Watched The Substance last night and this is a pretty small nitpick but it matters to me so here goes.
I think Sue should’ve been born either completely smooth or completely hairy (and then been shown shaving herself smooth). She is a result of Elisabeth’s self-hatred and desire to fit modern feminine beauty standards.
I was admittedly really excited to see she was born with bush but then like. I was sat there going “hang on, why are her legs smooth?! Where’s her armpit hair?!” It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me to sit in the middle of that imagery instead of either leaning fully into the idea that she’s what society says a woman should be—dolphin smooth, hairless—or that she is a newborn attempting to navigate all those pressures.
Yes I get that she’s Elisabeth, too, and to some degree it then makes sense she’d follow Elisabeth’s literal, physical shaving habits. I just think there was some lost potential for stronger imagery.
