The Substance (2024) [Rewatch]: A surreal full body nightmare trip! Abstract, Aggressive and Loud in a full audiovisual sense. Definitely takes inspiration from Tsukamoto and Fukui. Qualley and Moore shine bright. Transformation/Mirror is still the best scene of the year hands down!

The Best Films of 2024 (according to me)
The Favourite (2018) [Rewatch]: Yorgos Lanthimos’ Barry Lyndon! This was my first Yorgos which I saw back when it was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars and it still has a place in my heart. An off kilter surreal lesbian victorian dramedy that works wonders. Fantastic trio of performances going on in this one. Poor Things has officially taken the spot as my favourite Lanthimos, but this is a very close second! [5/5]
Kinds Of Kindness (2024) [Rewatch]: I love how Yorgos showcases such human concepts as sex and violence with a level of raw honesty that should be seen more in films. This film fits into the surreal style of cinema that Lanthimos plays around in and is heavily inspired by. He’s definitely the Kubrick of our generation in terms of genre experimentation. The cast is all top notch once again. Segment 3 is still the best one. I’m a Yorgos Lanthimos Girlie it seems. [5/5]
My Letterboxd Top 4. Will probably keep this as my locked lineup for a while.
Poor Things (2023) [Rewatch]: Heard someone describe this as Barbie for people who do mushrooms and yeah, pretty much. Every frame a painting for real. I apologize for my incompetence, this one is a banger! Emma Stone’s best role is somehow in a Kubrick/Gilliam surrealist steampunk sci fi romantic comedy. Should’ve won Best Picture last year. [5/5]

The Brutalist (2024): Not perfect but definitely deserves the title of “American Epic”. A better example of 3.5+ hour films than we’ve seen recently. Great performances and it’s a beautiful looking film as well. Definitely worthy of a Best Picture nomination or win. [4.5/5]

Sing Sing (2023): Real good. Completely understand all the reactions I heard from friends and colleagues coming out of the TIFF screenings. Profound and Heartwarming! [4.5/5]

Your Monster (2024): Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey rock in this! One of the better films i’ve seen from this year’s Sundance lineup. Smaller Dark Comedies continue to find their groove. Feels like and plays out how you would expect, but it’s still a great time! [4/5]
