your body sweats for a reason - let it happen! As long as you don't stink, no one cares, I promise.
I don't have a picture of this finished product for you because to be quite honest, all the ingredients are white, so it looks remarkably like the toothpaste. Definitely has a different consistency, but you can't see that in the photo. My best suggestion - use a sharpie or cute label to distinguish your products so you don't mix them up! The good thing about natural products is that you could technically brush your teeth with the deodorant recipe too, if you wanted...apparently some people use cornstarch mixed with baking soda for teeth whitening! (I have no idea if this works so do your research before trying this!)
Let me know if you try it out - I'd love to hear from you!
Be free,
Haley
All Natural, Chemical Free Toothpaste
Hello again!
Toothpaste is one of the first things I wanted to tackle as a part of my chemical-free process. The cost was a motivator for sure - my husband and I have always had brand preferences and unfortunately they were not the same - but the crazy amounts of unnecessary chemicals in toothpaste is what gets to me.
Have no fear! After some hefty research, I've got a great recipe for an all-natural, homemade toothpaste for you. I basically researched some things that could be used as a toothpaste substitute and kind of created a mixture that worked for me. My husband loves it, I love it, and it costs basically pennies to make.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Coconut Oil (6 tablespoons) Baking soda (6 tablespoons) Peppermint Oil (30-40 drops)* Liquid Stevia (start with 15 drops, taste, add more as needed) Storage container of your preference (something that can be sealed tightly) Something to stir with (I prefer something made of wood or plastic - I always use a chopstick. Non-metal utensils help avoid getting a slight but present metallic taste in the mix.)
*You can substitute any essential oil for the peppermint oil here, but I think peppermint does the job best because it gives you the minty fresh breath you want and makes the mixture actually taste like toothpaste.
WHAT TO DO
Okay - here's the best part. Mix your coconut oil and baking soda in your container until thoroughly blended into a paste. Add your peppermint oil and stevia. Taste the mixture - best way to test it is by brushing your teeth - if it's still way too salty for you, you can add a little more stevia until it's more manageable for your taste buds.
This should stay fresh until the expiration date on your coconut oil, and that stuff usually lasts for a year and a half to two years. So feel free to modify the recipe for as much as you think you'll need! These measurements yield roughly a cup - maybe a cup and a half. That doesn't seem like much, but it's a lot more than you think!
Store in a sealed container. I use a little stick to put it onto my toothbrush, but you could also just dip your toothbrush right in if that makes you happier.
Voila! Toothpaste! Easy, cheap, and so much better for you. As an added bonus, the baking soda will help whiten your teeth fairly quickly. I've only been using this recipe for a few days and I can already tell a difference in my pearly whites.
Comments? Questions? Let me know!
Be free!
Haley
Welcome!
Today is Tuesday, December 30th, 2014. I am on a journey to a chemical free life, and this is my way of inviting you to join me!
(If you know me, you can skip this paragraph unless you want to be reminded of how great I am - if that's the case, read on.) I'm Haley. I'm a happy wife of 6 months (newlyweds!) to the greatest man I know. I'm a pet mama to three spoiled cats, of whom you'll get to see the occasional photo if you're lucky. We just bought our first house right after we got married, and are still in the process of transforming it into our home - more on that later! Okay...now that you know a little about me, let's talk about why we're here!
Over the last year I've become painfully conscious of just how many chemicals I'm putting in, on, and near my body. My husband and I began discussing our big goals for the new year and the two that kept coming back to the forefront were saving money and living healthier. We talked about the things we spend money on and were shocked at how much money we blow on things like cosmetics, toiletries, and other body products. Seriously - stop reading right now, and go do some math. Add up how much you've spent in the last year (estimated if you're not a weirdo who keeps receipts that long) on things like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, makeup, etc. I'll wait.
Back with me? Insane, right? We estimated that we spend around $600 a year for these kinds of things. (This is a low estimate, because we also travel a lot and end up buying the little travel size bottles pretty often. Oh, and this estimate does not include makeup because I only recently started using it with any frequency.)
So - $600 a year. That's almost an extra mortgage payment. That's our yearly homeowner's insurance premium. With an extra $600 a year, we could each make an extra payment on our vehicles.
Okay, so money schmoney. Let's talk health. The chemicals that are in our products (facial cleansers, shampoos, toothpaste, etc) - the products we use on our bodies - are the reason that these products all come with warning labels that include the number for the poison control center, and many of them caution against children being exposed to said product. Wait til we get into the deadly chemicals in our household cleaners - it's terrifying stuff!
I have set a goal for my home. By the end of 2015, I want my home to be completely chemical-free. No toxic cleaners, no beauty products with a mile-long list of ingredients, and no using anything if I can't tell you exactly what's inside it (without cheating) in under 15 seconds.
Sound insane? Probably! It's not going to be easy. That's why I've divided the year into four parts to make transitioning a little less of a shock. For the first three months of the year, I'll be replacing all of the products in our home that we currently use on our skin (toiletries). That means soap, shampoo/conditioner, toothpaste, body wash, deodorant, lotions, makeup, etc. The second quarter will focus on replacing household cleaners - things like Clorox, Windex, and bathroom cleaners (among about a billion other things we haven't even considered - anyone else use those plug-in wallflower things for scents from Bath & Body Works? I'll miss those). Third quarter is where it gets trickier. We'll be diving into what we are putting into our bodies. This is the stage where the yummy delicious junky crap we eat all the time makes its dramatic exit to be replaced by natural, healthier options that don't contain a million preservatives and random ingredients we can't pronounce). Last but not least, in the fourth quarter we'll circle back around to sweep - looking for anything from the other stages we missed along the way, any lingering chemicals in the house/pantry. This will also include efforts to make our home more sustainable. We'll reflect on our progress and then continue the journey, one step at a time!
For most of these replacements, I'll be using homemade alternatives - and each time I find one that works, I'll post the recipe here so you can benefit from what we learn! Go on, give us a follow. I promise at least once a week updates, along with recipes, reviews, and other thoughts along the way.
Be free, my friends!
Haley
