when the Project Hail Mary movie has Grace having the emotional crashout of the century passed out on the floor with a vodka IV when he realizes he’s completely alone in space and when it has Grace proudly announce that he and Carl are fathers when they figure out how the astrophage reproduce and when it has no greenscreens and real actual sets and an animation-augmented puppet rather than CGI and when it has an absolutely heart wrenching and touching funeral scene for Yao and Ilyukhina with greatly expanded eulogies and when it has Eva sing karaoke and when it shows how physically demanding the forces both inside and outside the ship are on the human body in space and when it has the touchdown pass of the galaxy and when it truly conveys the absolute fear and stress of making first contact particularly when you are just one human stranded so far from home and when it has Grace be able to really show Rocky what Earth is like inside the little environmental simulation orb room and when when it has multiple Rocky POV scenes so the audience can see how Eridians “see” with sound and when it has a gorgeous choral soundtrack and when it has Rocky wear BOTH outfits from the book and when it showed the absolute desperation and despair in Grace’s voice when he tries to run at the end and then gets sedated and put on the Hail Mary against his will and when it has Grace helping Rocky to heal after Rocky gets burned by the oxygenated atmosphere by building him a little heat lamp and when it has Eva see Rocky on the video they sent back to Earth on the beetles and she got Rocky’s little xenonite human sculpture gift and when it has Grace affectionately call the ship “Mary” and the nannybot “Armando” and when it has Grace get to actually visit Rocky’s ship by wearing a xenonite EVA suit and when it has not one but TWO hugs between Grace and Rocky and when it has Eridian voices singing in the outro/credits song and when it has all the emotional range of the book by being so funny and devastating and thrilling and hopeful

List of Dr.Grace's rejected ideas for first contact with Rocky's government:

1) Show up in the Hail Mary, float in orbit over the ocean, pretend to talk to something very deep underwater and then pretend to fly away with zero communication the Eridian populace.

2) ask "are you crabs yet" and when the Eridians ask "what are crabs, question?" say "oh, sorry to bother you" and nothing else.

3) Send a sound based message of Grace talking in English but intersperse one word in Eridian to sew mass confusion and make every linguist on the planet argue about whether or not it was a coincidence.

4) Track down Eridian equivalent of humanities golden record, deliver it via unmanned probe to the planet. Say in perfect Eridian "you dropped this"

Grace thought that in choosing to save Rocky he was giving up on the chance to return to Earth and get vengeance on Stratt by saying strongly worded insults to her.

But in reality, Grace got the ultimate revenge on Stratt when she, pragmatic, paranoid, competent Stratt, leader of the word in all but public name opens the beetle and gets a message from Grace that goes "Yeah so because you sent me up here, I, junior science school teacher with horrible social skills, became the soul representative of humanity to a super intelligent technologically advanced alien race. Also I gave them a laptop depicting all known human knowlage, our technologies, major population centers, weaponry, psychology, ect. because the first one I met seemed friendly :) It worked out afterall!"

Crack concept where, for some ungodly reason, the minds of the Project Hail Mary team (scientists, astronauts, and Carl) get sent back in time. The sending happens after the beetles have been launched but before they have been received by earth. The waking-up-into-their-past-selves happens the day before Dr. Stratt first approaches Dr. Grace.

None of them know the others have been sent back.

Dr. Stratt, who has been in emotional hell for over a decade due to being forced to betray the closest thing she has to a friend, decides to never shadow Dr. Grace's doorstep. He doesn't need to be involved this time. She has the knowledge and ability to save the world and keep him safe, now.

She gets the original team minus Grace back together. No one figures out anyone else is a time traveler because they are all hard believers in the butterfly effect and believe themselves to be causing all changes. (Sometimes being very smart circles right back around to being very stupid.)

No one else mentions bringing Dr. Grace on, because they all low-key suspect what happened last time and want to keep their friend (...he makes friends SO easily) safe.

This silence lasts until Grace breaks down their super classified front door being like "SEND ME TO SPACE NOW I SWEAR TO GOD" and everyone is like "I CAN VOUCH FOR HIM NO ONE KILL HIM" and "DO NOT SEND HIM TO SPACE" and "WAIT HOW DO YOU KNOW HIM."

And Dr. Stratt is like "I am so, deeply sorry for-"

And Dr. Grace is like "Put me back up there right the fudge now!"

And then a day later they get a scary transmission from space saying "Give us Ryland Grace and we'll return your sun to full luminescence."

And Grace's response is. :D

They’re somewhere in Russia when Grace bursts into the meeting room and is promptly tackled. Grace is dirty from trekking across the wilderness and his clothes are torn from where he climbed over the barbed wire.

Of course there are questions, so Grace sets up his PowerPoint presentation but he’s weird, making strange gestures and counting in base six and when he writes out math equations he uses a different alphabet. They ask what’s up with him and he says “I’m Getting there! So anyways then Stratt nuked Antarctica-” and hasn’t even reached the part about intelligent alien life when a transmission from Erid is picked up, they sent it in human English Morse code “Give us back Ryland grace or we’ll blow you up with our death star lassjebfjkwbdjskbdjs ignore that ha ha hello humans we are friendly aliens politely asking for our friend back please :)”
