Dance does matter... ...get creative UK!
www.barelymethodical.com are in the area on the 5th May They are planning some filming of themselves dynamically running through the Warwick University campus for media purposes. As a finale to the short film they would like more flying male bodies...I know everyone is very busy now a days with their own work etc but I thought if any of you were free then it would be a nice networking opportunity and a nice little exciting additive to your show reels if of course any of you make the cut? Let me know if your interested or know anybody who might be!
Wish we could have this lovely man working with us more often!
Touring now…..
Our Brave Boys FOREVER
Through my company @BeingFrankPT and @BoysDancing I have been running specialised dance projects for young men for over 10 years and the work never fails to amaze me. The reasons being we are always taking risks and plan really ambitious projects. Whether the aim is to get as many boys to perform all together in one huge hour long live show (160+ in Solihul, Coventry and Warwickshire's performance of Artful Dodgers) or creating a suite of six dance films created in six areas across the West Midlands, we try to learn and improve on them year by year. By doing this we challenge both the artists running the projects and the young men involved and it is the boys that I am always really impressed by. Most of them have had very little previous dance experience before they encounter Boys Dancing and the way the boys meet the challenges presented to them, their honest responses in the creative process, their loyalty to each other, the respect they give to the artistic themes explored and their commitment to the project overall is always a pleasure to behold.
When I took over as artistic lead for Worcestershire working in collaboration with @DanceFest I thought that I was ready for anything and everything that the participants from Worcester University, Nunnery Wood, Hagley High, Regency High and W'ireboyz would throw at me...how wrong I was...
Every project in every area is UNIQUE, that is what I really love about Boys Dancing and with it being 100 years since the start of World War 1 it was decided that Worcestershire would present a memorial piece remembering the soldiers that went away to war but specifically the dance would highlight the plight of the 250,000 young men who applied to go to war even though they were under the legal age of consent. Through researching the theme I found myself shocked by the personal accounts, I felt guilt that my life is so easy in comparison and I felt anger, I could not believe that young men one as young as 12 were sent away to fight. It was as if I had in someway started grieving for them.
That posed a question to me....if I was effected so strongly by the theme how were the young men going to take it and if we were going to do justice to the memory of the soldiers could the boys actually be mature enough to empathise and give a respectful performance? Well they answered me on Saturday night on the 5th April and the show that they presented will stay with me for as long as I live.
Performed at College Hall, part of Worcester Cathedral and accompanied by a live pianist it was the most emotional piece I have seen presented by a young cast and I was very proud of each and every one of the boys. They created really fantastic intense physical dance vocabulary that looked amazing in the space but it was the way they raised to the challenge of performing the more focused, intimate, emotive dance material that I was impressed with the most and to be frank it did not come as a surprise because all the way through the rehearsal process they had shown levels of maturity that was way beyond their years. They tackled the difficult subject matter with truth and honesty and the way they empathised with the soldiers and their families by sharing intimate experiences they have had quite literally at times in rehearsal took my breath away.
I would like to say thank you to Rose Beason and the team at DanceFest for building such a memorable project, I would also like to thank all the teachers and support staff from all the schools that made the project run so smoothly and also congratulate all of the young men involved on an incredible, powerful, emotional performance that was one of a kind! I cannot wait for the film to be edited so I can relive the experience again!
Thank you, thank you, thank you one and all!!!
