Easthies Backstory Theory

WHAT MADE YOU SO AFRAID?

Magic is terrifying. Most of witch hat atelier is seeing our colorful cast of characters trying to reconcile their wonder of magic with the terror it begets. In pointy hat society, the fear of magic is ingrained into their very culture. However, Easthies’s fear seems to run deeper than that.

Why did he join the Knights Moralis? What informed his black and white morality? His unwavering devotion to the Pact?

My theory is that he had once drawn or been tempted to draw forbidden magic in the past.

Hear me out, the Knights Moralis do not need to draw their own spells. It’s the reason why they keep preloaded palm quires, pennants with medallions, and why their cloaks are so short. They don’t have to conceal their hands if they’re not drawing with them.

In a twitter illustration, Shirahama stated that Easthies stopped drawing magic altogether after joining the Knights.

Easthies is almost the perfect witch pointy hat society demands. He keeps the secret of magic, and his own secrets close to his chest. The fear of magic deeply ingrained in his mind.

But he does not create. He wipes the slate clean. He doesn’t experience the joy of creating art the way that this story hammers in as important to the human condition. He’s fond of magic but his fears of it won out unlike Coco.

Magic exists to make the world vibrant. Speaking of Coco, Easthies has a habit of targeting her. I don’t think this is wholly because of her being an Outsider, after all Easthies is able to set his rivalry with Qifrey aside with the lockscroll saga. So why the fixation on Coco?

With this theory in mind, Coco is a projection of his past self. Easthies is punishing her for his past mistakes, or for giving into temptation.

Throughout Silver Eve, Coco has been convincing the Three Wise to slowly break the Pact, and Easthies is worried that she’s doomed them all. For Easthies, Coco reveals the hypocrisy of witches, espousing the importance of keeping the Pact while seeking excuses to bend it to their will.

Coco may be the seed of discord implanted into Easthies’s society to wear it down, but he, too, is a hypocrite. Why doesn't someone who’s so self-assured in his own beliefs not trust himself to create? Mankind is terrifying, and maybe Easthies is scared of himself.

Im very invested in this theory! I'm also curious to how Utowin plays a role in Easthies' teen days. Easthies gives up magic, which is a source of comfort for many witches to rely on. Because of that, he relies on Utowin instead; a person who was specifically looking for someone that would "need" him despite the fact he doesn't have the comforting magic of Olruggio.

If we follow the theory, Easthies found his place in society after his forbidden magic mishap by finding a job and people around him that kept him away from magic. Thus, it gets him riled up when he sees Coco, a rule breaker that simply continued to embrace magic and even receive encouragement by peers and mentors.

the day that qifrey ended up being super evil is the day that i could die peacefully

we already got some scenes that showed how selfish qifrey is (to be fair he’s not THAT selfish and his motives are kinda understandable to me) but i want to see him in peak evilness, like imagine if they managed to find a spell or something to unpetrify coco’s mom but qifrey haven’t reached his goal, which i assume is hunting the brimhats, then he erased coco’s memory. also what if qifrey knew how to save coco’s mom all this time but chose not to because he wanted to catch the brimhats first, considering that he himself said that with coco he could find the brimhat (coco’s connection to the book that iguin sold), it would make sense if he prolongs this whole thing, making coco stay by his side until he found the brimhats, bonus point if coco emded up realizing ehat qifrey is doing and went like “this mf is no better than the brimhats!!” and then joined the brimhats lol.

i know that this is definitely unlikely and tbh i also don’t want coco being a brimhat as endgame but just think about it

i would LOVE to see witch hat characters using magic in combat which i know would definitely be unlikely since WHA never really focuses on combat or such and it would be kinda hard to do combat since they draw their mahic not cast it, the closest thing we got to a combat is the dragon arc thing in volume one, but just imagine wouldn’t that be really cool?!($?!,!

News today from NYCC - further announcements about the Witch Hat Atelier Anime! The poster above was posted to the official twitter with the caption that the anime is aiming for a 2026 release.

I believe this is our first look at Qifrey's atelier, and the backgrounds of the first and second test as well as Kahln are present too! Not to mention those tricky silverwood trees. Very exciting stuff! I'll be looking for a higher quality image but wanted to share this immediately. Of course there was one on the website!!

I really hope that we could get a deep dive into the knight of moralis, we only know so little about them— all we know is that they’re extremely strict and stuff, in the chapter where Galga got exposed to the forbidden magic, the knights erased his memory with no hesitations ; just like any others, this showed that they’re really compliant to the said rules and the rules apply to everyone, even children (yes when they tried to erase coco’s memory).

