I don't know why but I suddenly just remembered the time my dad got bitchy with me when I grabbed a cheese and sausage sample from a plate that was clearly labeled "Free Sample" at a new artisanal grocery. The sausage ended up being extremely spicy and the clerk was immediately apologetic for not warning me, but my dad told me it's what I deserve for just "grabbing things without asking". From the Free Sample platter. I was crying from the capsasin pain and the clerk even went so far as to say he could go get water from the break room so my dad didn't have to pay for a bottled drink, but my dear old dad adamantly refused and said I could wait until we got home. The clerk looked at me with so much pity as dad dragged me away. So then I had to spend fifteen minutes on the ride home with tears dripping down my face trying not to sob bc I didn't want to make things worse for me. And when I finally rushed inside the house to gulp down tap water, he just looked so smug.

I'm still not sure what the lesson was supposed to be, other than "parents suck"
