Perhaps it was because of exams but this totally flew under my radar. 

Björk always seems to be pushing the creative bounds of her art, just look at her Biophilia album and accompanying app. These interactive features remove the passiveness from the audience creating a deeper engagement with her work. 

I hope Björk continues to be as innovative with her music’s presentation in the future.

#hotdubtimemachine on Friday night at Thebarton Theatre was absolutely mental. From 9 until midnight, the best people in Adelaide punched balloons, screamed out lyrics and danced until shirts were taken off and sweat was dripping. ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ - Album Review

It’s been an anxious four years waiting for British rock band Florence and the Machine’s third studio album. Their cinematic 2011 LP ‘Ceremonials’ left me hungry for more, but was the painfully long interval between releases worth it?

In ‘How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful’ lead vocalist Florence Welch’s eloquent yet bold voice seduces the listener through a gallery of intimate pain and monastic allusions as she undresses the emotional layers surrounding heartbreak - not unlike the previous releases’ main themes (I’ll concede that). However, the emotions Welch experiences are presented differently than before. While the slow-building soulful rock ballads are there in the form of ‘What Kind of Man’ and ‘Delilah’, as well as the slower reprieves like ‘St. Jude’, there is a notably folksy twang mixed in there too.

The opening track ‘Ship to Wreck’ commences with a guitar strum and a smattering of percussive instruments lighter than those used on their previous work. Gone are the deep dramatic beats of ‘If Only for a Night’ and ‘Cosmic Love’, creating a more personal sound that retains its confidence and power. I feel like this change from almost orchestral gospel-like rock to a more band-led folksy blues feel is definitely a positive one. 

Too many artists stagnate. They continually produce songs that fit within a boring money-making mould that doesn’t bare any development for their sound, so I am glad to see bands with a large following like Florence and the Machine switch up their music - this album definitely did not bore me. 

Coming in at around 50 minutes this LP is certainly the hearty addition to their discography I’ve been waiting years for. If you enjoyed their previous work, there is definitely something still here you’ll enjoy and if you’re new to them this album is a perfect jumping-on point with its incredibly well produced and layered tracks.