Pickup the pace At Trinity Laban
Written by @boysdancing apprentice @thisisthato An experience that will stick with me. Around 9:00am I hear music from Dave McKenna's car as he parks outside my house to pick me up. I think to myself he's early or maybe I'm running late, but either way I'm not quite ready. So once again I'm off to my usual rushed start to the day, frantically trying to make sure I have everything. I finally get myself together and we get on the way. Weather is nice and Dave and Myself always find plenty to talk about so the 3 hour long journey flies by. Just gone 12:00pm when we arrive at Trinity Laban. As soon as we enter the building we can feel the vibrance in the atmosphere. The sounds of mumbling voices fills the background. Theres boys and young men heading to the cafe for lunch after the morning dance workshops with smiles on their faces. Various all male dance pieces are being projected on screens in the foyer. We get ourselves signed in, get our maps of the building and schedule for the day then we are let loose to explore. Our first stop was the cafe for some lunch. We'd barely sat down to eat before somebody recognises Dave and just like that, we switch to work mode; discussing projects, funding and various other things relating to boys dancing. Then it's off the feedback room where I'm instantly asked to be on camera discussing the obstactle that impead boys from dancing aswell as the benifits of having days like these, which cater dance specifically to boys. I must say I felt like I rocked that interview lol then it was of to the studio theatre to watch a few performances. John Ross Company took to the stage and blew us away. The piece was about a boys night out! It was very cleverly choreographed as a retrospective look at the events that lead up to the groups opening pose. The seamless and creative use of humour while staying very true to the antics that can be observed during some boys' real life nights out was incredible. As so as the piece finish it was time for my first class; Contemporary with Will. This was my first ever purely contemporary class although nothing we did was completely new to me I really enjoyed myself. The atmosphere in the room was very laid back yet challenging. It felt like we had all known each other for sometime. 15minute break the a workshop with members of Frantic Assembly. Really fun and simple cardio vascular warmup followed by an exercise that challenged the mind and body which gave me ideas for the work i do for boys dancing. We worked on some lifts then did some creative exercises focusing on a pedestrian approach to movement, which I really enjoyed. Then it was time for the Q&A discuss with our panel of professional male artists, to which Dave and myself were late due to some reason I can't quite remember. The discussion included topics such as: going into the profession world, best single advice to give to a young dancer, whether geographical learning environment affects future prospects and many more. We had some drinks and snacks at the pre-show drinks reception then made our way to the theatre. The even was brought to a close by performances from various all male groups from different style and ages. My favourite of which was Edgefwd university. The piece was dynamic, creative, humorous very well thought out and put together. Great choreography and a well executed performance. Before I knew it, it was time to go home. Pickup the pace was a great event. One I am very glad I went to, and an experience that will stay with me for some time. I really would encourage other young dancers to go to the event in years to come.
This is our venue for the Worcester @BoysDancing performance on the 5th April at 7.30pm It is part of Worcester Cathedral and is a school hall used by Kings. It's going to be very relevant to the theme of #Avoidance in relation to #WW1 but be warned...you might need to bring your handkerchiefs with you dads! Stay tuned for the title....
A clip from our rehearsals for Artful Dodgers at Warwick Arts centre. Well done all 160 lads on the day you were all awesome!!!
Worcester Boys Dancing Meeting/ ideas
We have had a very productive meeting at Dance Fest on Monday evening about the Boys Dancing project for this year in Worcester. We managed to iron out all the logistics like dates for sessions, technical rehearsals and performance so we are good to start the project now, our first session will be on the 3rd February. I can proudly announce that we have a performance date of the 5th April in the evening, we do not have a confirmed venue as yet but we are very close to it!!! The teachers, Rose and I all decided that the show that we would like to present in Worcestershire will be an event that links to the nations First World War Centenary commemorations. At present we are looking into the possibility of using College Hall as our venue which is part of King's College and one of Worcester Cathedral's buildings. It has lots of really interesting historical links to battles through the years and also has on its walls memorials to students from King's College who died in the war. We would like the piece to bring to life these elements of the site that relate to the war and also explore the buildings breathtaking architecture. I have a couple of really nice pictures of the venue taken by Rose and it looks lovely. We are arranging a visit for me to take a walk around the site next week.
After a brilliant meeting @dancefest about their #SiteSpecific WW1 @boysdancing project I came out of the office and was greeted by The Worcestershire All Male Choir with over 60 singers! It sounded amazing!!! #IWantOne just the perfect cast, soundtrack and at the site we are hoping for it would be priceless!!!
Do you want to meet the composer for the Coventry, Solihull, Warwickshire Boys Dancing project? Here is a piece Ash Brown recently composed for the Shropshire Boys Dancing performance Manitou, this was written for a site specific piece in a farm area surrounded by Logs and really long Fence. Enjoy!
