We have a saying that goes "God will make the floor as you take the step" to mean that the work of God will work itself out as it goes, and not before. You start doing and God makes the means. I like the image of trusting enough to step into nothingness and God making the floor as your foot is about to hit it.

Yesterday, a 7.8 earthquake hit the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. Its epicenter was in Maasim, Sarangani Province. This affected many of the nearby areas, reaching north to the Visayas. Even Cebu City, which is 733 kilometers away, felt the effects of the earthquake. Eighteen people lost their lives.
And though eighteen people dead is eighteen people too many, it is still a blessing that the earthquake happened when it did, striking at 7:37 in the morning. All children in the affected areas were still participating in the flag ceremonies, which are usually held in an open field; coincidentally, these open fields are oftentimes the assigned evacuation place whenever disaster strikes.
If the earthquake struck any later in the day, then the death toll would undoubtedly be higher. Pictures have already surfaced online, showing collapsed walls and staircases in these schools. Many other buildings, both private and public, were also severely affected.
The effects of the earthquake don't reveal anything that we don't already know: the corruption that is rampant in our country has led to the underfunding of public schools. As a country, we already know that we are susceptible to earthquakes and typhoons. Despite this, buildings are not up to code and money is passed around under the table. It is a bitter reality, and one that we are always reminded of in the aftermath of disasters.
But God is good all the time. Even with the incompetence and corruption of public officials, even with the geographic predisposition of our country... there could not have been a better time to have an earthquake. What if those children had to evacuate and climb down those stairs? What if those very stairs collapsed under them? The reality may be harsh, yes-- but the 'what-if' that didn't come to pass is harsher.
Please join me in praying for the eighteen that are born now to Heaven, and the many more that were saved by His perfect timing.