I like to think that the birds, the one in the 80 something chapter (i forgot the name ok) symbolizes the reality of being a knight of moralis, the birds itself is black and white, showing how monotone and rigid the knights are, to be honest it’s more like how they’re forced to obey the rules that are made, the birds also has like a circle like stripes, i take this as a symbol of how they’re trapped in a circle of rules that have been made, a barrier around them and the world, a bird can fly but that doesn’t mean that the bird is “free” in this case a knight can do whatever they like but is still trapped inside the established rules (subconsciously), i like to think that this gave them the illusion of having control but in reality they’re the one bing controled by the rules, this blurred the concept of moral to them, thinking what they did is right because it follows the rules when actually it isn’t, one more thing about the bird is that they are all the same— same colors, same patterns, and when it applies to the knights, same mindset. I like to think that the rules are drilled into those knights minds and with the people around them also being drilled the same rules, they will all accept and thinks that those rules as the norms, as the truth, even though it may be not.

Not saying that the knight of moralis is bad or anything, it just amazed me how they all seems like to think and act alike, even though yes, they all have different personalities, their view on the magic system is almost the same, that’s why luluci’s doubt in the (not so) latest chapter could be a good opening to the knight of moralis’ backstory. So yeah the knight of moralis is just some brainwashed and strict dudes and it’s super cool.

Ok I have to rant about Easthies because he gets so much hate but I love the character so much! I posted about this a minute ago on Reddit but he's such a fascinating character to me, from the start. I just have a thing about dark haired men with an inflexible moral code, ok? And after the last chapter, I FEEL AN EASTHIES BACKSTORY and like,

I am DYING for it. I feel like I'm the only Easthies lover in the world -- not because I agree with him or his actions, or because I find him likable. But he's obviously has strong convictions, strong enough to make him scary and unshakeable in his stances and I find that intriguing in a character.

He's a true lawful neutral in my view. Some people clearly see him as just a power hungry jackass who likes to bully people, but I think the author has clearly set up some kind of backstory explanation and I'm SO HERE FOR IT. I'm hoping for major trauma, angst etc regarding forbidden magic and/or memory erasure. Maybe somebody close to him used forbidden magic and had their memory erased? Maybe he lost a loved one who had their memory erased as a result of forbidden magic? Ugh I'm dying!! I can't wait!

Also- It's really interesting to examine the difference in the fan culture between how fans talk about Easthies vs Qifrey. Yes, Easthies is often too quick to erase memories, but it IS his job and is done in service to what he considers the greater good of the world and society as a whole, often without consideration of his personal goals. Our king Qifrey on the other hand, has been shown to erase memories of those he LOVES in order to pursue his individual desires unhindered, and yet has not received even a fraction of the backlash Easthies has. For me personally, I had a much stronger reaction to Qifrey's action in ch. 40 vs anything Easthies has done, because even though Easthies is an overreactive zealot, he at least seems to truly believe he's acting for the greater good. Qifrey knew he was being selfish and manipulative -- and did it anyways. Maybe has done it multiple times.

TLDR; it just fascinates me to think about how different people interact with these characters and their actions and also I love Easthies

i love how easthies (and witches in general) are so blinded by the magic law, like something that is morally right is wrong it’s really cool.

like in this scene when the perv guy said “if you’re really a man you’ll understand” and easthies just straight up punish him, though i’m sure the reason why easthies punish him is because of the law and not purely from his heart/moral, like when luluci and his teacher went to the order and easthies erase the teacher’s memory (instead of lulu’s like her teacher asked for). while yes what the teacher did is morally wrong, easthies erased his memory because the teacher (and the other guy i forgot) used forbidden magic, not because of what they did to luluci.

like in the early chapter when he threatened to erase coco’s memory without any proof is just so messed up, coco is just a child and she didn’t even use any forbidden magic. what is more messed up is that he held a grudge against coco like we’ve seen in chapter 80 when he tried to attack her and the others for using forbidden magic to reverse the time. while yes, using forbidden magic is wrong, they did that to save the people not to cause any harm, so it’s morally correct but wrong based on the law. while what easthies did is morally wrong i believe because he’s hindering them from saving the people, what he did is right based on the law, also he’s vinanna’s apprentice i think he’s used to this law since he was a child.

well yeah in conclusion easthies is blinded by the law and he’ll do anything to put up with the law even though it’s morally wrong. this is actually something not-so important and i’m pretty sure everyone realizes this but i just wanna point it out.

i’m not hating him though, i love him so much and i hope could learn more of his story. i think he’s just some lowkey crazy guy that uis so brainwashed by the order, but i’m also not defending of what he did to coco, there is no pure villain in this series, even iguin and sasaran i think they will have a crazy backstory.

i actually want easrhies to have a really sad, gut wrenching backstory like that guy cannot be this bitter without something real bad happened to him.

well wouldn’t you think it will be interesting if easthies lost his loved one because of the forbidden magic, either someone else does it or it will be more cool if he done it himself. like imagine his loved one is in danger like almost dying scenario and the only thing that could save them is by casting a forbidden magic, but at the end the magic ended up killing his loved one. but because he’s the apprentice of vinanna he won’t get his memory erased but he lives with this haunting regret in his heart, i think it will be pretty cool since he’s so uptight about the rule, he wanted to protect the other people from the forbidden magic, which what he had done in chapter 79-80 i think, or generally all chapter.
