the speed with which the victims of state violence are labeled "unstable" by the state should make absolutely clear the necessary connection between police/prison abolition and mad rights/antipsychiatry.

there has never been a time in the history of psychiatry where "strenuously objecting to one's own mistreatment at the hands of authority figures" was not a diagnostic criteria for at least one disorder. read that again.

in a system where the "mental healthcare" frameworks are built on a preservation of the cultural status quo, advocating for oneself in the face of mistreatment becomes a symptom of illness.

#this is why the rising sentiment of forcible treatment i see on both sides of american politics is so fucking scary #like those institutions are carceral. they are deeply abusive. you cannot possibly advocate for forced treatment when treatment is prison #the dehumanization and trauma in even the nicest of psychiatric facilities let alone the worst are not something we can EVER #inflict on people forcibly #and in so many cases will only compound the illness through acute trauma for the rest of the sufferer's life.#like. if the STATE gets to decide who is so mentally ill to get locked up then that is a serious threat!#just evil evil evil #and does NOT improve people's outcomes #the state CANNOT be the arbiter of forced traumatization in another way to some of the most vulnerable people in its communities #it's just state violence. all the way down. the rounding up and harming of those deemed unacceptable.#guess what! the only thing this cures is the middle and upper class having to observe the mentally ill!
