Happy birthday to Vera Rubin! Born on this day in 1928, Rubin is perhaps best known for establishing the presence of dark matter in galaxies. While working at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, she teamed up with Kent Ford, an astronomer who had developed an extremely sensitive spectrometer. Their observations allowed Rubin to calculate that galaxies must contain about 10 times as much “dark” mass as can be accounted for by visible stars. At least 90 percent of the mass in galaxies, and therefore in the observable universe, is invisible and unidentified—compelling evidence for dark matter. In recognition of her many achievements, Vera Rubin was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1993 was awarded the National Medal of Science.

i think too many people reach for the word unforgivable when what they actually mean is inexcusable
Ok now I’m curious… Which do you prefer:
I have lived in and out of the city, I prefer the city
I have only lived in the city, I prefer the city
I have only lived out of the city, I prefer the city
I have lived in and out of the city, I prefer out of the city

i made a post like this before but I can't find it now. so. I'll just redo it.
What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
